Great looking 58 Nickel Mike. I agree on not spending the fees for a "+". Buy a fine point Sharpie instead and practice your penmanship.

Here's a Barber Quarter that arrived in the mail over the weekend- it should look VERY familiar to Mike......

It's in a PC55 holder with a Green Bean; just the way Mike likes them.

I bought an AU 58 off eBay last Christmas - but can't locate the images.
Valente151 did take new images around Memorial Day but he's been jammed
up applying to Med School - and I'm on the back burner.

While searching for the sellers' images of my newest 1894 in PC 58, I stumbled across this:

This was part of my 1st Quarter Collection.

Another raw Barber Quarter arrived in the mail yesterday, an 1899:

I'm hoping this comes back in a 58 holder, but it probably has a better chance at a 55, There's an interesting large die break on the reverse connecting the "D" in "UNITED" to the ribbon:

I haven't seen this type of die break before.

This brings me to three 58's that I need to complete the Circ. Set.
One of which - a 1901 - ICG 58 - which I cracked out - is at PCGS
for grading - "economy style" - lol

I really like the look of the '02 O Quarter.

I picked up a 1912 D Liberty Nickel in an ANACS old small white MS 64 holder:

Thoughts on this one crossing at the same grade? It's a clean coin with few marks, but the strike is rather weak. Am I better off submitting it raw or in the holder? Thoughts?

I agree with FtB a weak dip would bring the luster out and it would have a better shot at crossing at grade. The strike is surprisingly week for a 64 but the coin is near flawless. Very nice pickup as usual jeff

I received a few raw dimes back from the grading room last week. Most of them came back as XF 45 to AU 58, but the 1914 came back as a MS 63:

Not bad for $78.

Milo's 02-S in 53 should get a Gold CAC - should it get sent in.

Jeff...the 12-D is - as others have mentioned - a tad weak. However,
it's a typical strike. ( for a 12-D ). It's a clean surfaced coin and I see
it crossing over as a 64. I would crack it out and give it a quick acetone
bath - which will remove any accumulated surface contaminants. I don't
think acetone alone will revive the luster ( I am not familiar with the app-
ropiate dip to be used ).

Jeff- congratulations on the raw submission! You have a superb eye for raw coins that straight grade at Pcgs and that's not an easy feat.
Here's a NewP that I bid on a while back kinda regretted after but I won it and I'm trying to decide what to do with it. Either try to cross it at 58 or try to CAC or sell it because it's to white for my taste.

Mark.... I like the overall look of the 10-D Quarter.
I see it as a choice 55 - not as a 58. I'd crack it and
give it a very quick and very light dip before submitting
it to our hosts. If it comes back as I suspect, a 55, then
I'd send it to CAC where it's bound to Green Bean as a 55.
If - against all odds - it comes back as a 58, I wouldn't
think it would CAC as a 58.... JMHO

PS: make sure you neutralize the dip with a strong rinse
of distilled water and a very light blotting with a cotton
ball...do not rub...blot only !!

On the 12-D, the spots and strike will hold it back from crossing to a 64, with the spots being the determinant more than strike. They MAY come off alright, but if they're too corrosive it won't be pretty. If you want to play, and want advice on removing spots on nickel, send me a pm.

Jeff - I'm a big fan of originality, which your 12-D has. It'd be a shame to dip that away just to get it to cross. As FTB stated, the luster will make or break. Hopefully there's enough luster as is to make enhancement (ugh) an unnecessary option. Good looking, original '14 dime BTW.

Mark - That 10-D is a tough date in 58, but it's already seen the dip jar more than once. I'd advise leaving it in the ATS holder.

Mike - I don't have any V nickels (yet), but your 90 and 93 are what I would want. Thanks for the compliment on the 02-O, I do need to get a couple out to see if they qualify for the CAC sticker.

Well I did have to pay a whopping $50 for the '97 dime. The seller listing photos made the coin look horrible; nobody but me bid on it.

Well I did it.

I took Miss Liberty '12 D out of her holder and sent her to the Beauty Parlor for a makeover before the big Beauty Pageant in Long Beach.

I think they did a pretty nice job of cleaning her up:

It's absolutely amazing what one can accomplish with a Brillo Pad.

Mike- I'm here for knowledge. I do not take 1 of yalls knowledge over the others. You and Vern- are 2 of the most well informed collectors of barber coinage in the country. I agree that the coin was dipped and not properly rinsed. But with the pictures provided I do not fault you in saying it needed a dip. I appreciate both of your advice ANYTIME I can get it

Mark-

The coin has obviously been dipped; likely to remove toning that the submitter thought was unsightly. I don't see signs that it wasn't rinsed properly, but over the next 5 years my guess is the original toning will begin to return. Who knows what the coin will turn into; I've seen it go both ways.

I see it as a very nice coin; others might see it as a monster. I wouldn't be embarrassed to own it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it either. If you can get your $$ out of it sell it. If not, I would crack it out and let it tone a bit. Good luck!

Another nice looking Quarter from Milo's set.

I recently swapped a few graded Barber Halves (spares) with a friend for graded Barber Dimes and Quarters. Here's one that I picked up, a AU 55 1905 Quarter:

Just enough toning around the perimeter to keep it interesting. I think it's an honest 55.

I have a "thing" for 1909-S coins - maybe when I was a Kid,
looking for Lincoln cents with 1909-S's....which I never found.

Nice 09-S Milo. Very nice.

Paesan.... It's time for another sit and compare session - this time,
chez GinjaMax. Let me know what works for you. I only hope you
like big dogs - mine are super sweet - but are 95 lbs each.

Your Quarter set is really humming along !!

Mark.... There comes a time that you need to go with your gut
feelings before you decide if you're keeping a Newp or selling it.
When you're thinking about buying a Newp, think about selling it
at the same time. How easy would it be to unload the coin... Who'll
buy it ? Is the coin solid for the grade - is there any upside potential ?
You need to be the Devil's Advocate - and as much as it pains me to say
this - and break one of Don Willis' commandments - I am not trashing
ATS, I am just advising you to not look too throughly at coins in their
plastic. You're 100% safer to consider PCGS coins - and as I learned
a lesson from Don years ago, if you want a coin in a PCGS holder, then
buy the coin in a Pcgs holder. I still buy NGC coins - but they have to be
a cut above the rest. No matter how hard I try, my cross overs still fall
a grade short.

It's been awhile since I've been here (other $$$ activities) and the market seems to be lackluster with a lot of junk "floating" about. A few days ago I mentioned to Mike H. that having eight grades within AU was lol for me. We are now participating in one person's (the TPG grader) "eye of the needle". I do hope that every collector that spends a decent dollar has sharp eyes and understands what eye appeal means. ...Much dunked junk!

I look forward to a more orderly and consistent collectors market in the future. For today I've "dug out" an early favorite O.

On the other hand, I've had about 80% of my NGC crossover submissions in the "pronged" holders cross at the same grade. About 10% dropped one grade and 10% upgraded with PCGS. I once submitted a NGC VF 20 1904 S Half to PCGS; it came back as a PCGS 30!

I believe the two have been grading very competitively over the last few years. They do have slightly different grading standards, but for most coins I find they agree. Perhaps it's just my dumb luck that makes me believe this.

Jeff - I agree with MFH regarding your quarter set as it is really humming along.

Vern - I just think your raw coins are terrific as they are so well matched.

Craig - VERY nice 93-O and 05-S, but your 96-S takes the cake!! I need to have a napkin close by when I look at that coin. Although you may not see me, I'm standing right in line behind MFH on that one screaming "NO DUNKED JUNK!! NO DUNKED JUNK!!"
