I have always loved this set, but the difficulty of the '71's and the size of the 72's seemed to pull collectors to the early 70's.

I was 10 when this set came out and it is the one I remember collecting first.

If any has some 1977 PSA 9's (NQ) for sale, PM me.

My latest sub just popped....plenty of 8s, some 9s, and two Gem Mint 10s. I finally got my 77 Carew AS in 10 and also had a Willie Randolph grade the same. I will post scans once I get them back. I am now at 14/18 on the 77 AS cards. Fidrych, Munson, Garvey, and Concepcion are left. I figure it will only take me about another 10 years to get them. LOL image

    Great cards Bobby!

That Carew looks both wide and tall.

  • Is the Carew "big"? the reason i ask is because its in a baggie

It does seem wide, but still a gorgeous card.
That's one of my big pet peeves with PSA. A larger card gets slabbed in a baggie. While a slightly smaller one gets returned "min size req". Now if PSA can tell when a card is trimmed, why can't they determine when a card is just cut short? There is a difference and when I've asked, I've been just told "We don't slab cards that don't meet min size"image

I don't think it is as I've measured it against others. But, it is a beautiful card all the same. Thanks for the kind words.

Anyone still working on this one? I have been thinking about giving it a whirl ... seems like most cards can be had in a good grade for a fairly low dollar amount, and its always been one of my favorite non-50/60's sets.
Looking for PSA HOF autos, PSA Vintage Red Sox and Pedro Martinez

I am still searching for 4 more 77 AS cards in 10. I will get there and it is my main focus. However, over the years I have accumulated many rock-solid non-AS 77s. I think I may start getting those graded. I have over 400 cards that I consider mint-gem mint. I've purchased many wax packs and eight vending boxes in my day. Two non all-star cards I submitted on a whim and one came back a 10 (Willie Randolph) and one a 9 (Jim Palmer). I think I'll start building the set. Heck, it will keep me occupied anyway. I know there are some really tough cards (e.g. Luebber, Ryan) but it will be fun all the same. I will keep you all posted. BTW - I am not on the registry but may join one day soon. Not to compete, but to keep track of my own progress. Bobby

No, it was actually only 22. I forgot how many I sent in but knew it was north of 20. Most of these came from vending.
  • Gotcha, nice cards. A lot of nostalgia for me, I may start up this set again.

Same for me. It's a great set and good luck if you decide to go for it.
  • Thanks...I was an early bird. I got this set to 35% back when everyone said "who in their right mind would grade a whole 70s set". Then Apostle came in and blew me away obviously circa 2003/2004 timeframe. I retired it due to financial reasons, but 10 years later, I might have room for it now...especially as the common cards are much cheaper. I remember when the set barely had any 9s or 10s at all. I should go dig for an old post, LOL. Lucky thing is I kept a good chunk of nice raw that will frequently 9 and give me some tens I believe.
  • Anyone remember this day?? I started adding my set shortly after this.

    Thursday, December 20, 2001 9:03 PM

    Hi Everyone,

There are several matters at hand.

First, the following new set composites have been added: 1934-36 Diamond Stars baseball, 1970 Topps baseball, 1977 Topps baseball, 1927 Churchman's Famous golf, 1931 Churchman's Small gold, 1931 Churchman's Large golf, and 1959 Topps football.

Secondly, the request list is current and up-to-date. Please note that several of us in the internet operations division will be taking a few days off during the holidays to spend with our families - one of them being me. That means that no new sets will be added until after the first of the year. As always, I appreciate your patience and understanding. I know that the registry has become a very "happening" place and all of you who have sets not listed would like to see the composites for those sets up RIGHT NOW. We will do our best in the new year to get sets up as quickly as we can.

Third, there have been continuing database problems with certification numbers showing up in the cert table but not in the registry. One of our programmers is devoted full time to not only resolving that problem, but some of the other problems you may have been experiencing with speed and timeouts. He expects to be done with this work in about 30 days. At the end of that time, we are hoping that many of these problems will go away.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who are participating in the set registry program. Your enthusiasm is what is making the registry grow. Your feedback and incredibly great ideas are not taken lightly and are always given serious consideration. And, for those who have helped me and contributed your valuable time in the past few weeks, thank you so much!

I wish everyone very a very safe and happy holiday.

  • Hey all,
Just took a stroll down memory lane image This set was one of my top priorities 5 years ago. This is still one of my favorite sets. I have a couple observations.

    1. This remains one of the most under-rated sets in regards to difficulty. In the next 5 years we will see the pops of 1977s separate itself even further from other easier sets to build.
    2. It was funny to peruse back through the discussion from 4-5 years ago when one could go on BBCE at any time and buy as many vending boxes as you wanted. I have a stash but it is not huge and it would not put any substantial dent in the pop report given the low conversion rate.
    3. What happened to CZAR? I noticed he blanked all his old posts. I enjoyed his march toward 100% in 10s and actually steered clear of a few 1 of 1s that came up. Is this still an active pursuit?
    4. Kurt, best wishes on your pursuit, but I will warn you that this set requires a HUGE amount of patience. After 7 years I am finally down to needing one 9! Tommy John gets that distinction.

I was wondering about CZAR too. He has/had an awesome run of 77s. And, I agree with you regarding patience. I am simply trying to obtain all 18 AS cards in 10. I've been working on that for 10 years now. LOL

  • << <i>That step back in history is awesome, as is the personal touch.

As for rebuilding your set I'd say now is the time to do it. As unopened has dried up I think the high end slabbed cards will start too as well ... and things will come full circle. >>

I am starting to think so, I believe I may send some to Newport Beach and see what happens from there. I can check my 128s while I am at it.

