Does anyone here know him well enough to know whether he had any health related issues, or does he keep that sort of thing to himself?

I sure hope he has a full and speedy recovery. My practice is largely preventive care, and an inexpensive coronary artery calcium score, done in a special CT scanner, can identify people at increased risk for coronary artery disease.
Cost locally is about $125. Way more accurate than cholesterol measurements. All you need is an order from your doctor and access to the special scanner.
Oh gosh I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. Right at the holidays too. I will pray for him this eve.
Get well soon George,
