Mike- don't get me wrong I love barbers as they were my first type coin project but something about the seated series and it's history has me absolutely intrigued. Also there is alot of times coins in the series.

As the amazing 07-O above is say it's a 58+

    Mike-

Let me know when Lenny convinces you your '05 S 25C is a horrible coin not worth owning. I know someone that likes white coins. I believe in accepting coins of all races, religions, and colors. imageimage

Its not that I disagree with Lenny's point of view - I have been known to
get a coin here and there that did not meet up with my collecting friends'
opinions. If there were a nicer AU 58 out there, It'd be mine. Lenny has a great
sense of originality - he's only pointing out what I should be aware of.

Not saying I'll never sell this 05-S in 58 - I'm always on the prowl for upgrades,
even if they are a lesser grade [ I have picked up a few 55's to replace 58's ]

Mike, I saw the 05-S on Heritage and I knew you'd like it. I'm glad you won it. I thought about buying it for a flip because it really is a tough date, but I knew you'd be owning it so I hope you got a deal.

    Jeff, I'm feeling the love.

Remember, my comment was about the grading service, not the coin.

No jab intended at you Lenny. We all know you have specific targetd look you demand of coins you wish to collect. The look you prefer is highly sought after and coveted by most.

I was just letting the world know I'm not as focused in my taste, and enjoy a broad range of appearances. It's likely someday I'll wake up an say "what was I thinking", but as they say innorance is bliss. I'm blissful at this time.

I guess it's a striking misinterpretation because the coin has flawless obverse and the reverse looks to have wear on the wings.

Your guess the grade was incorrect, BTW. ( 1907-O ).

Mike - Congrats on getting your 07-O graded. Just to guess a grade, I'll go 58.

Hope you gentlemen in Florida a weathering the hurricane without too much problem.

Three guesses so far on my (ex) raw 1907-O Quarter...

Two guesses were AU 58, and 58+, the third was 63+.

Any other guesses ? No cheating now because I posted
    the True View.

The other day, I was offered what I consider "the Poor Man's
1913 Liberty Head Nickel". Actually, almost as rare as the 1913.

Edit: ( to show off something I have lusted over for many years ! )

    Mike,

Hope you are doing okay with the weather. The 82 nickel is very interesting. You certainly have a serious group of sources my friend. If you are looking to raise funds, I'll contribute. Just let me know what you want for that 98-P AU50 half you posted a few pages back. Best wishes to all our Florida forum Barber boys. Pretty serious stuff, In Iowa we just have to dodge the occasional tornado. Oh and also freeze our butts off every January!

Mike - That V Nick pattern is really neat. Hope you find a way to add it to your collection.

Pics for this AM, it's not often I add a barber half to my collection as I only seek out about 14 dates and I tend to be a little picky about their condition. This one has been on my radar since a collector friend acquired it several years ago. He surprised me yesterday by deciding to sell. I posted this about three months ago when I was able to take pics of it, but I llike it so much that I thought I'd post it again, PC53:

Florida Buddies - I hope all has been well for you and your families during the hurricane. It sounded like it was pretty tough in some areas. Up here in Wisconsin, not as many tornados as in Iowa or Kansas, but seeing -21 in the rear view mirror can be a little brutal when its the ninth day in a row of temperatures at that level.

Darrell.... I need sunglasses when looking at that 97-S .... Holy cow !
    I am sure it's a 58 - but not a plus ( am I right ? ) .

New system takes some getting used to. Guess I should get on the
Lap Top and post some images - I need to see how easy it is to Edit.

Mike, it's the 58 in my set I think should be a +. The busyness on the obverse is amplified probably 3 times in my pictures as opposed to in hand. Brad bought the 97-S in 58+ and I simply couldn't make myself bid on a coin when I like the one I have better! Needless to say it seems we are the only 2 fish battling these days as he bought the 97-S pretty cheap compared to the older prices. I'm sure if I had participated the price realized probably would have doubled.

    Darrell-

In my opinion that's a beautiful '97 S, plus or not. Great luster!

There seems to be a difference of opinion from followers of this thread on originality (I think). Your '97 S is blast white. Some would say that it had to have been dipped in the past to look that way. Your thoughts?

I am a staunch believer(other than Morgan Dollars) any coins(minus very few exceptions) from the era of Barber on back had to have at least had a light dip to be Blast White. I think my 97-S has had a very light dip. Most people seem to agree a coin can be dipped 2 times without impairing the luster enough to keep it from being graded...albeit maybe a notch or 2 lower. As an example of my belief I will use my 97-S.

I think it has 1.75 dips left in it. If it is dipped the .75 it would likely come back a 55. Dip it again and it would probably drop to a 50-53. These grades can probably improve a notch or 2 if the coin retones attractively over time. Greene's coins are good example of old dips being forgiven when they attractively retone.

