Does the "currently unavailable" wording mean "Sold Out"? I recall a recent sell out where the Mint used the words "Sold Out". Is this the new way the Mint shows a sell out?

I think that gives the Mint leeway when coins are returned or there are CC shenanigans.
They never declare a sellout right away.
Usually takes several weeks before they declare a sellout if I recall.

The mint doesn't use the words, "Sold Out" until the product is indeed sold out. That means all credit card issues, returns, etc, have moved through the process, and they no longer have any in (or potentially in) inventory.
So "currently unavailable" on this issue means they've taken 10K+ orders. Chances are they'll piece-meal the remaining returns and previously reserved coins at some point.
But for all intents and purposes, this issue's been sold out.
So, if I made a gentleman's "bet" with someone (for who pays for our next dinner) that the coin would (or would not) be sold out in 1 hour - who won the "bet"? The guy who bet it would be sold out in an hour or the guy who bet it would not be sold out by 1:00 p.m. EST??

I would say sold out occured at "currently unavailable" unless the mint offers any for sale in the future (before actually posting Sold Out) I believe the mint indicated "currently unavailable" in 2015 at 4000 orders, then posted Sold Out" at approx 3818 audited sales.
I just got a call from someone who has about 140 coins available right now that wants $150 over cost for the lot (you might be able to twist his arm for a little less). I can't use them as I bought a ton of coins from the board (thank you all again). If anyone wants them, send me a PM and I can try to get you guys together.

Another reason the sellout happened so fast. Many flippers buying up as many as they could in hopes of a profit. Only problem is will there be enough of a demand to resell them all or will many get burned?

First in and the last may not be able to get out. Prices will shoot up then fall quickly. Way less than half will go to people wanting a companion for last years coin. The rest will be held in the hopes melt goes above $1,300.

Glad I was busy at the time they were on sale. I don't feel so bad about not buying one. You guys get me so hyped up that I sometimes can't refuse. You have led me to some gems, though.

Not sold at Mint sales counter. I called and confirmed.

Wait until the mint reports sales on Monday. Anything above 9800 is a sell out (assuming cancellations.)

(BTW, I think you lost. By 4 minutes.)
Lots of declined, wrong CCs 1st time around ..are then offered again early in mornings
You should have made the bet for when they became unavailable. Pretty sure that's what you guys were betting on. "Sold out" might not show up for a long time and in that event the guy that said longer than an hour would win. To be clear say when the red box disappears.

Yep, I got the same result when I called the Mint sales counter. The lady was very nice, and she reported that did not get the gold Mercury either. I'm guessing that after the gold Kennedy mob fiasco at the Mint that they stopped selling them at the sales counters.

This sure boxes very well for the 2015. Should b a very solid key for a long time. It's also a great looking coin. I'll likely regret flipping the one I sold for $2000. At least I kept one and scored a 70.

Coins with a HH limit are not sold at the sales counters.
I don't think that anyone can pick up a the center.
Why would you cancel? You would almost certainly stand to gain money on resale. How did the fast sellout influence your decision to return it? It seems to suggest the opposite

Flips weren't working out as good as hoped. Plus, I'm an ancients guy, didn't want to get stuck with a modern I couldn't unload. Flips help fund my passion for old coins. Probably jumped the gun a bit, but I'm risk adverse.
Honestly, the flips are flopping right now. I just secured a sale for my 4 for $50 profit each. Yippie. Might have been better to hold off, but oh well.
I bought "way too many" of the 2016 coins already. Not because I thought the coin was a "future star" (far from it), but simply because 1997-date Proof Platinum is something I maintain a very strong inventory of and I know the coins will "go away" at some point.
But, seriously, the PCGS-PR70DCAM FS coins are already priced out there at $1,850 - $1,950 one Day 1! And, I will likely sell the 70FS coins as cheap as any of my competition. So, you do the math, including the $100/coin premium I paid most board members for the coins all week. There is already "little left on the bones" in this deal for nearly anyone that "plays" at these levels. The coins are 3 hours old and quite frankly, the only thing that "bails out" most folks (from what I see) is a huge 70 grade through rate. If it is 10% or 15% like it was in 2012, the losses may likely pile up quickly. Hopefully, the coins are super high end and more than half grade out 70. We'll see. A tough way to make an easy living!
Just my two cents.

Edited to add ... (3) more cancelled coins by another board member now that the buys are under $100 per coin.

Pennmetals Group was offering $100 over cost plus shipping to them.
My bad, it wasn't Pinehurst.
From my email.
We can pay you $100 per coin over the U.S. Mint price, or $1,450.00 total per coin.
Simply purchase the coin from the U.S. Mint here and ship them to Penn Metals (at our expense) once it arrives. As soon as we receive the coin, we will immediately send you a check. We’ll cover the cost of shipping and insurance!
Here's all you need to do:
Buy the coins from the U.S. Mint. You can order one (1) coin per household starting at 12PM EST tomorrow, 6/30. Click here to visit the U.S. Mint website.
Once your order has been placed, email your U.S. Mint order number to Support@PennMetals.com. This locks in your $100/coin profit.
We will send you a prepaid USPS shipping label for your coin(s). This label covers the cost of shipping and insurance.
Upon receipt of the coin we will send you payment immediately.
Truth be told, there aren't 10,000 Proof Plat collectors out there. There will be enough of this issue to go around. I still wish they hadn't messed with the design.

Or, you do what some of the classic guys do with their money .... they take their $150,000, buy a single coin and flip it to a collector for a modest 10% profit and make $15,000 in no time! I hear all the time that is the minimum return expected by many dealers on handling a coin

Yes, it's tough to say a coin is sold out if it then sells a week later. LOL
So, it's too early to actually tell if there was a "sell out" before 1:00 p.m.??

I knew it would happen.
Kind of seems on sale.
I like the design, so if i get at least one that grades a 70, i'd be happy.
That would be a 70 for about $1450.
As for flipping, it's pretty hard to do. I used to do it all the time, but as you can read, some dealers have a hunderd+ of these.
They can make money on volume.
You clear $100 on 100 coins, you just made $10,000.
There's just not enough $$ left for me to go through all the work for a couple hundred bucks.
But i love the hunt, so i'll get my four and see what i have and take it from there, with no expectation of making a killing.
