Here is an 1849 half dime that has weird color. It was dipped white and then changed color from the stuff that was left on it. This is one of pieces with a "muddled date."

Wow, one of the boldest underdates for the V-2 (9 / Far 6) that I've ever seen!

This is the DeLorey / Crain V-2 that is also pretty bold.

The V-2 reverse should have a crack at the right ribbon like this.

Beautiful coins on here, as usual. Just picked up my first half dime for my type set, 20 full years into collecting. This example is AU58 PCGS & CAC, and the beautiful toning caught my eye while the non-MS grade kept the price within my budget.

It should also have an obverse rim cud / chip at K5, although I can't see that in this photo.

Crain #1014

Here's one of Stephen Crain's many unpublished or partly published varieties, the 1852-O V-2.
It is barely published - briefly mentioned in an E-Gobrecht Journal article 2013-1 by Lynn Ourso,
regarding an example found in a desk in Germany in WW II.
His Notes:

V-2 Die state: LDS. New variety, not in Valentine. First seen in John J. Pittman sale (MS-66 specimen) with diagnostic DC @*1. Kevin Zeitler called this to my attention, calling it LDS V1. This is a NEW obverse, not just a later die state of V1. Same reverse as V1. Large DC [from star 1 to wrist].

Discovered in 1999.

The finest known V-2 is the ex-Gardner MS-66, which is likely the ex-Pittman coin that Stephen Crain mentioned above.

Since you bought it for a type set, I figured the die variety info was not something you had researched yet or paid extra for.
But it can be fun to see cool features on coins we already have!

How were you able to figure out the former owner?

I have been working on an LS half dime attribution guide for a couple of years now.
So I have been saving good photos from every available source - PCGS CoinFacts, Heritage Auctions, Stacks Bowers, etc.
And also this forum, which I have been reading for several years.
There's a thread here:

and he may have posted it there. Or maybe to a different thread.
Actually, for fun just now, I looked for it and found it on this June, 2017 thread:

And after saving many photos, they form something of a "photo collection",
which I use to look for combinations of features that define the different die pairs.
It is an alternative to the classic method of building a reference collection of actual coins over many decades to do this.
