What was your biggest "YOU SUCK" score on eBay?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm still looking for that $15K Rarity-8 token to cross with a $50.00 BIN.

Has anyone else snagged anything uber rare?

    I've cherry picked 3 1911-D $2 1/2 Indians. Each under $300.

It is verboten to give oneself the YS award. ;)

Biggest win here was about an $1800 group of modern silver commems for $500.

On the flip side, I sold two silver Eagles in rattler holders for $300 each, buy it now. Probably 5 years ago. They sell now for $1000 each.

I have had a half dozen or so multi hundred dollar buys turn into multi thousand sells. That said I have a had a few thousand worth of buys turn into a few hundred in sales so I try not to focus on the cash too much.

I think the best I've done was a 28-s Peace Dollar in an ACG-65 holder for $100. Graded 64 at PCGS.

The best I ever did was not on eBay, it was at a local show. I bought the 1919 DDO Mercury Dime that is now the PCGS XF-40. I paid $7.00 for it.

I bought a 1920 SLQ from a forum member some years ago for $100. It was the ugliest and cruddiest SLQ. Sent it in to get graded by our host and it came back MS-65FH !!! :)

1918/7- D Buffalo that went into a PGCS-4 holder from a batch of Buffalos I bought for 10-or-15 cents each. Sold for $775 but still hoping for something newer to finally update my tag line.

Uh-oh, just realized the post referred to ebay. Have had many scores there but no "You Sucks."

For this year it’s a 1916-d Buffalo Nickel I bought off eBay for $195.00 shipped. It graded in at a 66 and now CAC’ed. I have no intention of selling this piece but the value is up there for what I paid. It fits nicely in my collection.

Best one was an unattributed 1873 DDO dime, purchased for $100, sold for mid four figures. New owner got it into a PCGS AU58 holder.

Out of respect for the OP, I won’t mention my profit when I flipped him a cherypicked double clipped 2002-S proof Sacagawea dollar.

Maybe 15 years ago, a full set, circulated, Lincoln less the 1922, lousy pictures, when it all was an auction. The only decent picture was the later stuff, nothing about the early pages. It was in the cheap blue album, no reverse pictures, and the picture was taken from across the room. ,

The 1909-S was fine, the 09-s VDB was very good, and the 14-D was very good. All for a couple hundred.

$200 for a 1913 Var 1 buff that was an unattributed 3 1/2 legs. Sold it for $10,350 in a Heritage auction around 12 years ago. Had a couple of 10 grand plus 'picks from shows and shops, too.

    Earlier thread

There are dozens of stories in the forum archives of items purchased for under $1,000 and sold for over $10,000. Maybe hundreds of stories by now. In terms of sheer magnitude, SUMORADA's record is unassailable as far as I'm concerned.

  • 7Jaguars7Jaguars Posts: 7,767 ✭✭✭✭✭

OK, well for the dark side, I bought an 1838 sovereign that had poor pictures but I suspected it was worth a gamble. About 12 years ago I paid L1250 pounds / ~ $2000 and traded for L17k pounds/ $24k as it turned out to be the discovery pattern proof of that date.

Twice in last 5 years I bought a scarce variety token on ebay for an average of $500 and sold it for an average of $4500.

    What is SUMADORA's record purchase?

You guys all win! A satisfying adventure was purchasing a raw 1971-D Ike that appeared to offer soft blue and pink toning graded (on a Long Beach show walk-through) at MS67. I was lucky for a while there about ten- fifteen years ago by finding three uncirculated 1928 Peace dollars that were mysteriously labeled as S mint by the sellers (all unrelated and all over a four month period). Each came back MS62; MS62, and MS63 (P) by PCGS. I was able to determine later the, "S" in the title of these auctions probably referred to "Silver" yet prevented other potential buyers from opening the auction and bidding.

I didn't mind paying you the price you asked as I thought it was very fair.

It was still a good buy for me since it's the only one known :)

7-8 years ago I bought a ultimate full head 1926-S SLQ in a ANACS UNC details holder for $210 BIN on eBay in the middle of the night. It was a great strike, but hand been over dipped and had black spots from dip residue. Jay Cline jumped the gun and offered me $2200 before I could mention what I wanted. $2800 if NGC could remove the spots. So I talked to David at the NGC booth and we both agreed the coin was well beyond another dip and took the $2200.

New Years Day was very good to me one year too. About a decade ago MCM had a proof NGC error on eBay for like $50 opening bid and it had a lot of watchers but I guess everyone was hungover? I was the only bidder and consigned it to Bowers & Merena and ended up netting about a $1,250 profit.

Not as good as the above stories, but I noted a 1909 S Lincoln cent, AU.

I thought it looked like a possible unc, and got it for about $110, all in.

Got it and I was sure it was an unc.

Now in a 63 RB holder S Over Horizontal S

I haven't told this story in a while, but back when I was in college and first getting into varieties, I went to a local auction and bought a group of Whitman folders with partial circulated sets of Wheat cents for $20. In one of them, in the spot for the 1922 Plain, was a 1922 no D, strong reverse. ANACS graded it Good, and after I sold it to a local dealer for $150 I used the money to buy a nice interview suit.

My dad got this back of bid via a horrible picture. I later sold it for $3k. I worry about the coin, the buyer was very odd.

My best was a mispriced GSA on July 4th waiting to go out and do fireworks. I think I made $3000 on a flip to a dealer.

Just speaking ebay...This still remains my best pick. I must add that the original ebay picture was of very low quality but just good enough to buy this 1936 DDO # 2 raw for $9 delivered. Its now in my set graded MS 64 RED with a current BV of $1150. I was so proud of this coin I had expert photographer Jason Cuvelier photograph it for me.
