Post your newest world coins here! Bring on the pics!

brg5658brg5658 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭✭✭
Type2 had a good suggestion in another thread, and I am always happy to have some eye candy to look at. There are lots of awesome coins in this forum, and by all means continue to create separate threads for more in depth information on any particular coin. Let's just make this one a "picture book" of the sorts of new world acquisitions. Maybe there is another thread like this already buried somewhere in the world forum here (?) but I didn't see it on the first few pages of history.

I'll start with my newest world acquisition. I picked up this shilling last week. Great luster, and I'm a sucker for the "bull head" George III design. It's the "RRITT" variety, with the die flaw making the "B" look like an "R" to the right of George's forehead.

Good idea. I like a single "Post your most recent acquisition"-type posts.

I have a few raw 8 Reales coming from the recent Aureo sale, but in the meantime here are a couple of my recent acquisitions. Both are Carlos IV (1803 and 1804) and both are in PCGS MS63:

What is that first piece? I really dig the design of both the rev and obverse. I usually don't like the busts on asian obverses but that guy's hat and military outfit is pretty neat image

My last purchase was an Australian 5c Die Cap error. Based on the provenance of the piece it's probably a 1969 and extremely rare.

    Yikes, called out!

No really good reason for this coin, I did notice there are apparently 2 varieties for this date and got interested in trying to fig out which this one was, I think the privy marks are large or small(?) on this year.

I recently also bought these less than impressive coins

Need to buy, little funds scenario?

Duki, I've always thought those cornucopia Francs are neat. But mostly I like the eagle with arrows on the Napoleon piece. Most of my 19th century coins are in similar condition, FWIW. Who says just because I have some nice graded coins, I can't enjoy some circulated raws? image

Anyway I digress … here's my newest NEWP! so fresh it's still in the mail image

It's the Greek goddess, Athena. She's holding a spear and resting her arm on a book atop a pillar. It's generally accepted that the book is the Bible.

It is indeed dated 1896 -- but this proof version is a mid-20th century restrike of the original non-proof 1896 design. I know that this proof was struck in less than 1,000 pieces, but finding exact mintage information for pieces like this is a bear. It's graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo by NGC. I know there are a few others out there graded, but they must be in strong hands...as I said, I hunted for this piece for 2.5 years to find one with cameo contrast.

Thank you, mnemtsas2 for the education!

Hey, since the Greeks were one of the first cultures to translate the Torah from Hebrew [into Greek], and the King James bible was translated from [among other sources] the Greek Torah, I'll just note that she's resting her arm on a bound Torah image "wah wah wah wahhhh"

Brg … OK seriously … I still love the coin but I was just SLIGHTLY disappointed to read that it's a re-strike. But only slightly. It's still very awesome and you should flaunt it everywhere proudly. It was still minted in 1896, right? So it still has the age factor. And I am always fascinated by re-strikes because how in the heck do they manage to strike it so cleanly without showing double-die or overstrike evidence?!? image

I'll never get tired of pillar dollars. I even bought a copy once, just because the cameo and deets were so purrrty.

I'm one of them who believes our dollar sign ($) comes from the pillar.

But mostly I love it because of the two globes, signifying the Old and New Worlds. Such an awesome design.
