I got cold feet when the set was still in my shopping cart.
Something just didn't feel right when reading all the blogs over the past week. There was a certain amount of hype for the set, but the tone of many of the posts were wrong...

Most of those in this game (i.e. the one's who pay attention to things like mint marks) are the one's that can afford the $140.
But as I said (someplace in this thread, I think,) the majority of the collectors who want this coin (and are aware of it), has had over a half-year now to acquire one, and probably have one by now.
I wonder if the slow sales is more a reflection of the LESP set than the coin. I'll bet if this was a dollar set with a sacabuck and sold for around the price of the congrats set, or even a W/S ASE proof set, they would have been gone in the first couple of hours.

I don't see this coin going much above $100 which makes the $140 price point probably about right given the extra $22 in bullion and the $130 price point on the Congratulations sets on the secondary market. But that doesn't leave much room for appreciation.
The problem with the set is you take out the silver eagle and what do you do with the rest of the coins? This is the same issue with the EU set, you take out the best coins and the rest are scrap.

Happened to be on the mint website a little after 9:00 PDT and the set was available. So I ordered 2, everything processed and got the mint order confirmation. This morning they cancelled the order and sent an email later stating
Dear Valued Customer,
We received your order for the Limited Edition 2017 Silver Proof Set. Unfortunately, there was a system error that allowed orders for this product to be placed before the 12pm ET launch. Your order has been canceled and we encourage you to reorder today beginning at 12pm ET. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Were you able to order 2 this morning still or did the system say that you already ordered your limit of 2 even though they were cancelled?
Yep, although it gave me a household limit exceed the first time I tried.

You can stack them or sell them. 2017-S silver Kennedy halves by themselves are fetching north of $20 each. And current melt value of the quarters and dime is $16.20.
Ok i just got off the phone with PCGS this is what it will cost me. My first 2 sets when they get here I will pack in new box and NOT open the Mint packaging. Then;
1. membership Silver $60.00
Fill out Submission form
2. Handling Fee $10.00
3. Grading Fee 8 Coins X 2 Sets = 16 coins X $16.00 per coin for Modern = $ 256.00 +
4. First Strike w/ 1st Day of Issue ( if qualify) = $18.00 per coin = $288.00 for a grand total of $554.00 for both sets or $277.00 per set +
5. Return Shipping Cost by me = $ ? Not Bad! Joining right now
Just joined I am now a new Gold Club Member! Decided to splurge now I get 4 free complimentary submission I think I will use later for a special coin!
I think it would be great if this batch of 50k S mint eagles used a different die or a variety of a new die to distinguish them from the congrats set one.. Wishful thinking I know...!

Will the TPG's assign a different coin# for the ASE to distinguish it from the grad set. We shall see.

As far as varieties go, the standard bullion Eagle from the 2011 25th Anniversary Set had a small dimple in the tail feathers, so yeah, I could see something similar happening.
I was actually getting spooked by the fact these sets were still available despite the small profits being had from them, but then I remembered the same thing happened with the Convex/Concave Baseball Silver Dollars. They were available for over a week letting people really stock-up before sellout. Granted the stuff hit the fan on those after a bit, but some folks did pretty well

Back up the truck . Load it up !
Jobs are on the line.... layoffs are coming to the US Mint if you don't order up. So order up.
Yea but isn't offering old coin show dealers modern stuff like offering a vampire a whole crop of garlic?

there just isn't the collectors out there like back in the day and it's really showing in last 2 mint offerings, the 2017-S EU set and now this set. the mint is dumbfounded as why this set is still for sale. it's pretty simple, the collector base is shrinking fast, i know of 8 people who are selling off 30 and 40 year collections right now as they just announced their retirement. you could find silver coins in change at one time, the Millennials could care less about coins, they dealt with digital money their whole life
I'm cutting down on modern mass produce coins. The mint is just like the post office, producing millions of "collectibles" to make huge profits. Where does all that extra money go after they balance their own books?

I wouldn't count the younger generations out just yet. Many that will be inheriting coin collections might become interested when they see the value of these coins as investments they can hold in their hands. That's why a lot of us like them.

This is eventually a problem. But coins and stamps have long been "old man" hobbies. The Millennials are really not in this market just like anyone in that age bracket in previous generations. I played with coins as a kid with my grandfather. Then didn't touch them again until I was in my mid-30s. Pretty common story.
This could get interesting! I imagine one of the big boys bought them all up! MCM ect! Let me check my TV listing to see if the Coin Sale, 2 hour show has a special on cable!
So, all in for about $300 bucks plus the cost of the set you can have a set graded by pcgs with FS labels..... Is it worth it? I think it is not, but am welcome to some critical analysis...

I am starting to think this will be a bad idea. I suspect the coins will come in Monday and I should have a few days to sleep on it! The only reason I bought this was for the Silver Dollar and the Half Dollar has some value.
I wouldn't think the S Silver Eagles would be available for First Strike, however....I'm sure someone will think of wording the label as a Silver Set First Strike or First Day and charge a premium.
I bought the limit of 2 yesterday and could have bought more today when the limits were lifted but didn't. Yes, the Eagle is beautiful and being an S mint is rare but I'm not a fan of these quarters....those mounds are dreadful. Silver dime.....hmmmmm. Is that Kennedy very special? These silver sets are always packaged too big and really eat up space. I believe the majority of these sets were basically bought just for that Eagle...which makes that Congratulations set even more attractive...even though it's sold out. What's next? Medal Mania?

I think most US Mint coins are packaged in too big of boxes. I think everyone hates the huge presentation boxes that special coins come in. Who the hell displays their coins in these fancy safe gobbling boxes anyway?
then 20,000 over the next 10 hours after HH lifted.
Guess the dealers stepped in, with discounts from the mint and grading they can make the money on volume. Not much would be left on the bone for us mortals.

Someone must like the boxes, when you go to sell the coins dealers always seem to want the OGP to go along with them.

The post office loses money overall, so there's no "extra money". The Mint ultimately makes money, but in their annual report they actually LOSE money on annual sets and make money on bullion.

That number has been dropping steadily for 2 days. They were selling in the pre-sale for as much as $280. Then $220 yesterday. Then down to $180 before the sell-out.

Thank you. I’ve been a lurker for a while.
Sales must have been really low to lift limit this quick. Always a crap shoot as there is a lot of crap to shoot at.
Which means the graded eagles are going to be priced even higher.
We need to get this set off the Mint's shelves. It's taking too much attention away from the 2017-S EU set.

Silver Eagles identified as being from this set are likely to be fewer in number and more expensive than those from the Congratulations Set.
