Here's another one of my raw finds that came back from our hosts last week, a 1893 S Quarter in a PC XF 45 holder:
The coin has a repunched mintmark, but it's not recognized by PCGS so I didn't submit it for sttribution. As I understand, this is the scarcer far right mintmark placement.
Jeff, Not only that, but I like the Repunched Date RPD on that '93-S as well... however, I don't even think they recognize those either. Pretty cool in any case. Nifty!
A Barber Quartet is made up of Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, and Halves.
Tim- I didn't see the RPD, but it does have it. Good eyes.
And you're correct that PCGS doesn't recognize it (nor NGC). The bottom line is FS#=PCGS recognition, otherwise it's "worthless". Maybe I'll write a "Strawberry Pickers Guide" to Barber Varieties and see if PCGS will recognize those.
Here's another raw find returned last week from our hosts, a 1892 O Quarter is a PC AU 53 holder:
This is a Type I reverse. I already have a nice looking AU 55 Type II Reverse, so this one won't make it into my Registry set. I'm planning on keeping '92 Type i & II reverses and the '93 to '95 dual mm positions in my set. Even if the rest of the coin world doesn't recognize them as significant varieties, I do.
Darrell - Have any 35's that look like Jim's newp 05-O in 45. I'm a buyer. Doesn't have to be an 05-O. I look forward to seeing the pics of your 40's and 45's. Great strike on your 05-O.
Jeff - Really neat 93-S with the RPD and mint mark. And just because our hosts don't recognize varieties doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't. Good call.
Pics for this PM, newp into Milo's collection, PC58:
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Verne...My 05-O in 35 has more meat and nice original crust if my memory serves me correctly! It does suck to have to have everything entombed in the Bank. This conversation is pushing me harder to get off my arse and take some pictures!
I've wanted to see the Cornhusker Barber Halves for quite some time; he finally published an album with most of the 58+ coins photographed. These are great photos and great coins. Take a look!
Here's another one of my raw pickups at FUN last week, a 1897 Dime:
I already have a nice PC AU 58 in this date, but I liked this coin too much to pass on it. I'm guessing it will retyrn in a 55 holder, but it still has a lot of nice color.

I purchased several raw Barber Dimes from an Orlando Dealer at Summer FUN on Thursday. Here's a 1893:
There's something going on in the date:
My guess it's a die break, not the '93/ '92 variety, but I'm not sure. Anyone reading this know what the variety is supposed to look like?
Feigenbaum:
"The regular '93-P is scarcer in circulated grades than mint state. Sharply struck with nice luster."
and..
"The 1893/2 is the best known overdate in the series, though not discernable in low grades. Breen reports at least 4 varieties of this overdate, which exists in both proof and business strikes."
A Barber Quartet is made up of Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, and Halves.
I'm having trouble finding a good example of what the 3/ 2 variety looks like. The photos in Coinfacts don't really show me what to look for. I can't see anything on the coin for sale either.
NGC usually has some good close-ups, but they DO NOT recognize the variety. The image two posts above has the diagonal cross bar of the 2 within the lower loop of the 3. You may be able to magnify the ebay image.

I have some distressing news to report to all. My (our) friend Mike Hayes has been hospitalized. While I am not at liberty to discuss his condition and problem I would ask everyone to pray for him. When I am able I shall pass on any updates when they are available.

Definitely not the 93/2
I didn't think it was the 3/ 2, but it helps to get other opinions.
Here's another new raw pickup from Fun, an 1899 Dime:
This one looks like there's a re-punched 8 (in the upper loop:
It appears I'm the only one that recognizes this variety...... Oh well.
Rob - Wonderful album tone on your '98.
Jeff - Good eye.

I like the look of the '12 D Half as a 45; it's a textbook example in my opinion.

There is a PCGS MS-62 out there for sale right now of the 3/2... Here is an example to compare with:

Here's another raw purchase from FUN last week, a 1909 O Dime:
It looks to me like there might be a repunched mm. There a feignt image inside the "O" on the left side:
Obviously PCGS doesn't recognize it.
Jeff, Feigenbaum on the '09-O:
"Two RPMs are known - a 1909-O/O West, listed, but not illustrated by Wexler & Miller, and the 1909-O/inverted D."
Neither of these seems to be related to your example.

I too share concern for Mike. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery. He really is the heart and soul of this thread and its two previous versions.
Get well soon Mike. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

New Barber Purchases
Mike- Good to hear from you. We're all very concerned and wish you well.
I guess no updates on Mike. I know we're all praying for him.
A new raw 1892 O Dime showed up in the mail today:
This one appears to have a re-punched date not recognized by our hosts. It's noticeable inside the loop of the 8 and 2, but other areas as well.
I purchased the Flynn book on Barber Dimes- it's in transit. Perhaps This is one of the varieties in the book?
Nice job picking out some cool coins Jeff!... still praying for God to give Mike favor in health, and if needed, an excellent recovery.

Jeff - that is a neat RPD on that 92-O Dime.
Just to bump up the thread:
Yeah...hoping to hear some good news about Mike! Nice 03!
Wrong Thread!
