Retiring "The Type Set"

Retiring "The Type Set"

As of today, Lish my wife and I are retiring "The Type Set", recognized as the finest complete type set of U.S. circulating coins ever assembled.

We will be keeping our favourites - generally early gold and silver coins, and some of the early copper. The rest of the set will be sold privately by Joe O'Connor. If you want you can write to Joe at joe @ ocnumis.com for a list of which coins are currently available, or see him at his ANA table #928.

While Lish and I are taking some time to focus on our family and our business interests, we will always be collectors.

So dont be surprised if we show up in future at one of the coin auctions !

Taking time to focus on family is a wonderful goal.
Your set is amazing, even though I've only seen a scarce few of them, every coin I saw pics of made me absoultely shake my head.
    Take care and enjoy life.

Wishing you and Lish the best. I have always enjoyed your work especially when you made the collection public. Nice job and you should be proud. I hate to see HOF sets broken up. I know some of the top sets that take many years to assemble have been sold in tack recently. I am sure your collection is worthy. Again, best wishing.

Collective Coin shows a 1933 Saint and an 1804 Dollar under the username: "rarecoincollector."
It does NOT say "private" rare coin collector."
Any connection? Those are some power coins.

"The Type Set" is an incredible accomplishment. Actually before you retire it, I suggest you rename it "THE Type Set," as it is doubtful that anyone would ever exceed it. For YEARS, the High Desert set was deemed to be the best and never to be surpassed. You did was NO ONE else has done! Congratulations on your achievement, and best wishes for you and you family!

Thanks Cardinal, I appreciate it !

    Impressive set, good job!

Now maybe someone will buy your 1808 quarter eagle to upgrade their set, then that person will sell their old 1808.

Then another person will buy that cast off to upgrades their 1808, and sell their old one.

Now if this happens a dozen times, perhaps their will be one available in my price range!

A guy guy can dream right?

its probably one of the coins I will keep.

It does pose an interesting philosophical point: are you going to keep the top 20 or 30 or so "best" coins? The top tier of your set will generally be the most expensive but also the least possible to replace/replicate.

Perhaps this will be the seed of a new "best of the best" collection: with the funds of the other ~100 coins, you could consolidate into a dozen or so other incredible pieces and wouldn't necessarily need to still hold on to the full typeset.

Would you be satisfied with, say, 40 amazing coins in a "choose your own" style collection vs the more tangibly specific goal of one of each type?

That is what I was afraid of! I guess I will have to come up with a new strategy for an 1808. I set a lifetime goal of a quarter eagle type set, I am making slow progress but am hoping I have a long time to complete it.

I can understand wanting to keep the old gold, I find myself more and more drawn to that.
