I'm really not a fan of these arbitrary set weightings. The guy's set is mostly 9's and it ends up at 7.5 because of two cards almost no one could afford in high grade.
thanks guys! yes, I've been working on that mantle set for a while now...she's almost complete in my book. I've gotten pickier as time has progressed and have passed on a few cards..mainly the 62 and the 53 topps. of course pricing on mantles have skyrocketed, but would rather have a card i love vs paying "those prices" for ones i don't. ie 62 w/ the green line on the bottom, 53 topps w/o a solid red-bottom left corner...i think that 5 i have in the 53t spot is simply amazing for the grade/price i paid.
it's been fun, but almost completed which is why i've picked up on the tobacco card thing....
I actually thought about starting my own thread and posting recent pick ups as well as some of the older purchases. there really is no rhyme or reason, i don't intend to get them graded or compete on any registry. it's solely for the love of collecting.
and considering their age, creases don't matter, rounded corners don't matter, simply eye appeal to me. the subject matter really takes me all over the map. it's a fun lil side project that I've been enjoying for the past couple of months. best part is that try to stay under $10 - $20 per card, but honestly most of them are only like a buck or two....it's fun! >>
I do the same with anything remotely related to golf for tobaccos and oddball. I had a $5 threshold for any non-player related cards when I started and was able to get most all that I have for less than that and I agree... it's a blast! I need to start a thread for those as well. Maybe you could keep some interest in the non-sports forum with a regularly updated thread of random tobacco pickups? >>
that's a good idea acutally. and yes, i remember swapping golf cards pics on the golf thread, in my pre-banishment. you've always stuck out in my mind as it's always fun to see another golf card collector, particularly a collector that enjoys the older players that most don't even recognize...

Awesome stuff for sure! I like the Venezuelan Cox.
About a year ago I questioned the hobby's fascination in Mantle. It wasn't a criticism, just curiosity. But I'm happy to say peer pressure has taken hold, I got the itch, and I recently purchased my first vintage Mantle from Troy (FavreFan1971). I'm going to go drool over your registry right now.
Edited to add: I looked and it's hard to pick out a favorite, but you're right, that 53T is a very sharp 5. You need to add a photo for your 63T! (I think that's the one that was missing.
Can anybody tell me why the Mick had no card in 54 or 55 Topps? I'm assuming some sort of dispute.
<< <i>[I'm really not a fan of these arbitrary set weightings. >>
Agree in the subjective, arbitrary weightings, though some cards like the early Mantles should weigh a ton more than the far less in-demand later issues. After all, how much more desirable is a 51-53 Mantle than the 67 or 69? But what's even worse is when you see some wack looking sets with huge "GPA's" and better looking cards "ranked lower." If one doesn't care what the cards themselves look like, one can just throw money at the Registry Game and literally buy a top ranking on that website. I'd give more props to a set of diamonds in the rough that were carefully selected, and all look insane for their grade, than to a high-label, tilted set.
Part of a small lot of cards I picked-up at an antique shop in Nags Head for $10. Mainly look for books and other neat items, so it was cool to see some sports cards.
Justin ... CONGRATS! Card presents VERY WELL for the grade. Enjoy.

Very nice Matt. As someone once said on this board (and I paraphrase) "It's not too often you will see a picture hanging in a museum with uneven framing".

Thanks. I must look through every one of those on eBay a few times a week, and it feels like 99 out of every 100 are really tilted. Always loved that mountain in the background, and that one lone figure standing there in blurry focus.
1st guy to cross the color barrier for the red sox. looked for one for a while, gave up and had some renewed interest and finally found one. centering isn't great, but I was a beggar not a chooser.
Very hard to find 65s like that Aaron so nicely squared up.
I've always passed on the 79 Ozzie because the bottom banner always seems tilted. But not on this one. The Clemente was my ideal example even though the centering is not dead on-- wanted very low grade with centering and focus, as too many look blurry to me in places. It seems that with the 55 Roberto, the low grade ones are always wrecked and the high grade ones are too pricey and still usually have some tilt. Was pleased to finally spot a low-end one that looked nice.

Hey Moose! Rocco! Help the Judge find his checkbook, will ya!
Some great stuff here. Too many to mention them all, but a quick shout out to the awesome looking Gehrig, the Wilfred Brimley Autos, all the Aaron cards and the Gem Mint Dr. J! I had an awesome mailday yesterday. It's not often I track daily (or hourly) the updates on eBay's tracking info, but yesterday was an exception. I was expecting a lot of stuff, including a big card I have been waiting to buy for a while.
First up, an auto of "the Logo". These Upper Deck autos are some of the best bargains out there. I remember back when they came out they were going for big money (to a teenager anyway). I picked this up for a little over $20 delivered: Next up, I have been building my 1986 Fleer PSA 9 set in earnest for the last couple months since I completed my 61 set. I picked up 3 nice HOFers at good prices last week and they arrived yesterday. My first cards with the new hologram holders and I like them.
Last but not least, this is a card that I have owned a couple times before and I regretted selling both times. I will hold onto this one as I finally got one that I think has great centering. One of the best FB cards out there in my opinion, with a young Walter Payton smiling. Did he imagine as he smiled for the camera as a rookie that he would someday run for all those yards and break the career rushing record?
Wow Steve, that's a lot of star power! I agree that the Payton RC is one of the very best football cards of all time and that yours is a top notch example. Congrats! Make sure you take it out often to enjoy it.
Steve I can see why you were checking the tracking. Great looking 86 Fleers with one of the classiest stars (Joe D.) to ever put on a Pistons uniform. Enough said about Walter Payton. That is one sweet card and will some day add one to my collection. Congrats on some nice additions.

How come every time I go to an antique market looking for cards I see 1970s commons for $10 a pop and a box of 1990 pro set for $35 ?
