Al, your post about when I posted the PSA 9 Philley made me go back to Sept 18 when I first posted the card....

I said then that this is a 'perfect Philley'.......I guess that I was right!!

Don ...........................Beautiful Bobby Richardson card ! Question about the Hannebrink card .............which
by the way is a beauty also ...................I looked up the Pop on this card and noticed that the Hannebrink
card without and with the trade statements ..................and just a pop card of a ' plain ' Hannebrink ?????? what
makes that card different then the trade card with and without trade ???? Shows a pop of one nine and 17 eights .........
or is this just a case of Psa recognizing this issue years later and the card pop is screwed up ????

Hi Robbie.....you are correct, PSA did not start grading the variation until later so a number of Hanebrink's are graded before that time without any reference to the variation, so that is why you see three different Hanebrink's in the pop report. There are really only two that exist, with and without the trade statement. The same is true for the other four variations like this....Lumenti, etc.

Another great card, Don. I read that Neil had a pinch hit single in his first ML game, but then had Pedro Ramos a pitcher, pinch run for him. Must not have been fleet of foot.

Man I love this thread, and I'm incredibly impressed that Don is as high on the registry as he is. When your standards are so high and you're not willing to accept bad examples of the grade, it makes it tough to compete with the flip collectors. Don's set is one for the history books, and if I ever try to collect an older set, it will be this one!

I always remember Bobby Shantz as being part of my 1964 World Series Champions Dream Team St. Louis Cardinals ! What I thought was interesting , was learning that Bobby was the First Pitcher in Franchise History for the Houston Colt 45's in 1962 ........1st to win a game .........and 1st to throw a complete game !

Robby--- as a follow up to your observation about Shantz and the 64 Cardinals, one of the iconic Topps goofs involves Bobby. Card 134 in the 65 set purports to show Mantle hitting a "clutch" home run off Shantz, but instead it pictures Mantle whiffing on a Gibson fastball.

Game one of that series was the first time I attended a World Series game

I could look it up ..................but was game # 1 in St. Louis or New York ???? You are so lucky to have gotten to see a
1964 Series game ! I've still yet to attend a World Series game ! Did you keep your World Series ticket stubs from that
game ???? I was 13 years old in 1964 and I remember taking a transistor radio with an earplug to listen to the games while in the classroom ........all the games back then for World Series were day games !
And I had no idea about the validity of card # 134 ..............that's what I love about this message board ..........you learn something every day !

It's supposedly Barney Schultz, if I'm not mistaken.

Schultz is right. IZ getting old, as Bob just indicated. It was when they played up on Grand Avenue, two stadiums ago, before the move downtown. Was 14. Unfortunately Musial had retired in 63. Mantle, Maris, Ford, Berra for Yankees. I think my Mom drove me. Would not drive up that way theses days without police escort

Beautiful card Don.

Norm was traded by the Yanks, along with Bauer and Larsen to KC for Roger Maris at the end of 1959, but while Maris went on to hit his 61 HRs in 1961, Norm had 117 RBIs in 1962

He passed in 2015. Lemke used to keep a list of players from the 1952 set that were still living. After his death someone updated the list in April or May of this year. At that time it was 37, maybe fewer now. Wonder how many of the 59ers are still with us.

Geez, Don, you are really on a role

Coates had the endearing nick name "The Mummy". In his book Ball Four, Bouton noted that Coates had a habit of throwing at batters and then wisely avoiding the bench fights that followed. Pretty good pitcher for some really good Yankee teams, particularly the 61 team

Murry's nickname was Thomas Edison. While he never really orbited earth, he did lead the league in losses for 3 straight years, 52-54... And did help the Cardinals win a world championship in 1946. And Joe and Marilyn and Murry did threesomes.

Bob's middle name was Houston. Our Bob, the F one, will probably say Hale took that name when he was at NASA supervising Murry's jog around the moon, but I checked that out on snopes and it is not at all true
