As a type collector, there are many series where I am completely out of my element when it comes to grading…and this is one of them! Any thoughts, based on these PCGS photos, as to whether this 67 might have a shot at an upgrade? Thanks!
That coin is very nice for a 67! I dont see any marks on the obverse and there only a few small ticks in the wings and I mean small. Fields look great. Strike is decent for San Francisco. I hear PCGS likes luster for 68s and that is hard to gauge on photos. Looks like one Id consider sending back in for reconsideration! Thanks for posting and if you regrade, update us!
@RAB, PCGS has historically favored (required?) fabulous luster and/or killer color for the MS68 grade on the classic WQ series. To my eyes, your coin is an MS67, whether MS67 or MS67+ doesn't matter too much to me, I don't see it as an MS68.
Thanks @TomB ! Luster seems to be the key piece of the puzzle here… I feel like the luster is pretty strong, especially on the obverse, but I’m guessing I’d think differently if I placed this one next to a true 68. To be honest, I was really only wondering if it might have a shot at a +
Honestly, the coin looks a bit flat. Hairlines are not prominent. Too many ticks and the swirls on the obverse just detract from the overall appearance. It may be a 67 but I dont see it upgrading. JMHO.
Wow, both of those are really exceptional! Dont see color like that in the 40s very often! Ill have to look at my coin and see if its an upgrade candidate or not!

Did anyone win any of the quarters that went off the rails tonight on GC??? I got blown away on two and never even bothered to bid on another! Wow!!!!
Some full pricing for sure. The '49D per CoinFacts has a large disparity between PCGS and NGC graded coins. It makes me wonder if old-holder NGC-graded holders remain in those holders because of unsuccessful cross-over attempts?

Pretty quiet here lately so I thought I'd share my most recent pick up from 2022 FUN.
Was anyone else there and if so, did you have any luck with Washington's?
I was unable to get there until Friday morning and was unable to find much of anything remarkable.
I was very lucky a friend of mine spotted this for me.
It was extremely well hidden on a dealers tray in a rack of other trays.
I super happy to have bought it at a very fair price and add it to my set.
It does have just a very little thin bit of haze along the obverse perimeter from 12 to 3 o'clock.

Sharp looking proof, and great pickup! I don’t have any proof Washingtons as I am working on a mint state set, but I have my eye on a couple. I prefer them with original haze, and (generally) the more the better especially if it includes iridescent blue hues. I’m working on a set of Walking Liberty proofs and that’s what I look for in that series.
This is not my coin, but I came across it and it’s in a Details (Questionable Color) holder. That surprised me as it didn’t jump out to me as AT, and there are plenty of other examples from this year and series with color from the same spectrum. Can anyone with a more experienced eye than mine provide any insight?
I bought this but it was lost in the mail. The seller said he sent it to the wrong person and that they are mailing it back to him. Hopefully I end up with the coin. I will not add to my registry set until I get it in hand.
I have no idea if I have posted this one before, but it is one of three of the same issue that I have that all were submitted once (in the 1990s), all received the same grade and all have the same overall look-
@erwindoc said: @TomB and @PocketChange those are beautiful coins! Tom, what does your coin grade? Looks like at least a 65, if not higher.
Mine graded MS67 in the 1990s and the population for the date/mm in that grade jumped from a whopping nine coins to an even dozen with the three that I sent it at that time.
Well I have been looking at this coin for over a month and finally made and offer and they countered and I ended up buying this coin which now completes the 83 coin set and moved me into 18 place. In my 183 coin Variety set it has moved me into 2nd place with 3 more months on my 10 year plan to complete. All I need now is the 1934 d.
I also wanted to send congratulations out to Dr Phillips and his Brody collection which has taken over 1st place from Wondercoin in the Type B and C Quarters. His other Washington Quarter sets are just amazing including his 184 coin set with Varieties which is also Number 1. Here is the link to the Type B's
I was scrolling through the pictures in CoinFacts and was surprised about the high numbers of 68's. Maybe I never really looked before, but I thought 67's were pretty darn good.
For the 32-64 silvers, the population report shown today is
67 - 8512
67+- 1872
68 - 151
68+ - 2 (1941, 1948)
Has this been a gradual surge, or did come in spurts?

You would find interest in removing the beautiful toning with dip? I like it as it is... the toning enhances the coin presence for me.
I would not consider dipping the coin at all. The reverse is really nice. I did consider a light application of MS70.
My apologies. I thought MS70 was a cleaner of metals in liquid form. Maybe "dip" as a term was not the application you had in mind with the liquid cleaner. In any case, I did not understand why it was felt the process, however you call it, was necessary in your considerations... you have a beautiful coin there.

I'm not certain what there is to gain from putting MS70 on the coin, but you have seen it in-hand and I haven't. As for grade, the coin has the feel of an AU58 to me.

Well ten years ago when i started on my sets there was no + and most of the MS 67 coins were out of reach for me, than came the plus and the prices started to drop on the 67 as more 67+ coins were coming out. All I can say it sure seems like since david retired that toning is now worth a point or two.
I believe when i bought my 1932 ms 66+ there were 20 coins in that grade now there are over 90. A lot of coins came out of the woodwork this past 2 years or more with the sunset sale that continues on GC. I also had no idea there were that many MS 68 coins.......

Got this back from PCGS. It actually crossed over as PR68
I sent it to Great Collections and it is up for auction now.
Any toning or color? What did it grade before?
68... Yes it is quite attractive
The true view pictures were just posted yesterday
No cameo???
No Sir, no cameo given
It's beautiful, but I agree that there is no cameo. The original toning along the edges is quite attractive to me.

Just picked up this one. Purchased it with plans of applying some MS70 and putting it in my album. Having second thoughts now. What do you guys think?
I like the toning. What's the grade?
