Jeff - Congrats on the '05 dime.

DancingFire - That's quite an upgrade. Good eye on the crackout.

Thanks, but even after the upgrade to PR66 the coin still not worth what I paid in 1993. :'(

Ouch. I guess Proof Barbers just don't seem to have a thick audience, not that Business Strike Barbers do......

But hey, you have 2 great looking coins!

    I love them Barber Halves.....

DancingFire - I agree with Jeff, you have the coins, and they must have brought you some enjoyment over the years. To me, that's worth a lot.

Another great coin in Milo's set.

Here's another Barber Quarter that returned from the PCGS Grading Room Saturday, a 1910 AU 50:

Although this is a prettu common date it was a raw find. I think it has a nice pleasant look.

    I love them Barber Halves.....

I've been spending too much time at my 5 & 10 ($5 &$10 Liberty gold) so I thought it was time to go into the old Barber file. I've seen some very nice 00-O's and a 09-S so I've dug out a couple of my own. Lastly, I had to post one that most of you are sick of seeing but perhaps one or two new folks will like it.

    And my old favorite.

Ahhhh.... so that's what an AU 58 1900 O Quarter is supposed to look like....

Here's another raw purchase Barber Dime that recently came back from the grading room- a 1911 AU 58. It was obviously dipped (not by me), but it's still a decent looking coin. Hopefully it will tone back a bit through time......

Really like the 1910 Half Dollar, Jeff.

As I have not picked up any halves lately, here's my old 1910 for comparison's sake:

Jeff - Congrats on the raw '10 qtr. Not so common IMO.

Craig - Glad to see those beauties again.

DancingFire - Nice original looking 1900 half.

Thanks to Doug for hosting a wonderful coin afternoon yesterday. He, Jim, Milo and I met and had our own coin show and tell, and I'm confident that for a while there was no place in the midwest that had a better concentration of barber and seated coinage. It was a pleasure to meet you Milo. What a great hobby.

Vern, your friend's 96-S Quarter is quite nice. Interesting mottled toning
and still has strong motifs for a 30. It also seems to display some luster
under the toning - so - I think it's got to be one of the nicest 30's out there.

Darrell.... The 1910 Half is again, blinding - looks like the product of a recent dip.
It's one of my favorite dates - and has been since I started collecting Halves in 1967.

    Mike - I agree on Dan's 96-S qtr. Lot of detail for a 30.

Darrell - Lots of luster, I'm sure.

DancingFire - Nice, original looking '14.

    • Vern, again very nice raw barber quarters.

    • Jim, your 95-S half in 40 is just terrific with the PERFECT look.

Thanks again to Doug for his hospitality and a great afternoon being submerged with tremendous coins!! It was something being surrounded by that many “high end” seated liberty and barber coins.
Doug, Vern and Jim … the pleasure was all mine to meet you guys.

Vern, you are so right, what a great hobby.

Hard to say which is tougher in nice, original AU, the 07-S qtr or the 07-S half. Any thoughts?

I would have to say, hands down, it's the Quarter that's the most difficult to locate in the grades
    that I collect..... Quarters: AU 58 & Halves: XF 45 / AU 53

Mike,I wouldn't say it's hands down but the POP reports do support the Quarter. There are 31 quarters graded AU and 37 half's graded AU. If you knock out the 50's the Half wins by 1. Then ya have to wonder how many have been cracked and resubmitted. I would think the Half wins here. With all Don's resources and money to throw at anything he wanted he was unable to get an 07-S in 58. There are 8 Half's and 7 Quarters in 58. Anyone have the NGC Pops? My vote goes to the Half!

Might as well add the POPs. AU50,53,55,58

    Quarter 8/10/6/7
    Half 15/4/10/8

  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

Thanks for the POP edification, Darrell.... I have tried to locate an AU 58 1907-S Quarter but have been unable to locate one. The best I could come up with is a hole filler - an AU 53. So,
when I say "hands down", I'm speaking of personal experience. Should an AU 58 present itself,
I'll be on it like white on rice. Just as you mentioned that Don had a problem locating an AU 58
Half - I have the same problem locating the 58 Quarter.

Again, from personal experience and in the grade parameter that I set for myself, the 07-S which I have included in my Half collection was a non momentous event. It's an AU 50, with
a RPM. I would have just as easily gotten an XF 45 - but, I would have preferred an AU 53.

I only have one Half on my upgrade want list - the 97-O in 40 to 53. A couple of others in my half set should be improved upon, but it's not a burning issue with me. My Half Dollar set is on the
    "back burner".

Mike & Darrell - In AU-58 I've only seen one 07-S half in hand that I would like to own and that was Mike's that sold at his August 2011 auction. There was an AU-58 quarter that Heritage sold at Long Beach in Feb 2013, that looked like it had my kind of look, but I didn't see that in hand. I'd rate both equally tough when it comes to a nice hazy look that meets my personal preference in any AU grade.

Pics for this AM, the wonderfully lustrous 58 that used to belong to Scott and now belongs to JT:

    Here's my PC AU 58 '07 S Half. At least it's original!

This coin came on the market last fall the day AFTER Don Willis made a decision to retire his Barber Half set (as Don told me). Who knows, if Don was able to pick this up he may still have the set?

Hello all! - Finally joined the forum. It took me a while to get here but I have enjoyed catching up on all the dialog in Barber Mega Thread 3! Before I let you in on who this is typing in this entry to you, I'll let you try to guess which one of the folks in the BCCS 2013 Chicago World's Fair of Money group pic (first BMT3 picture) I am. Who am I?

I will post my first picture here soon. I reasonably purchased a nice 1906-D Barber Quarter in March 2015 - un-slabbed.

Darrell & Jeff - We'll find out what our hosts say on Dan's 07-S in the near future. I'm guessing it'll make it.

sedulous - Welcome to the Mega Thread. Don't know which barber fan you are in the opening picture (blind guess, John F.), but do know a few that you're not. Good looking 06-D qtr, by the way. I'd say we have similar tastes.
