There are law enforcement options **even in situations like this maybe without paypal invoicing, a written actionable contract, etc.. I hope you pursue all necessary actions. Heck I will even hold Walmart's feet to the fire for sneakers that start falling apart in weeks. ** I wish the grading services and top numismatic companies offered free or pro bono assistance on rip-offs like this that can suck the joy out of the hobby and create undue stress. My town cops were able to issue a warrant on a scammer in WA state and he paid quickly. Keep the pressure up! Hunter can run but he can't hide!
Litigation isn't always cost effective.
That may be true and my brother berates me for spending too much time pursuing unjust people, but I consider it a civic duty, especially for those who can afford it because scammers usually leave a lot of ripped off people. The government will sometimes pursue bad actors, spending a dime to recover a dollar.
I hate to lump Cameron in with Hunter Smith (aka 'planonit').
Not to excuse what Cameron did, and certainly not to minimize the wrong done by 'planonit', but Cameron had his personal tribulations that caused, or contributed to, his doing wrong to the folks who thought better of him.
There are plenty of folks here who knew Cameron in his better days. His two last public acts were bad, but I ask the membership not to judge the totality of his life (i.e., 'he is a dirtbag') by his final two public acts. While I did not know Cameron well, I can honestly say that I knew him well enough to say that he is a mixed bag like a large number of us: good in many ways, and perhaps less than above reproach in some other ways.
The subject person (Hunter Smith) of this thread e-mailed me the following brief message in both Dec 2016 and Feb 2017 from e-mail address HUSmith@Indiana.edu
"I think I messaged before but I was curious if you were still adding to your Morgan set? Looking for Pl/DMPL by chance? Thanks"
I presumed he contacted me by trolling the PCGS Registry Set listings, and ignored his unsolicited inquiries. -- After reading others' experiences with HS in this thread, I'm glad that I did not reply.

You could have asked if he had certain choice rarities and asked to have them sent on approval and held them hostage until he made good with those he had scammed.

Not the right way to go about it, particularly if the person doing that had no personal business prior with the sender. That would then make that person a thief as well. While it sounds good, on the surface, as a way to stick up for a fellow member/collector, the old saying about "2 wrongs not making a right" comes into play....and would open that person up to charges as well.
I agree Bochiman, it was just a thought. The solution is to address scams quickly before it gets compounded. I have never heard of sellers making unsolicited offers in forums like this.
Odds are he is done grazing this fertile PCGS pasture and has cut bait and moved on.

Look at his profile. He was lurking here at 8:07 tonight.
He won't be able to suck anyone else in here. He is done. He doesn't have much incentive to pay anymore. It's not like anyone else will do business with him even if he does pay. His name is mud. That is my point

You mean commit a crime to intervene into something that doesn't affect you? I think that is very poor advice.

I wasn't really serious on that but having coins sent on approval or memo is as old a practice as the hills.
PCGS has been holding a coin I sent in last September, it went through "restoration" on their guarantee submission then another guarantee submission when cac said the coin was tooled, I stand to lose a lot of money on the coin due to their low valuation, I wouldn't call that a "crime" but it isn't right.

You are comparing apples and oranges. You consented to the restoration, and it was a bailment for your benefit. Holding someone's coin with the intention to deprive him or her of possession (without consent or legal authorization) in order to exert influence over someone or coerce him is different.

If he used the U.S. Postal system in any part of the rip off I would think he has a mail fraud issue to deal with. He seems like a guy that has gotten good about jerking people around and will until someone gets him indited on mail fraud. The Feds make up the rules as they want to and in this case I hope they can and do.
He is still owed approximately $300 and I'm still owed $1,055.
I'm sorry this is happening to the two of you. I'm still hoping this will pan out. Seven months out, there is no real chance this was an innocent misadventure as the subject of this thread claimed in my opinion.
I am getting a monthly payment from a deadbeat through a debt collection agency, 3/4 of the debtors money plus and initial skip trace is worth the trouble. I regard pursuing fraud a civic duty. An area gold buyer told me about being stiffed by a guy who palmed off a fake 09s vdb on him, I said he should do a small claims court action, not that hard and at least gets the fraud on record. Fraudsters were in the lowest circle of Dante's hell.
Hunter contacted me last week and stated he will be returning (yet again) this week and this will get cleared up immediately.
Of course 7 days have gone by and no positive result.
Stay tuned for an update next week:
If payment is not made by monday the 14th the prosecuting attorney of his district will be getting involved.
Coupled with all the other people online who have been scammed by hunter (see the 3 links in my original post) this should make for an interesting case

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Crocodile tears for the poor gold buyer. Most need to stay away from the court system themselves.
