I don't collect this set, but I do collect all Topps sports wrappers up through 1980...and this just came in the mail!

Those are gorgeous cards. The 1959 design has never been my favorite, but that could change if I had beautiful cards like the ones posted.

What I like most about this set is the colors.

    Nice wrapper, PaulMaul.....

Jack may never have looked better Don.

Could not find much of interest about him, except that he was related to Margo Harshman, an actress, who briefly played Sheldon Cooper's sexy assistant on some episodes of The Big Bang Theory...and he played baseball at the major league level.

What planet have you been visiting Don to find these things ? Not Texas for sure.

Poll-- which pose of Bobby do you favor most, that on his 59 or 60 card ?

Al, I think that I like the 59 better than the 60 pose because they are the same. :D

I have been visiting the Topps factory recently and found the printing press.....definitely not in Texas.

Is this the last card that used the name "Red Legs?"

  • bishopbishop Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭

Whoa, is that a colored line at the bottom of that card ? :)

I have a 1959 topps venezuelan Spahn #40. at best a 2. date of birth. 1921( the corrected version.) On e bay is a psa 2 spahn which says on the front label 1931 dob. there is no picture of the back. What gives? There was not two printing plates with 2 errors in two countries.???? I have seen many psa 7s with the topps Venezuela label, but on the back it says printed in U S A. How could they be topps Ven. if printed in U S A. ????

According to one of the last post on the 54net, all Spahns have 1921 as dob and gray back. Thus the e bay graded 1931 must be incorrectly graded.

  • marinermariner Posts: 2,603 ✭✭✭✭

    PaulMaul....yes, last year of Redlegs.....

    1959.....It probably is incorrectly graded.....

Rudy, as he is affectionately known in his home country of Cuba, is still alive and never lost a single game during his time in the majors. He was almost as perfect as this card of Don's

Just had to look this up when you said he never lost a game in the Majors..............or the Minors as he never played in the Minors ! Signed as a Amateur Free Agent and pitched just the one season winning two games and saved two games ! Another nice card Don !

Another beauty Don. I had forgotten it was an UER card.

As a Cardinals fan, in retrospect, the trade of Cuellar to Houston for Hal Woodeshick in 1965 was one to regret.

In 1974 he was one of four Oriole pitchers to win 20 games. Regrettably only Jim Palmer remains.

A P Nut has correctly advised me it was 1971...but Don and I still remember the 1971 season pretty well

It is hard to believe anyone else actually reads this stuff

Al, I remember the '74 season well.....4 20 win pitchers in the same season, same team will probably never happen again.

Another beauty, and with another Cardinal connection. He had his best year in St Louis and then helped the Cards pry Curt Flood from the Reds ( too bad Bob :p )

Don-- great card but the flip incorrrectly lists his name :) Either that or Ed listed his name incorrectly all of his life. I think he is still with us.

This is all subject to check by the P Nut guy ;)

LOL Touché. I didn't notice that.

One of Elmer's biggest accomplishments was helping the Boston Braves get future MVP (1947) Bob Elliot from Pittsburg(h), and win the NL pennant a year latter, their last there before the first move.

Elmer can be found with a couple ( two separate ones) of scarce but recurring print defects which were posted earlier in this thread

Here is another 9 you should get Don. B) A recurring but pretty scarce print defect. I did not pay this much for mine,,,but it is not a 9. Better get it before Bob beats you to it

Sweet. I've always wanted an overpriced card with a print defect.

  • bishopbishop Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭

If the 9 is too pricey Bob you could go for something like this in an 8. Some refer to it as them squashed bug variant, others as the bird poop variant

I'll stick with squashed bug. It's definitely a repeated variation, so Don will need to get one too. :)

Don't tell PSA....they will create the variation in the Master set to get some more fees......that does sort of look like a squashed caterpillar, doesn't it?
