I love the look of rhedden's '73 Half; a great coin!
I sent 25 Seated Half Dimes in NGC holders in February; they should be grading soon. It will be interesting to see how many cross. Once I receive them I'll photograph them and start posting. I think the Half Dime is the Rodney Dangerfield of US coins- it doesn't get any respect.....

Ron - Wonderful newp. Just the right look IMO. I see your point on the restoration of the 73-CC quarter, but when a dealer sells it and then refuses to deal with its history when presented with ironclad proof, it's not so good for the hobby.

Love the look of your 73 quarter, wish I'd seen it first.
There hasn't been a thread concerning my previous 73-CC quarter. but all my close collecting friends and dealers,
as well as PCGS and CAC, know the details. The coin sold twice at auction in the last ten years in a details grade
NGC holder with cleaning designated. I believe both times it sold between 7-9K. I purchased the doctored coin from a large
dealer in a PCGS VF25 CAC holder for 27K. A month or two after my purchase I was researching 73-CC quarters
in the auction archive function of PCGS and noticed my supposedly wholesome coin in it's previous state. After my
initial shock and disappointment, I contacted the dealer for some type of resolution. When the dealer was unwilling
to make it right I enlisted the assistance of Gerry Fortin. Gerry got JA at CAC and David Hall at PCGS involved and I was
made whole on the coin. This experience was the impetus behind Gerry's Gobrecht Journal article in issue #125,
"Using Numismatic Provenance as Buyer Protection." I've come away from this experience amazed and sickened
by how deceptive coin doctoring can be. But I've also had my faith in our great hobby restored by Gerry, John, and
David Hall for their integrity and willingness to do the right thing.Doug

Wow, that is a rather shocking story about the 1873-cc quarter. When I said the doctoring might actually be good for the hobby, I did not picture an $8k coin turning into a $27k coin with no disclosure. The problem there is that the old pictures still exist in the auction archive, which could cost the new owner dearly at some future point when the doctoring is discovered by someone else. I do think the coin's restoration has been expertly done, and you could not ask for much better, however.
I have found a couple of egregious examples of doctoring of Seated quarters the past year using the same method. In one case, an MS coin was utterly ruined by dipping, but the asking price increased anyway. In the other case, a VF details /cleaned coin went into a top tier TPG holder as XF45, and the price doubled. It was doctored so much as to be barely recognizable, like your 1873-cc, but it did not look as nice as your 1873-cc, and it wasn't an XF45 either. I cannot ID these coins on a forum because both are in the current inventory of dealers. Just be aware that any purchase of rare date Seated material has to be thoroughly researched, even if it's slabbed.
