The hit(assuming that is what it is)makes it look a little like 1999.
The NGC example falls well short given all of those spots. Of course they may not have been there when the coin was graded.

I think the PCGS coin is better, and that was just graded.
If you think grades are running out of control, I dare you to crack all your coins and send them in right now. According to you, they should all go up. According to me, you will be back here crying and crying, more than usual.

I compare these to 38-D Buffalo Nickels. Although these are more rare there are only subtle differences between the 67 coins and the 68 coins but the price spread is huge. The differences appear to be in original surface texture as well as number of hits. Strike still doesn't mean as much.
Weakness in the O and PL make both of these max 66 (in my old-timers book). It's gotta be fully-struck for me to consider it having such a lofty grade. This issue is common fully struck so there is no excuse.

It does appear to be a hit/nick, and IMHO, you should never see this in the focal area of a 68, let alone a 67...A beautiful coin nonetheless.

Interesting for sure, technically speaking I think the new 68 falls short due to the hit on the obv and the carbon on the rev. However the fantastic and booming mint bloom seems to have carried it to the lofty grade.

I posted a few weeks ago my concern about 67+'s appearing in the early Lincolns and now a 68. I see some other coins made that are not like this ... they are huge ones. Everybody ready to see NGC values for their PCGS coins?
No, it's in a run of the mill, no prong NGC holder.

It’s a good thing that MS 70 is the highest grade possible otherwise we’d have MS 72 coins in a few years.
Beautiful coin, with full strike and early die state. That one I would call an MS68.

I've thought about regrading this old holdered MS67 but it's a tough game to play.

I'd leave it in the old holder. Its nice the way it is. If you're selling then I could see trying for a 68.

I agree with Wabbit, lately I've noticed the newer PCGS slabs are very conservative. I love it when buying for the collection.

i have a 68+ but it's modern. I would almost call this circulation strike coin "Prooflike".
I personally would have classified this coin RB and not RD (the entire obverse is toned and a part of the reverse)
and possibly MS69. (MS69RB).

Some very nice cents....I believe there are many old 'rolls' or well preserved collector coins out there that have never been to a TPG. Given that, we could one day see an MS69 and gradeflation would have nothing to do with the issue. Cheers, RickO

100% stickered. There would be no reason for me to crack out any of my coins
Unless you are willing to bet me $ 1,000,000. I would bet at least 80% grade the same or higher.

Ikeigwin - York 1909 VDB is a nice coin but lacks mint bloom and color. There is also rub or cabinet friction on Lincoln’s lapel.Leave it alone !
Zion’s - The other 1909 VDB graded ms 68 red resides in the High Desert collection. The present specimen graded ms 68 red is much finer IMO
Element - I agree the Ms 68 red/brown is stunning. I believe it brought almost $ 25,000 in auction. That was double the price guide value ! I doubt this Ms 68 red will bring that amount

Got an NGC MS67 RD as a birthday present from my wife . .via a dealer we both knew. Fun . . old holder . . . .eventually sold it for about 20x my purchase price. Not bad . .

Buddy of mine said there was a simple little coin shop in Parowan, UT (near Cedar City). Next time down, I located it up some narrow stairs to a second floor balcony overlooking the main street . . . . and only street . . . in Parowan. One rotating case . . .guys had about 1/3 of just my collection in his inventory . . .except a very nice 1909-VDB.
Got it graded . . . . . . . . . . . MS67RD. At the time . . . it was tied for finest. Sure had 'the look' of a 68 . . . . but I was never adept at the game. Still, I bought it for $30 . . . had it as my 09-VDB in the slabbed 7070 for as decade or so . . . then sold it, but not for $30.

These are such frustrating threads to read.
I'll never forget one LB show many year ago where PCGS made 3 $1 1921 Peace in MS67!!!! We had already bought one and now had to buy another. Couldn't get the 3rd one. Pop went from 3 to 6 that weekend.
