Onlyone certified by either NGC or PCGS, therefore TP (NGC MS61). In his book Gold Coins of the Mexican Republic, Mr Richard Long describes this issue as "extremely rare coin". According to him, most of the known examples are VF-XF, with a few known high grade, and one Fine. Softly struck centres are mentioned. In his records he shows 8 sales registered between 1944 and 1991 of which several of the listings are for the same coin (an XF coin).
As you know, Cap and Rays minors can be very elusive. Here it is an AU50 TP for a one real from Guanajuato, 1829. The golden tones on the obverse contrast very nicely with the fully feathered eagle! And full Libertad on the cap. Now that I think about it perhaps the 50 is a bit strict. Anyway, enjoy.
In our beloved section “Coins you have never seen before (and likely you will never see again)” I present you this exceedingly rare 4 escudos from the Guanajuato mint dated 1856. This is the coin featured in Coinfacts Wiki. How rare you wonder? Well, according to Richard Long in his book on Mexican Republic gold, it is extremely rare (not even a sale chart is included with the issue!). In fact, this very coin, according to Long, is the only specimen offered for sale during the period 1994-2001 (Ponterio and Associates). Offered by Goldberg in 2014 (“Mexico. 4 Escudos, 1856-Go PF. Hand on book. Listed as Extremely Rare in the Richard Long book. Natural edge flaw. NGC graded VF-20.") and then by Stack’s Bowers (“This is a truly rare 4 Escudos from the Guanajuato mint. The 1856 date is missing from Gerber, Eliasberg, and Norweb collections. Small edge flaw at 3:00 noted”). And yes, you read correctly, this issue is missed in the Norweb, Eliasberg, and Gerber collections (but not Abuelo’s!). When people ask me if I like more conditional rarities or absolute rarities, this coin is my answer! Yes, it has a flan flaw, but when you are talking of these rarities, that is as good as it gets. It also is a top pop... ok, apparently the only one graded by NGC.
So you get an idea, 1856 is not even listed at the NGC price guide...
The last issue of the Knights of Malta was in 1798, thereafter a British possession. The 15 tari halfcrown is particularly difficult to obtain in good grade, the 30 tari (variety with dot under bust thought to have been struck under Napoleonic occupation) much less so.
Can't speak for the minors, but I know where some of the peso's went. At least some where accepted in China. Sorry this isn't a "top pop" coin but relevant to the conversation nonetheless.
Very flat strike around the peripheral obverse, or maybe struck through grease? Somewhat prooflike reverse.
Sheesh, I don’t play the top pop game but I happen to own a few, by pure coincidence. Some of them are not mine anymore, I like to renew a lot, but I paid for every single picture, let alone that most have been slabbed by me, and kept in the collection for years so I get bragging rights.
Crete , Greece, 1901, 50 lepta NGC MS65
And yet, I prefer my Pcgs ms63 of the same coin.
Ionian islands 30 lepta 1948 PCGS MS65
Ionian islands 30 lepta 1857 PCGS MS67
Switzerland 1910 half franc PCGS MS67+
Greece 2000, 100 drs VIP proof PCGS PR68DCAM, these were given by denomination in a ceremony that was attended by politicians, ex or current prime ministers, members of current or previous governments and such, and very few were given by piece, according to the importance of the receiver. This is the highest denomination, top pop of 3 only.
Time to go to bed, there are more, but I do not play this game. I prefer the cheaper and best looking coin instead. These were exceptions, but not the first one, the Crete 1901 50l, or the 1833 5drs NGC MS66 that I sold as well as a few others, including the Cyprus one, which was by far and away the nicest of its kind ex British Museum collection, but I sold the set to the finest collection of Cyprus coins in this planet, no kidding, for an astronomical amount back then.
And no, I do not regret it, I NEVER have seller’s remorse, that’s what pictures are for.
Something interesting thing about this coin. It was in a NGC holder for MS61. Someone contacted me wanted to buy this coin while it was in PCGS to cross, so I told him it was in PCGS to cross. He told me to let him know when it is back so he can buy it. When it came back as SP62 I told him that the coin is back but he said he can't buy it any more because NGC label it as late 18th Century but on PCGS label it as no date but Bergstrom-1910 variety.
Bidask you have some terrific coins. I have a quite fast connection, but it takes a bit to load up all these pics per page. Top pops or not, not a single coin in this thread doesn’t blow you away! Like abuelo’s for ex. 👍
Haven't gotten any PCGS top pops yet, but I got a couple over at NGC.

Single one in MS64 at PCGS and none higher...
@Abuelo Awesome CAR 8R. It's a shame PCGS didn't image it for CoinFacts.

Every one a treasure! I love the 1838 South Peru 8R, but that 1733-MX 4R has incredible originality for its rarity.

This one just came back from grading as a pop 1/0. It might not be top pop forever, but it is for now.

1930 London. High end for grade. Absolutely the least bag marked MS T1$ of any date I have ever seen.
I doubt it ever made it to the Far East.
