I chased this coin the last time it sold a few years back. I was under bidder by a paltry $50.
My bid was still the same as my loosing bid back then, but with the change in the Buyers Fees, I ended up paying the same as the coin originally sold for.
Yes, I know I paid twice what any other nice 63 would sell for.

1871-cc 25c PCGS F15. Paid over PCGS price guide for it after not seeing a nice one I could afford in 7 years of searching. The 1871-cc 25c is the toughest Seated quarter date besides 1873-CC No Arrows, not the 1870-cc, IMHO.
Can't believe I'm posting to this thread for the 3rd time since it started.
I suspect that by the time it's all said and done, I didn't pay too much.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
If that Merc is NT than a lot of the coins that people on these boards poo poo as being AT are probably NT also. If that coin was in a non PCGS holder everyone would be disparaging it. I am not calling it either just commenting.
+1
Well....I know my opinion doesn't carry much weight; but imho, the '39D Merc has "coin doctor" written all over it. I'm judging the coin, not the slab and/or sticker.
I'm the Proud recipient of a genuine "you suck" award dated 1/24/05. I was accepted into the "Circle of Trust" on 3/9/09.
The picture of 1939 d was taken quite some time ago and perhaps I didn't do the best job. CAC however thought it was real so perhaps its just the picture. I love the coin but if it turns out to be AT then so be it. On another note the previous owner of the 1980 s Proof Half didn't know whether it would grade or not but sent it in anyways. In either case it is now in the holder and its pretty cool IMO.
I picked up my replacement V.D.B. for my U.S. Major Type Set. I have had Red and Red Brown V.D.B.'s before, even had the DDO's, but this one spoke to me;

Never seen a Booker T. Washington like that before. Really something. Thanks for posting!
Also, would just like to say that it's nice to see so many posts in this thread after years of reading "thou shalt not overpay" threads. Of course I try to avoid overpaying whenever I can, but after the deal is done (most of the time) one can't help but wonder if a better deal could've been had. Or maybe that's just me.
As Monty Python said, "And now, for something completely different..."
You can overpay for cheap, low-end coins, too!
I try to never pay too much for a coin, but sometimes I still do, of course.
And not all of them are high-end lovelies, or choice for the grade.
Case in point: after much haggling down from the seller's original (and quite ridiculous) $59.95 asking price, I ended up paying $29.75 for this common date, well-worn Peace dollar with graffiti on it.
Why, you ask? Well, for starters, Peace dollars are a slightly less common host for love token/hobo carving/engraved pieces, though certainly not unheard of. (One does see WW2 pieces done with punches.)
I just wanted a Peace dollar for my "Oddball" set, and though the engraving here is not particularly intricate or beautiful, I thought the "Leroy to Leroy" message was fun. Obviously given from one Leroy to another, but it's funny to imagine someone named Leroy engraving a love token to himself.
This seller has some insane notions of pricing (see exhibits #1, #2, #3, or any of dozens of other examples of lunacy), but he does have some nice stuff in the love token category and will bargain... to a point. He will squeeze every last cent out of the deal.
The negotiations on this coin were hilarious, and a little bizarre. From the crack-pipe-crazy asking price of $59.95 I initially offered $19.65, I think, and we ended up haggling through at least three cycles of counteroffers to and fro. At one point he told me how much I'd be saving off the BIN. (Yeah, right- if you'd set the BIN at a million dollars, I'd have been "saving" even more.) I told him there was no way I would go over $30 on this (and that's too much). My last offer was $29.65 and the guy countered $29.75... he literally wanted to milk that one last dime out of the deal! ROFL! So I gave him his dime, and for $29.75 (with free shipping) this became mine. But at least the guy WILL haggle. And I've gotten some other stuff from him I'm happy with (though never cheaply).
So... yeah. Almost certainly paid too much for this. But I don't care.

Great 1914 MPL. Was almost sure that it is now mine........
But after closer inspection it is not. 1914 was a good toning year for MPL's obviously.

Well, at least it appeared to be too much at the time. In hindsight, not so much.

Love this one. I don't even mind the old square nail damage on it. Adds to it's history.
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

here's one......completely prooflike and gorgeous, IMO of course!!!
Paid quite a bit for her but she's sooooo worth it!! Completely prooflike on both sides.
Did it upgrade? Nice coin!