As for underrated, I agree totally. It isn't going to get any easier from here with unopened stuff drying up from what I am seeing/reading. I have nothing unopened left, but I do have a fair amount that I did open that I never submitted, so it's a start, haha. I can't make a complete set anymore as my stars and rookies were submitted and/or sold. I can't remember but when I took this up half the set wasn't around in 9 at the time, funny how that has changed. Quite a few of the stars have climbed. I want to take some time to dig up some more old prices and see how that has changed out of curiosity.

At the end of the day I can't imagine another push like we have seen in terms of population growth, but I could be wrong....would love thoughts on that. I had printed pop reports somewhere, but I have moved twice and I am not sure where those went now. In late 2001 as an example, I found a post from Marc (mikeschmidt)...6,000 submissions and only (1) 10. We are at 63,756 now with 3,150 10s. I have to admit I don't think many including me felt there would be 3,000s 10s out there back then...it just seemed impossible, breaking vending where 80% of the cards were miscut and rough, haha.

How much unopened do people think is left out there? Anyone know of some big collections unopened?

  • The Czar's set is the one that is like 85% complete and all 10s! It is an amazing set.
I have a spreadsheet with all the information you would need for the 1977s including the pops of 9s for the past 5 years. The VCP prices etc...I am always willing to send this type stuff to fellow collectors.

I'm not on the registry. I asked for a 77 AS set but it never was approved. I do have my all-star cards displayedin the Collector's showcase under miscellaneous. It is called BB4's 77 All-star Parade. I have photos of all my 10s. Well, i have multiple 10s for a few players, but I just posted one pic of each.

LOL >>

Is the CZAR set on the registry? Which set is your set? (Mintmoondog's was easy to find, haha) >>

Wow man. My best Brett was a 9 and it didn't hold candle to that one. My favorite personally is the Grich, that is one of those "11" cards...thanks sincerely for sharing these. >>

Thanks my friend. Go for it! It's a great set.

OK, I have 9 Garvey 9s that i am seriously thinking about sending in for review in hopes of garnering the first 10. Thoughts? All opinions and advice is appreciated. Bobby

edited as I got my actual number mixed up. I have 14 Roses. Ha.
  • Kurt in response to your question about population explosion. I believe that is a definite and emphatic no! I have 4 years worth of pops and I don't see that happening. Also, there is almost no unopened 77 out there. 70-90% of the wax out there is resealed (just a personal guess), and you don't see anything beyond packs for sale from BBCE for the past 3 years. Also, the card stock is so poor on these cards it is hard to expect beyond 8s from any raw sets.
As a disclaimer. I do have 2 unopened vending cases I have been sitting on for years. I may crack one at some point, but just don't have the time. I also have around 20 vending boxes from BBCE I bought around 2007-2009. Knowing how poor these cards are out of vending (90% with totally poor centering) I am not sure that even this stash would affect pop reports.

I have to think this set is quite the sleeper now for valuation over the next decade then, especially if say 25 more people on earth jump into it over that time. I am still surprised how we got to 3,000+ 10s haha. What was the level in say 2007, would be interesting to see the growth since then. How about in the past 2 years?

I wonder what happend to Phil? He was a little high strung but he was fun to have around. He has a a lot of
awesome cards in his set including the one and only Blyleven 10..

John how are you, it's been a long time! I didn't keep in contact with Phil, I would be curious what his set is like now. Downgoesfrazier was a memorable handle.

As far as the unopened, it certainly seems to be down to the ending from what you guys are saying. The first time around 8/9 was a strong set as most including myself didn't think with (1) 10 in 6,000 that even 25% a set would happen in that grade...ever. So to see 3,000+ 10s is amazing to me. Henry's set seems all the more remarkable to me regardless though as I know how tough these are. In those days I hit 9s, but I never got a 10 on any submission of 77s obviously. I have hit 70s 10s otherwise, just never this set, haha....frustrating so it makes me ponder if I should "stay raw" and complete that instead because I might be in majority 8 mode. What do you guys think the valuation of a largely 8 set might do over the next ten years?

The Garvey's I would send in the strongest one's yes. 14 Rose did I read? All 10s? Wow...again remarkable.

    Not much.

I think there are exponentially as many 8s out there as there are 9s. So as the unopened is gone people will start subbing more random raw that will most likely me sub mint quality.

I'd shoot for at least all 9s if you have the chance as right now they seem to be still affordable with only a couple on ebay over $100.

I can speak from experience with my '79 set that pretty much no one is popping many 9s or hardly any 10s anymore. At only 4.9% subs for '77 being 10s, it definitely is a tough set ... '79 is tough and sits at about 6.5%. I'd save getting 8s just to fill holes if I were you and upgrade to 9s ASAP. >>

See I think that is the rub in my decision which I slept on...the availability of 9s+. The 9s out there can make what? 25% of a set? 50% of a set? (honestly haven't done the math).

So then it turns to submitting my own or waiting for a registry leader to sell to finish...or as we agree I use 8s to fill it out. I have plenty of cards that will "8+" to help me, but it's not easy to churn out 9s+ as we all know...making me think I should stay raw and buy back the missing pieces (stars and rookies) to finish out what I have. If the population growth stays "slow" from your viewpoint.... I could always submit them later if the economics make more sense to risk 8s... The pop has exploded beyond my wildest dreams from my viewpoint since I was into this heavy. I love this set and would love to own it entirely graded, but I still do want to be reasonable in time and money.

MintMoondog...I would like to take a look at the pop and pricing info you have to help me decide if another run is even really realistic for me.

Is your PM working or can you shoot me one?

I wish. No, I have 14 Roses in 9, only one 10. image That sounds good. My only thought around sending them all in is that maybe ONE will really standout from the others to the grader and he will bump it..... I have a couple of the Garveys that look absolutely flawless to me, lacking the common ink line running from the left and the blue print dot.
