A 1/12 fractional taler (doppelgroschen) from the German State of Mainz commemorating the death of the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz from (1763 - 1774), Emmerich Joseph. Slab incorrectly states Philipp Karl, who was the archbishop-elector from 1732 - 1743.
I'm quite fond of the seated liberty Peru design, and for $25 I didn't see much downside to this little beauty. The surfaces are very prooflike, and the die polish/repair lines are one of my weaknesses. Maybe I'm the only person who thinks these give coins character? Anyway, here are my attempts at imaging this little 15mm coin.

I remember when I first joined the Darkside, most people collected British or British colonial coins, to the extent that some members were even complaining about it. There seems to be a serious change towards talers the past couple of years, for a variety of reasons, one of which being that several British coin collectors rarely post their newps anymore, some sold them, some others lost interest all together in numismatics etc. We rarely even see Japanese coins from our members that were and still are committed to them. I mean, the coins posted are fantastic, but in a thread such as this one, I would have expected some more variety in the countries and themes collected.
As for that little half dinero, it's a terrific little coin, and if you really like it that much, you won't find it hard to build a set of them, all in gem+ grades at the same price levels as this, more or less. Apparently they are still as plentiful as they used to, and their prices are still very low. Peru has used this design successfully in various denominations, from this tiny half dinero, to dollar sized coins and even to some of their beautiful gold coins. BTW, your imaging skills are simply outstanding!

Dimitri, if you look at the first 'page' of posts you will see more variety? I know there's a Japanese piece, an Australia error, … I posted three pieces from three different countries …
I always value your posts - in fact you're the reason I joined this forum, after our exchange of eBay messages! - and I definitely see a lot of talers each week. However I do feel a decent amount of variety has been displayed (thank you for the Greek contribution, BTW) and there's always the Crazy Coins thread if you dare!
These two Conders from Suffolk arrived today. The Blything halfpenny in MS66RB is just blinding in hand. I like the bluish toning on the reverse of the Hoxne (but I would call it "BN" not "RB").

<< <i>Wow, those are both sweeeet Conders. Maybe they meant red/blue on the second one.
Unfortunate how those NGC prongs cover up part of the design though. >>
Yes, but not unfortunate how they allow you to see the edge lettering. I'd rather have the prongs and be able to see the edge, than not be able to see the edge lettering and attribute the piece correctly.

That is good you can see the third side. Seems like most Conders I have seen have a special edge.
Too bad they couldn't make the prongs out of a clear material or maybe even just a bit smaller.

It's not in the AU or MS arena as are many of the 8Rs I've seen here, but I thought this one had a lot of meat left on the bones for a VF30 grade. Also, I like the crusty look of it.
The obverse rim is also interesting. It seems the planchet rim was folded over during the minting process leaving an interesting look to the denticles above the portrait. I asked Roman what his thoughts were on this, and he showed me a piece he used to own that had a similar look, but less prominent. It's clearly not post-mint damage, and gave the coin a bit more "uniqueness".

Nice coin, Brandon. Like I told you before, I really love the original skin on it and have a few pieces in my collection that have a similar look and feel (both of my 1772 and 1773 for example).
By the way, VF30 seems about 5 points undergraded to me.
The effect you see on the obverse dentils, and I would love to hear some other thoughts on it, in my opinion is what happens when the planchet was thinner in one place and the edging process raised metal to create a partial lip. During the strike, the lip folded in and dentils were impressed on it.
Here's a piece I just got in the mail which my grandfather bought for my grandmother when he worked in Iran in the 1970s...
It is a 2 1/2 Pahlavi gold dated 2536 (I think) which translates to 1977. According the Krause, the coin as a actual gold weight of .5885 oz. But the total weight of piece with the bezel is over 1 ounce. Krause also didn't say what the mintage was for this piece? Not sure if I should attempt to remove the coin from this bezel or not?
It's 60 mm. I had to make this custom flip from a currency holder (inert). I would love to know how you guys store your larger coins:
AND SPEAKING OF LARGER COINS … Brg … I submitted one of those Westphalia notgeld pieces to ANACS and they kicked it back saying they didn't have a holder large enough. Is that an oversized NGC holder? or a regular size holder???
