I am in .. 5 min sellout ?
Impossible. It took them 7 minutes to sell 4K last year. At the same rate, we're possibly looking at 17 minutes.
One thing that could be a roadblock, are the remaining two gold centennial coins, both more expensive than the gold merc, and more desirable to many. For many it'll be one or the other. This is an expensive year for special releases, with not only the two centennial gold, but the 30th anniversary SAE proof and probably uncirc, as well as the silver medal that was supposed to be released last year based on the 2015 24k UHR design. (It will be struck on an ASE blank. Apparently, they'll be pressed at both SF and WP as different releases.)
The 2015 APE is also the sister coin to the 2015, and if you don't have the 2015, it may be less desirable.
I do expect huge initial demand, flippers will be into this, but if you're online at Noon, I can't see getting getting shut out.
I'm still planning to add a couple to my collection even though I don't like the last minute design modifications. I don't see a 1 hour sellout, but you never really know for sure.
Q: Are You Printing Money? Bernanke: Not Literally
Won't even b close to key (2015 mintage 4000). I'd b surprised if it sells out at all unless simple bullion demand is extremely high given Brexit and the market. Still, most straight bullion buyers think good and silver not plat. Will b interesting. With the market down so sharply and people feeling poorer (like me) wonder if this will decrease sales to collectors.
Originally posted by: COCollector If I just want platinum buillion, right now I can buy a BU 1 oz APE (random year) for $1240 on Apmex. Or a BU Aussie Platypus for $1075.
Whereas, the 2016 APE will probably sell for $1350. Plus shipping.
So why should I buy the 2016? "Because I have the 2015" is beginning to feel like a weak numismatic reason -- especially given the 2016's 10K mintage.
All that said, I bet the 2016 sell-out takes only 45 minutes.
'Cause it's a nice looking coin.
That design will only be on one coin, the 2016 APE. (Same can be said of the 2015, but it's a arguably weaker design.) The 2017 will revert back to 1997 design.

Excellent points.
Also, I believe it's the USMint's only platinum coin this year.
Confusing Issue: Historically, platinum is more expensive than gold. But not now. So maybe it's a good time to buy platinum. Or sell gold. Or both.

Looks like one dealer already offering $100 profit per coin, plus every fifth coin $250 - so it works out to $650 on five coins....also looks like they pay shipping.
so if you have 4 friends/family, you can either get the $650 profit, or on the fifth coin they will pay you $400 for the first four and upgrade your fifth (trade) for a PCGS PR70FS. interesting deal - considering the stated max mintage is 10,000. they sent emails yesterday and today. whats up here?

Very bad deal at $100.
Show me where else you can make $100 in 15 minutes. I think the prices will be higher too.
Platinum up big today, hope this doesn't increase price e
If the mint follows their pricing grid it can't unless Pt closes at $1090 today. The price is based on the average of the last 5 closes and there hasn't been a close over $990 in the last week with the average ~ $975.

10,000 mintage / $1350 asking price from US Mint, add in grading / shipping costs, flip % profit probably ten - twelve percent out the gate, decreases from there, better flip this one early, MHO

Yep, probably $1600 ish to break even.
70 FS shouldn't be an issue, it's the 69's that mess you up.

A quick sell out will boost price even more .. don't fret... don't sell cheap
I'm stuck trying to order from work. I've not had much luck w hot issues at work. Still hoping I'll b O.K. U guys really think this will sell out quickly, much less at all, w the high mintage at over $1300? This design is fantastic though so demand may b high. Still, I'b very surprised by a fast sell out.

17 months ago this one melted at nearly $1300. The relatively low price of Pt this year makes it look better.
