Who is in for the baseball HOF coin? Edited on 3/28: Gold sold out. Silver and clad are backordered.

I'm in for a proof and UNC. Mint is calling them curved coins(shaped like a bowl)

There will be gold, silver and clad.

    Which?

I suppose all 3 will be ok. No home runs from these though.

  • Most likely silver ones for me.

  • One of each Silver Proof and Uncirculated for me. I don't really collect US coins, not a huge baseball fan and usually hate gimmick coins but there is something about this coin that I like

Silver is your best bang for the buck. My predictions for commem sales are scary accurate. I see a sellout for the silver $ and strong aftermarket sales with a huge HSN promotion. These will perform like the buffalo dollars aftermarket.

A USA Today article would be likely.

I agree. I think these have a much broader appeal than anything the mint has put out for awhile. Last time I liked anything from the mint was the 2009 UHR. Glad I bought one of those. Everyone said it was just overpriced bullion and would only be worth melt within a couple years. image

I might be interested when the special collectors set comes out. We all know its coming.

It might have a special Chinese Baseball and some sort of Baseball Card .

Any guesses on the issue price ?

  • No idea. The mint has it listed as TBD but I assume prices will be in line with what we saw for last years commemoratives. Maybe a little bit higher because of the unique shape and the challenges with striking coins like that.

I will be looking forward to the interesting errors that will result from the minting of these different types of coins. Anyone anticipate any different types of errors due to the coin being concave?

The coin being concave or convex depends upon how you look at it.image

The article does not indicate any mint mark..... will there be one?? Or several? Cheers, RickO

Are these going to be for sale in Atlanta?
  • On the silver dollar pictured there is a P mintmark on the lower left of the reverse(?) just above the seam of the ball. Other than that I don't know. Don't the gold commems usually come from either west point or san fran?

I predict the silver dollar will sell out by June 1st.

    I'll be ordering a few.

Gimmicky and all but I really like the design.

One of each for me + one silver proof for my two sons as keepers.

Not expecting much appreciation for the gold ones, I just like them.

I hope that kiyote is right about the silver. The comparison to the 2001 silver buff dollars is a great one. I had not thought of it. I may stock up on the silver ones - equal numbers of proofs and uncs.

It will be interesting to see how the proof/unc breakdown of this issue goes.

A lot of my non-numismatic friends are in for the silver and or clad for their kids as well.

I was not into the hobby in 2001. How long did it take for the 2001 silver buffs to bump up substantially in price?

Not long at all...they went up steeply then settled down to where they are about at today (I am referring to ungraded items in original packaging). Decent profits could be made! And one of my most favorite designs ever...

I will get some of the HOF coins as I really like baseball etc. even though I am not a big fan of the design. I agree that the aftermarket sales will be huge with the tv hucksters and silver will be the focus. A new sports related coin with a completely new minting process. Lots to talk about and hype up there.

I wonder if there will be a 3 or 6 piece set with nice packaging. Even though my dad is no longer here I think I will buy this in his honor and the packaging would make him smile I think.

I'm beginning to get a bit excited because I'm wondering if the gold will look nice curved.

  • Not sure I understand this whole curved thing. Is it going to wobble all over in the plastic capsule?
  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 35,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm wondering if the prong gasket will hold the coins securely.

the edge of the coin should fit snugly on the sides of the capsule to prevent wobbles. the high point will rest on the capsule if inverted. I wonder about long-term rubs there.

Prices for the half, and dollar were listed last night. NGC has a pretty cool label for these as well. Plan on getting a few. Nice to have two hobbies come together.

In Vegas you might see 2 of them Gold Coins tied to some Dental Floss and used as a part of some performance art costume.

    At a Dentists Convention maybe.
