Looks like BBCE just listed a nice PSA 5.5 on ebay. I'm very tempted to buy it as the centering looks better then most.

WOW! He was born in Detroit, Michigan as Casimir Eugene Kwietniewski, His career ended on August 27, 1954, in a game between the White Sox and Athletics. In what became an 11-0 White Sox victory, Cass was hit in the head by a pitch from Marion Fricano. He had to be carried from the field, and was given last rites at the hospital, as he was in critical condition. Michaels recovered, but the pitch impaired his vision and caused him to end his career. Bob doesn't look to happy about this whole thing:

Swift is pictured in one of the most famous photographs in American sporting history. He was the catcher for the Detroit Tigers on August 19, 1951, when St. Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck sent midget Eddie Gaedel to pinch hit during an actual MLB game. The stunt was inspired by the James Thurber short story You Could Look It Up and Gaedel was allowed to bat when the Browns showed the umpires a legitimate baseball contract. Swift knelt on the ground to receive pitcher Bob Cain's offerings and it is this kneeling stance that is captured in the photo -- and Gaedel took a base on balls. He was immediately replaced at first base by a pinch runner and he never appeared in a big league game again; he had had no baseball experience in the first place. Wiki

Nicknamed "Four sack Dusak" I hope that was in reference to homeruns. Another homerun hitter in the minors but only manged 24 HRs in 9 years in the majors

  • Alright, I guess I'm due. Here's Billy "Double Nickels" Nicholson. I have no story to share.

    And the back

    image
  • What the heck. Here's Walter "Master of His Domain" Masterson. Is there a better unibrow in the 1952 set than this one?

I'm probably out now until we get to the 300 level - although I would love to get my SGC 88 Cavarretta up here - pride of my collection.

Very nice cards on this page! About Bill Nicholson; He led the Cubs in home runs eight seasons in a row, a mark that was tied by Ernie Banks and finally broken by Sammy Sosa. He was the most popular Cub of the decade '40-'49. Former Cubs star Kiki Cuyler, tinkered with Nick's stance and batting style. He had Bill crouch more and stop lunging at outside pitches. Cuyler not only is credited for transforming the failed prospect into a feared power hitter, but also recommended the kid to the Cubs' scouting staff. In '43 he hit .309 and led the league with 29 homers and 128 RBIs. The following year he hit .287, leading the league with 33 homers, 122 RBIs and 116 runs scored. He lost out by one point in the MVP voting to Cardinal shortstop Marty Marion, a .267 hitter who didn't lead the league in anything but fielding percentage. But the Cardinals won their third straight pennant, while the Cubs languished in fourth place. Died of a heart attack on March 8, 1996, at the age of 81, and is buried outside Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church in his hometown. Bill was the last survivor of his immediate family. Two wives and two children died before him. SABR

BTW ... the last two are good examples of "Frost" on the edges of the slabs. I bought both of these cards slabbed, cracked them out to get autographed, and put them back into the slabs.

I don't think I've ever seen someone with the middle name " Hilarian". Had over 100 more walks than strikeouts in his career but finished with a 65-49 record. Go figure.

Out of all the 52s I have autographed, I have to say that, IMO, this is one of the nicest when you consider the autograph and the condition of the card.

Sorry, guys. I stayed up and watched (on DVR) the lamest dunk contest in the history of mankind. That was aweful.

Anyway, here is #196 Solly Hemus (signed and unsigned).

I'll take #220 Joe Presko (signed and unsigned) next.

I forgot all about All Star weekend. Oh well, doesn't sound like I missed much. Love the Solly autograph Shane.
George was a specialist Mailman. I'm sorry, I thank him for serving our country.

Strickland's baseball career was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Navy in March 1944. He was stationed as a Specialist Mailman for 16 months in Saipan after American forces had captured the island from the Imperial Japanese Army in July of the same year. He was given his honorable discharge in May 1946. Wiki