Personally I wish my whole set looked like my 97-S! followed by a close 2nd with the light iridescently toned coins like my 97-S probably was before it had a quick, light dip. I suspect the person who made the 97-S was the person who gave it this dip. I found out about it through a friend and saved it from being cracked out and resubmitted.

Verne, In the circles I run around with that is pretty much an accepted standard. Keep in mind a dip as I am describing is a full strength dip. The few times I have dipped a coin I start slow with a diluted solution and patiently seek my results. Once you go to far there is no going back!

Remember the 1892-O Broach Pin I found on the forums a few years back ?
I went to see the dealer who had it, to verify that it was a Micro O. The coin
had solder on the reverse and a friend bought it via my calling him on my cell
and he spoke with the dealer ( at the FUN show ).

The coin was sent to my friend and he in turn sent it to a recommended curator
who skillfully removed the solder by hand - leaving the surfaces of the coin in an
immaculate condition. The coin was submitted by another friend, Glenn Holsonbake,
and the coin was returned within a few days and it was holdered by PCGS - as a
"Cleaned" coin. No evidence of any repair was noticed, and I would grade the coin
AU 55 ( with issues )... But it's still an interesting coin - and a highlight in my friend's
    Half collection.

I'd post images but I hate to take any thunder away from my friend. I'm sure Darrell remembers
    the whole story.

    Nice new forum appearance.
Here's some of the several newps for my Barber Half Library of Coins Album #1 1892-1903 that I've been working on. I had a nice XF 97o and VF 01s raw (neither shown below) that I felt like building some sort of set around, and the first half series album seemed like a good way to go. Couple of choice Darrell coins here among the many crack-outs.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

Jeff - I think my '92 will take at least three submissions to get in a graded holder.

Mike - Joe made a wise acquisition of that micro O.

I received a Blue Box of coins in the mail yesterday; my latest Economy submission arrived.

One of the coins submitted was a 1900 O 25C. I purchased it in an old white ANACS AU 58 holder, cracked it out, and submitted it raw. I posted this coin earlier, it has amazing die breaks. The coin returned in an AU 53 holder:

The AU 53 grade seems conservative to me. I think it should be a 55, but I'm sure our hosts had their reasons.![](

Here are a couple that came back in Jeff's mail. Both purchased from Darrell earlier in the year. PC 15 and 30

  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

Jeff....the 1900-O is one of the hardest Quarters to locate - the anacs grade was way off,
and as Darrell mentioned - the 53 grade is closer to the actual grade. I'd think an AU 55
would have been a gift - but - the coin is what it is.

    Jeff:
Just a quick question: : when did you submit the coin and how long did you wait for the
    grade and its return ?

Yep- the coin is what it is. I do agree that the coin was overgraded by ANACS. The coin was part of an Economy Submission logged in at PCGS on August 11; the coins graded on October 11.

Here's a 1905 Barber Dime that came back in an AU 58 holder:

Nice looking 1905 Dime. Congrats. Yes, I think we all realize the coin is what it is.
Remember the old saying about making a silk purse ? No matter how hard we try
    and see that AU 58 - its a 53 { or what ever it says on the insert.}

    Only once or twice have I spotted an AU 58 { and I mean, hands down, a true AU 58 }
inside an AU 50 holder. Our friend, ARCO, has had the misfortune of having been
clipped a few grades because his coin was a tad too dark { natural toned } for the
graders' liking. One coin I believe [ I could be wrong here... :o } was his 1893-S -
that was in his old set that he sold / consigned to Glenn Holsonbake a few years back.
If I'm not mistaken, another friend, JMW, now owns that coin. I liked the coin very much
and would have bought it in a heart beat... had I known the time frame of its being offered
    to JMW... :'(

I got my grades on the economy submission of 8/26/16:
    1900 Nickel [ ex: ICG 58 - cracked out ] = "92" Cleaned { Valente hated the coin and said it was cleaned }
1901 Dime [ ex: ANACS 58 - cracked out] = "58" ...you can always use another AU 58 Dime.... ;)
    1911 Dime [ raw; AU ] = "58" ..... Valente didn't like this one either....LOL....

The last coin was a 1917-S REV Walker - it was in a PCGS 58 Holder - but PVC was noticed by CAC -
so - my YN Valente - gave it an acetone bath - and removed the PVC - he thought the now Raw Coin
could easily be a MS 62.... the Grading Gods saw otherwise - the coin is back in an AU 58 holder -
and once again, its off to CAC.

Ya know, I had such a premonition that my 1900 Nickel that I sent to PCGS [ now: 92 - Cleaned ]
would be bagged...and it was just fate I located the 1900 PCGS AU 58 from Glenn's site:
