Here's another raw Barber Dime purchase, an 1898 S:

...looks like the undesired machine doubling...

Clarifying, variety services unfortunately don't call these overdates is what I am getting at. Earlier on I was reminded of the same in this thread when I was showing doubling on the reverse of my '98-S quarter. I'll have to take mental note of this ('98-S coins being common with machine doubling) as a potential future study topic. I received an email this week from Steve Hustad asking me to submit an article to the BCCS Journal regarding the identification/locating of a "photographed" '97-S/S East dime I recently posted a few days ago... that '98-S dime of Jeff's has pleasing surface quality to me - nicely lustrous and reflective... the coin is definitely awesome!

Mike, Speaking of reflectivity... holy smokes! that '02 is beaming. Beautiful color on the second one. Proud ownership I am sure on both!

Craig, I have noticed my purchase interests have moved up the food chain lately into XF from F/VF... partially because my quarter set is nearly complete at the lower level (only need the big 3). It makes me some times divert my attention away from those and your thoughts makes me think if I ever decide to sell, will sadness take over later? yet we are constantly refining our pursuits as well and don't have unlimited funds. I used to work in the auto industry and got out of SE Michigan in '06 before the bankruptcies and '08 crash. It was a hard decision and I had to sell my home for less than I purchased it. Sale of my collection had to make up for the shortfalls at that time. I had a large number of gold Dahlonega $5's in those days. I was in the midst if a set - purchases in the early to mid '90's. Just like Justin said, circumstances cause stops, restarts, reconsiderations, and of course some sadness sometimes in the journey. I at least take comfort in knowing that my beauties sit in nice homes. Vern, Lenny, and Milo are good caretakers. You love your children, yes, but when you see them grow up, you sometimes gotta let them go - hoping they stop by and visit once in a while so you can see them (big hint).

Here's my 1902 Phila from my Dansco - at first, PCGS wouldn't give it a solid grade - saying it was
AT... and I subsequently sent it ATS - where it came back as an NGC 58.

I later sent it back in the NGC holder [ a few years later ] and the coin was returned as an AU 55.

Jeff - Looks like the grading gods did well by you.

Darrell - Nice pickup. Barber halves used for love tokens are rare from what I've found.

Doug - My pics don't do your 07-O justice at all.

Tim - Lenny, Milo and I are happy that the great majority of Doug's qtrs stayed in the family.

Mike - Your '02 dime sure is a beauty.

Went to a local show yesterday and came away with a Washington qtr and two Morgans. I must be losing my mind.

Tim - Keep the F/VF set if you can as you build your XF set. Going through my Barber Quarters I can say I have no regrets recovering most of my old sales. However, prior to building the sets that I have (even a few good ones!) I invested in my most important investment, my children's education. The investment that lasts for my lifetime.

I wish you well and leave you with an old favorite.

    Nice '12 Half Jim!!

Here are a couple of Barber Quarters fresh from the grading room, both raw pickups:

    1904 O, PC AU 53:

This upgrades the current XF 40 in my set.

    1915 S PC AU 50:

This upgrades the current VF 35 in my set.

Both coins are tough to find raw in AU (that will grade, that is).

Jeff, Nice job with the raw coins and the PCGS gods, and I agree, could easily be a 58. It will be up to Milo to get it upgraded some day, and then I'll be jealous.

Justin, I am a quarter collector (occasionally dimes) so since there are remaining half dates to be looking for, maybe I can help as well. I'll take a look at your everyman set for dates.

Mike, Always special when being able to see electric blue on your coins! The '92 and '02 are exquisite!

Vern, You don't buy junk, those Morgans and Washington must be special! BTW, I'll be coming back from a trip out East on the 27th. Might not be until the 28th when I am able to reach Schaumburg.

Lenny, Nice '95-S! whether in 55 or 58.

Craig, I don't have any intention of selling my F/VF Wayte Raymond set anytime soon. I want to enjoy gazing at coins sitting within those pages for a good number of years yet. What a splash of color can do to a quarter like that '95-S! Man 'o man!

    Jim, Nice '12-P half!

Jeff, Thanks so much on the recent transaction. The '04-O and '15-S are nice upgrades for your set. Once again, the pictures look great! Too bad I can't agree and like the post at the same time.

I received a dozen or so Barber Dimes and Quarters back from grading this week. A couple didn't upgrade anything; they'll just go up for sale. I'm having computer problems; it quit communicating with my camera during my photo shoot a couple of nights ago. Most of the newps will need to wait a bit for a photo session until I can get things working again. Mike will really like my new AU 58 Dime- guess why?

Here's the last coin I was able to shoot the other night, my new 1908 PC AU 58 Quarter:

I had a very difficult time finding a nice AU '08 Quarter; is it that tough a coin?

The 1908 Phila Quarter in Choice AU is a tougher coin to find than many realize.
I thought we discussed this not too long ago...I could be wrong though....

That's one sweet Quarter, Jeff. Now, what's the surprise awaiting me ? Some
amazingly beautiful toned Dime in a 58 CAC holder ??

The new 1892 Dime in PCGS 63 w/ Green CAC arrived today - as usual, they are
much nicer in hand than in the pics. Very pleased. It's going to Messydesk soon
for professional images as Valente151 is so bogged down.

Tim - The Washington qtr is my kind of coin, just born 21 years too late and at the wrong location. The Morgans I saved from going to the bullion guy, as they have the hazy look I like in a nice AU.

Jeff - It never hurts to see a goodd looking Barber again.

Pics for this PM, newp into Jim's collection (hopefully he'll find a higher grade one he likes someday, so I can get this one), PC40:

Goodness! '96-P PC67 CAC with wild color? you definitely don't see that everyday!

Quality circ halves jinx. Love 'em! Dimes aren't bad either... especially the '07-S. IMO, the '05-S is a bit more common than the '07-S. It is interesting to me how the mintmark shapes and sizes can change from year after year.

    Jim, Nice '11-S!

    Vern, Tough '32-D. Nice looker.

Jeff, The '08-P is one of the sleeper (if not THE sleeper), tough mid-series dates. Although it may not be as expensive per se like the '13-P, in circ. mid-grades the '08-P shows up infrequently vs. all the other P dates. I haven't studied in full detail the higher-end AU grades but I would think it would not be far off from being in the top 3 or 4 of the toughest P dates for the entire series.

I am still waiting for our hosts to return my Barber quarter submissions.

Lenny, Surprised you picked up a PC40 vs. the quality, high AU I have seen from Vern's pics as of late. Nice none the less! The strike and level of wear looks better than a 40 to me... closer to a 45.

I picked up another 1892 25C, this one has some really nice rim tone and my eyes may be playing tricks on me, but I believe that I see some doubling on the lower portions of the letters in QUARTER on the reverse of this Type I. I don't have it in hand yet, scheduled for tomorrow, and I will follow up.

Lots of luster + !. A smaller level of cheek scatter but enough to pull it away from the Gem flash. Staying conservative, I think I will rhyme on this one: "MS63 on that '01-P" but I would plus it, CAC it.
