Tim, are the first pics the seller pics of the 91? If so, the marks alone would have kept me away. Also, it has what I call pasty surfaces. Like the skin was chemically removed, All but one of the coins in my set that I had graded came from eBay. I've had plenty experience with pics from eBay and the actual quality you receive, I don't have nearly the return rate of Jeff, but then again, when you are on that border of AU/MS it's a heck of a lot harder to decipher.

Mike - Thanks on my raw 13-S, but I figure it's more of a F-12. I bought it from Clayton (who you may remember) in 1998. I didn't know it until a few years later but it came from a large old time collection that a local auctioneer sold over a period of at least 15 years. I have at least 3 other coins in my collection that came from that old collection. I wish I'd been aware of what was being auctioned back when it started.

scooped out heads, and an overall soft strike. My best one was an MS 63 - and I always considered it a hole filler.

Jeff, Mike, The BCCS data analysis showed that the '08-P was one of the least collected Philadelphia quarters - tougher than the '94 and '96. The '13-P has more notariety and is collected or hoarded more frequently because of it. The '08-P is unnoticed and a sleeper.

As a kid in the late 60's and early 70's I began collecting VG to VF Barber Halves. I don't think I had much of a set by the time I went to college and forgot about coins for a while. In 1980 I had graduated from college and was married; I began to think about coins again. In March of 1980 I was at a coin show in Minneapolis and ran across a beautiful looking 1892 S Barber Half (obviously raw). It looked flawless to me. The dealer wanted $675 for it- a LOT of money at the time. I decided to purchase it. About 6 years ago I finally got it graded; it came back in an AU 55 holder:
Although this coin is no longer in my Everyman Registry set (I have a 58 there) it holds a very special place in my heart; it's the coin that set me on the quest to put together an AU set of Barber Halves.
I've been working on completing my V Nickel sets - and I just picked up this "missing date"...
or, I've lost my memory completely... God only knows....
Not all that Earth shaking - but looks nice - for what it is....

Interesting exchange about where all the Barber collectors have gone.
I still like to read the thread, and although I like working on other areas of the hobby as Mike alluded to, I still get excited when something new and special comes along. I've definitely reached the point where I buy what I like, not what I need. That opens up lots of new and exciting doors. I only wish I could find a few more choice Barbers priced right.
Mike, I'll guess 64 unless the cheek discoloration is not contact marks... then I would be closer to Jeff's assessment. The picture got a little fuzzy when I zoomed in. Nice color. A slight amount of weakness in the hair curls area is what I am taking away from the picture.
Jeff, a little bit of weakness in the eagle's armpit doesn't detract. Nice color.

This has probably been my longest absence in years. My wife and I made the return to northern Illinois after 10 weeks in beautiful South Carolina. Go Gamecocks. The transition has left me a little unorganized. Anyway, hope to get back to the forum on my usual regular basis. There will be many new pics over the next few weeks as, in addition to receiving a box from Paesan, four (Doug, Jim, Milo and I) of us forumites met for a wonderful coin show of our own last Sunday. Many of their newps are in my hands waiting for pictures. What a great hobby, especially so when it is shared with really nice friends.
Mike - Congrats on all the newp V Nickels.

Met with JeffRM last night - looked over a large group of his halves -
{ Very Impressive - BTW } and then proceeded to go out to dinner.
We had an enjoyable dinner meeting - and afterwards, I showed
off my Proof Dimes - a few Quarters and the remaining balance of my Halves.
My PCGS submissions for Srotag are due any moment - and I have a large consignment going to CAC for he and a friend. I've still got a few odds and ends to submit myself. Waiting for my newps to arrive that do not have a Green Bean...

Although I requested True Views, none were posted. I called Phil and reassured me

In addition to the '06-D, a return of an MS67+ '82-S Morgan, '30-P Merc in 66FB, '31-D in 64+FB shows I had a good-sized score which I can honestly parlay into my 'happy' dance today. It will extend funds at a future point for more quality Barber purchases SMILE .

Wow am I excited about my recent pickup. Barber dime. 1897-S in NGC XF45. Nice in that I think I now have what is mentioned in Breen's (also in Feigenbaum's text referencing Breen) as the S over S East. Noticed it is not attributed as a variety. That includes the major 3rd party graders and even Cherrypickers Guide (CPG) by Fivaz/Stanton. Looks like another crossover candidate to our hosts. BCCS has not done a variety survey yet, right? How rare is the S/S east? Does anyone on this thread have one? I have another '97-S... need to go take a look at that one more closely.
