Jackson to be removed from the $20 - to be replaced by Harriet Tubman

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
Announcement to be made this week

There will be a change to the back of the $10 as well.

I always thought that Jackson would be rolling over in his grave had he known his image was on a Federal Reserve note anyway.

I'm very glad to see they will be putting a woman on a U.S. note, and especially the $20 note, however, it's too bad that, due to bureaucracy, it won't even happen until 2030 at the earliest!

Id rather remove both, but if I had to choose to keep only one, I'd keep Jackson.
But as previously mentioned, Jackson definitely wouldn't like the idea of central bank notes anyway, let alone being depicted on one.

I'm not a fan of Hamilton's hand in the establishment of a privately-run central bank for the United States, which Jefferson and Madison both objected to and Jackson finally killed off.

That Hamilton is staying and Jackson is going is just another illustration of who really pulls the (purse) strings.

Maybe this will signal a change in some of our current circulating coinage as well. Love to see changes there too!

That is such BS. They should replace Jackson in 2020 at the latest for the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. They can replace the portrait with the same current security features and upgrade to the new technology later.

If this were a Republican Sec. of Treasury, the press would be burning him at the stake now.

I agree Rick. But which one?

The contemporary one which could be represented by any number of different races?

    The classic one?

The reality of this situation is that who or what appears on circulating coins and currency should not be up for "public" opinion. Just do it because its not like folks are going to "refuse" a $10 bill because of who was pictured on it. (Leave the Hitler comments out since it's a ridiculous comparison/response) Fives, Tens and Twenties are the very backbone of the public currency.

Maybe a "person" isn't the correct choice. Maybe they should have gone with renderings of Bald Eagles? Or perhaps Federal Buildings? Independence Hall? The Liberty Bell? The USS Constitution?

JFC. First it was $20 Jackson, then it was $10 Hamilton, now it's back to Jackson.

Sooner or later, Elon Musk portrait on the obverse with a Tesla in 3/4 portrait view on the reverse, maybe landing first stage rocket on a barge will be a possible reverse celebrated as an accomplishment.

May be political appeasement, but he did some pretty heinous things and that remains a fact. Dark times in our country's history. Of course, I never see Roosevelt getting attacked for relocation camps for Japanese Americans during WW2.

Lots of dark times and bad decisions have followed lots of presidents.

Jackson has long been an overrated president in large part because of the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., The Age of Jackson. In reality Jackson's "bank war" with The Bank of the United States was one of the major contributing factors that led to the Panic of 1837, which was a major economic depression. Jackson deserves high marks for his opposition to the nullification movement, which was one of the first crises that would lead to the Civil War. He gets much lower marks for his treatment of the American Indian before and while he was president, and his economic policies.

I fully support the removal of Jackson from the $20 bill and the retention of Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill. Hamilton was founder of much of our modern monetary system, and his ideas concerning the need for a central bank were spot on. There is a strong need for a modern economic system to have a central bank regardless of what some far right wing people believe. The Gold Standard is an archaic and simple minded theory. In truth it didn't work that well in the simpler times when it was tried.

One can certainly object to the policies that the modern Federal Reserve System has enacted over the years, but the need for a central bank is obvious to anyone who has seriously studied economic history.

As long as it's money, it will spend in the market. Largely unnoticed, we used to have beautiful imagery on larger notes. Who noticed ? Collectors, not bankers !
