Some would say that I paid too much for this 1887-S 10C. What they did not see was the MPD in the Shield, indicating F-119 Rarity: R4+ Obverse: 1 Digit in Shield, High Date, Downward Slope. Reverse: Medium S
This coin the late Bruce Scher and I came to do battle over at the Mandalay Bay Rarities Sale in Las Vegas in 2004. I deferred, but he later sold it to me with the promise that I'd split with him any profit ultimately earned if I ever sold it. Sadly, Bruce has passed on, and I'm more than certain it'd never sell for what Bruce, and then I, paid for it. But I haven't wanted to sell!
I finally decided to post to this thread. These are the only two coins in my entire set that I feel that I really overpaid for. I paid nearly double sheet for both, which seemed crazy at the time. But seeing what's out there today; I don't really regret it. So, if that is the case; I guess that I'm not doing too badly. I think that both are gem quality and the strikes and luster are far above average. These coins have to be seen in hand to be fully appreciated. Pix don't do them justice.

This one had a rarity premium, an eye appeal premium, a green bean premium, and a dealer premium, so combine all 4 and I am in deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

Wow. Just randomly ran across your coin on NumisMaster and immediately recognized the photo. Nice piece by George Washington “Bo” Hughes. The auction itself sounds like it was exciting too:
Numismatic News:
With a winning bid of $22,000 plus a 10 percent buyer’s fee, a Bearded Man/Boxcar hobo nickel done by George Washington “Bo” Hughes dominated the 21st mail and floor bid auction conducted Jan. 12 during a meeting of the Original Hobo Nickel Society, Inc., at the Florida United Numismatists convention in Orlando.
Waaaaaaaaaaay overpaid for this coin but that's really what it looks like. The photos are totally untouched. That's not even the best angle. PCGS MS66. Looks irradiated.

If that Merc is NT than a lot of the coins that people on these boards poo poo as being AT are probably NT also. If that coin was in a non PCGS holder everyone would be disparaging it. I am not calling it either just commenting.
I'd lay good money on that Merc being out of an original Mint Set.

But this one fell into the category of, "When am I going to find another one looking very nice in this grade range?...And CAC'ed to boot?"
I still watched if for a month in the dealer inventory, half hoping it would sell to someone else, and put me out of my misery....half hoping it would still be there every time I looked.

It's a cool coin. I sometimes take it to shows I set up at and collectors of the genre always buy to visit it.

But this one fell into the category of, "When am I going to find another one looking very nice in this grade range?...And CAC'ed to boot?"

I probably paid too much for this dime,
But I'd wanted one of the type for over 35 years, and figured it was finally time to just get an entry level example.
