<< <i>I wonder what happend to Phil? He was a little high strung but he was fun to have around. He has a a lot of awesome cards in his set including the one and only Blyleven 10.. >>
John how are you, it's been a long time! I didn't keep in contact with Phil, I would be curious what his set is like now. Downgoesfrazier was a memorable handle.
As far as the unopened, it certainly seems to be down to the ending from what you guys are saying. The first time around 8/9 was a strong set as most including myself didn't think with (1) 10 in 6,000 that even 25% a set would happen in that grade...ever. So to see 3,000+ 10s is amazing to me. Henry's set seems all the more remarkable to me regardless though as I know how tough these are. In those days I hit 9s, but I never got a 10 on any submission of 77s obviously. I have hit 70s 10s otherwise, just never this set, haha....frustrating so it makes me ponder if I should "stay raw" and complete that instead because I might be in majority 8 mode. What do you guys think the valuation of a largely 8 set might do over the next ten years?
The Garvey's I would send in the strongest one's yes. 14 Rose did I read? All 10s? Wow...again remarkable. >>
I wish. No, I have 14 Roses in 9, only one 10. That sounds good. My only thought around sending them all in is that maybe ONE will really standout from the others to the grader and he will bump it..... I have a couple of the Garveys that look absolutely flawless to me, lacking the common ink line running from the left and the blue print dot. >>
14 9s is still awesome man, haha. I have to think with the Garveys...if it's me a no brainer I send them. Try to get two 10s so you can sell or trade one, haha.
Here are the number of 9s: 2009 = 17558 2011 = 21023 2012 =22649 2013 = 24211 As stated, you can pick up a substantial percent of the set in 9 at a reasonable cost (probably 50-70%). After that it becomes increasingly challenging. Therefore, you need to do homework and learn which cards are htf. there are 50-70 whose pops haven't budged since 2008.
Let me give you one example: 657 Mick Kelleher pop was 12 in 2009 in psa 9...today, still 12 (4 years not a single 9 graded!) VCP 2013 = 17.00 660 Willie Horton pop was 27 in 2009 in psa 9....today, 31 (only 4 graded in 4 years) VCP 2013 = 17.00 When these cards pop up, I would normally jump on them as a value buy...but the snipe better be appropriate because it is becoming harder to sneak by as more collectors enter. It is possible to find great deals still but they don't come around often because people are not grading these in high numbers. As an indicator, you do not even see 4SC offer large numbers of 77s anymore, and they haven't for 3-4 years (I know this because I have been a consistent buyer; searcher since 2006). Also, the main difference between 1977s and 1979s is that there are many more people building this set...look at the depth in the registry. My advice is to build consistently...the way it has worked for me for every year I have built (1970-79) is that I build slowly and then suddenly one or two people break their set and hola! I jump on the setbreak to fill large gaps. My 1970 set received a major bump this past winter in the Heritage auction and my 1971 was built on two major setbreaks about 3 years ago...between them it was one or two cards at a time. At the same time, I would build my raw set as a very long term hold for the day (maybe in 10 years) when it is lucrative to send in and sell 8s...that wont happen anytime soon IMO.

This is interesting. Do you have the Mick Kelleher stats overall? How many added above or below a 9 was there in the same stretch?
I think after careful thought, I will leave it as memories. Your feedback has been really a big help towards a decision. I am going to work on the raw set. If the situation changes, maybe I will enter the fray again another time. I wish all of you the best of luck with your sets, some amazing cards out there and thank you for sharing.

Totally understand. I'm lucky to have a focus on a select few cards. I'd go nuts looking for Luebber or Candelaria in high grade. Ha Stay in touch and good luck to you as well!
Kurt, I am fine thanks. I hope you stick around. Does anyone have a nicely centered nm mt or PSA 8 Munson? I use the 3 border rule on 77's, left right bottom, should be the same size or close to it.
Thanks guys! I think the thread has plenty of life and I will lurk here and there!
John I double checked, my Munson was a 9 when the pop was much smaller and it was sold 10 years ago for a lot less than they go for now, haha. If I have more, I would think they are not of 8 quality...probably due to centering, but I can take a look tomorrow maybe as that will be a card I also need to rebuild a raw set. I see this out there in case you missed it...but I am the same and the t/b centering could be better of course than that one.

From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo. ~WalterSobchak
I visited w frank last week. I won't go into the reasons he decided to sell his set, let's just say it wasn't as enjoyable as it once was. He knows he will be taking a loss but says its time to move on. That set certainly was one of the best around. I told him in years past to fill in his gaps with 9s, if he did he's have the #1 set by a mile. But he only wanted 10s I hope the auctions do well for him
The last 20% of any PSA set from any year in the 1970s is anything but enjoyable! LOL ...the one thing I have realized is that only the strong survive in the registry world. I agree that he should have filled the gaps with 9s - that would have been a great complete set. A perfect 10 1977 set is much harder than Hatch's 1978 IMO. I am glad that the sale is based on choice not need. Its too bad he gave up the chase - it was fun to watch.
<< <i>Nice card! No print flaws Matt is a PSA hound-dog...I don't know how you keep sniffing out great cards from the 70s. >>
An elderly couple in La Mirada, CA have been cleaning out their garage for over two years. I've been buying most of their stuff. Some has been average, some has been fantastic I'm still trying to pry a couple 75 mini sets from him. His wife told me those are the only ones he's not gonna let to
Quick question please for the collectors of this set (or those who've busted many packs from '77)... Do these cards vary in size right out of the pack? I have two cards from this set in the same grade, and one is slightly shorter t/b than the other. If I look closely (under magnification) at the edges, they all appear to have a slightly rough cut (although the top cut on both cards seems to be slightly smoother).
Thanks for any help.
cliff's notes: do 1977 Topps cards vary in size when pulled from a pack?
A weak 10 is right. I'd expect an 8 if submitting that card.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I am so p*ssed even looking at that card - what is going on? That card is visibly O/C and has a visible tilt! Ridiculous grade - I usually put in a bid on the Bird anytime I catch one but I passed on this with extreme prejudice. Edit: on the other hand, the Seaver and Dawson 10s look fantastic! Let's see where those end up
<< <i>Why the outrage? I believe 10s can have centering that is not perfect. >>
No outrage, just an observation of fact. Chipping on right edge and less than ideal registration are also factors that should keep that card in 8-9 range at best.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
What kind of heresy is this!?!?!? ...are you suggesting the omnipotent graders employed by PSA could potentially grade a card a 10 that is really an 8 and vice versa? You mean the very standards in which this organization is built are wanting of more precise controls/measures?? What kind of madman could possibly make this assertion?!?!!?
On a personal note, glad to see others are putting their observations in writing …perhaps one day enough of us will demand through the power of our money spent, that PSA take their grading accuracy to the next level.
