Maybe the bidders thought it was a regular sized 75 wax box, LOL..
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I took a chance on a set recently listed on ebay. Listed as NM/MT, mostly Mint. Unfortunately, got it today (expecting nm to nm/mt, I always assume a full grade lower) and it was Ex-mt. I'll always do my best to find the silver lining and keep a set, but in this case, there wasn't a single 9 and honestly, I don't think a single 8. Yount was oc, but known from the scan, Brett had one touched corner and one completely blown in. Ryan was a 4~. To the sellers credit, he refunded immediately, so back it goes and the search for nice raw continues.
I'm looking to build a graded mini set and am trying to get cards that are centered nicely on the front and back. They don't have to be 10s, or even 9s, but I'm finding it very hard as no one posts scans of backs for these lower grade cards.
I venture this is the thread to be looking for assistance with this so hook a brother up!
MiniMaster has offered his set up for sale on the previous page. His set should meet your needs. Shoot him over a PM........In all seriousness, your goal will be a long, difficult and expensive proposition at this point in time. Good Luck!
Guys, I'm having a difficult time reconciling an actual 1 year hiatus...I will have to pray about getting a 1 year "Obamacare hardship" waiver. So whoever bet on the January 1 date might be a winner. In the meantime, I am crashing ebay getting all my purchases done before the New Year deadline - it is pretty comical. TWalker. I believe CalamityTodd is pretty much spot on. It will not be easy for you to put together a Centered set under PSA 9. I noticed a large percentage of the newly graded 8s are a bit o/c t/b over the past year. I'm still pretty much a buyer (maybe not this year though). However, it is a great challenge and well worth the pursuit. Putting together the 1975 regular set in centered 8 is just too easy as it appears that Fritsch's stash of 1975 regular vending has eclipsed Conlon's hoard by a HUGE margin.
Well... 2013 ends on a bittersweet note for me on the collecting front. As a number of you know privately, and I have hinted about here, I had been considering selling my set for some time. The seed was really planted when Matty broke his up. We discussed it at length, and over time I felt like I was in the same boat with the same feelings.
While my passion for 1975 minis hasn't changed and wont, the registry set, for me, had run its route. I started out with a goal of completing a graded set, with my first 4 being psa 8 Brett, Yount, Carter and Aaron 660. It took several years, but I finally graded a PSA 7 187 Denny Doyle to finish the set. It felt great. From there, my next goal was an 8.0 set, which took time. Next came an all 8+ with no qualifiers set. I finished that with a self graded Ed Goodson. That card never showed up in an 8. Finally I set new goals for myself at 8.25, 8.5, 8.6, 8.75, 8.8, 8.9 and finally 9.0. Like many, I got seriously sidetracked by the short issue, having to take the time and money to replace 200~ cards. At the end, I was down to maybe 10~. Quite a feat and an unnecessarily expensive one.
What I realized first hand is that each step was exponentially more expensive than the last and what it was going to take to get from 8.92 to 9.00 was just not something I was ever going to be willing to do for several reasons. Raw is very hard to find nice anymore. When the rare 9 came up that I needed, it generally sold for more than I was willing to pay. That left buying and grading common 10s as the only route to get there and I did start to buy some and keep some that I graded, but I just could not reconcile that route and my set has sat stagnant for a year or so now.
I do love the set and see it as a great investment, so I considered keeping it as is. I considered selling it whole, which in a way was my preference. You put that kind of time, passion and effort into something, you want a collector to enjoy it. I also considered parting it out and selling it myself or consigning, probably through PWCC. In the end, while not quite actively considering things, the option came to part with roughly two thirds of the set. I thought about it for a few weeks and then once I decided it was time, discussions went quickly and amicably. I am very happy with the home they have found and am in the process of packaging them for shipment today. As the last day of the year, it seemed the appropriate day to retire the set. Like I said, bittersweet.
The good news is that for now I get to keep a large chunk of the set, including may keys, and I will decide what to keep and what I will part with. My approach to minis from here will be two fold. On the high end, I plan to use a "catch and release" mindset, where I enjoy the chase of finding and grading special cards, but then pass them on to mini collectors. I also plan to pursue my old goal of creating an entire graded "qualifier" set, oc, mc, etc.. I have a pretty good head start sitting in my workshop right now.
I'll still be on the boards and enjoying all of your company and our discussions. I appreciate the journey we have all had through the years. You have all made it a much more rich and enjoyable one.
Congrats on the sale, Jim! Sounds like you made the right decision for yourself, and that is always going to be an intensely personal decision.
I have been working on this set since 2007 in PSA 8 or better on the registry and am still not finished. Not sure what my feelings will be after finally completing it, but it will always be my favorite issue from the 1970s. When I look at the registry set today, I see a set that has become increasingly popular with more collectors than ever attempting to put it together, often in high grade, too.
Good to know you'll still be in the mini discussion, Jim. Look forward to talking more with you sometime next month when we meet up with the rest of the LI chapter, LOL..

Congratulations, Jim, on the sale and your decision. You had put together one amazing set. It's comforting to hear you'll still be engaged in the Mini's and in the discussions here. Good luck with the qualifier set - it sounds like alot of fun.
Jim, for me it is BITTERSWEET in all caps I tried my best to talk you out of it but I am glad that your cards are going to a fantastic collector who loves the set. For me it is almost like losing a family member - I felt the same when MattyC sold his set. I always enjoyed reading his thoughtful posts as I do yours. I am happy for you and I am sure you got a great price - I look forward to your posts here on your latest "catches" but I also believe that this watering hole is pretty much dried up. However, if you happen to snag a full-sized Gullet or C. Johnson 8 and above please lmk! You might have to crack that sealed mini-case though That is gold-money there!
It looks like T. Allan (MiniMaster) got the attention of PSA last night concerning the old thread. Maybe we'll see some progress in getting it back - the moderator seems interested in trying to help.
Jim, You've been a major contributor of knowledge on this and the old thread regarding the 75 Topps Mini's. It has and hopefully will continue to be a pleasure reading your posts on this thread. Wishing you continued success wherever your collecting passions take you.
And, it would be AWESOME to get the old thread back. So much rich history there and so interesting to see the evolution of the set. Frisella as a pop 3 9, Harrah as a pop 11 8 and so on. Now we look back and see things very differently.
The classic argument over 301 Roberts and 460 NCLS in a 9... good stuff.
I found these two at a card show today. Both are full sized. I must have gone through over 500-600 mini's to come up with these - my eyeballs are about to drop out. It would be nice to get 8's on these, but even in 7's, these are nicer looking than the two already in my registry set. Sorry about lint on the card savers.

Nice pickups, Nick! I think the Tanana is in 7/8 range, but Driessen appears to be a solid 8 if they don't hit you on surface snow..

It is funny how we see things based on a number. We all do it, myself included.
Regardless of grade, that Tanana is one of the nicest ones I have ever seen. Full sized, very well centered for the card, remarkably well printed for a card that is normally a hot mess.
Very nice finds. In either case, you can't go wrong as both pay for themselves in 7 if you miss.
I just sold a lot of tougher PSA 7 minis on ebay, including a PSA 7 Tanana..so hard to find this card with the complete black background behind the ANGELS team name all the way up to the top.

Thanks guys. I'm going to send them off to PSA this coming week. I'll let you all know how it turns out.
Darn, Tim, I forgot about that lot. I first saw it earlier this week, and I was contemplating bidding on it to get that Tanana. That one is definitely a beauty regardless of the technical grade. And for that matter, so is that first Miller.
Jim, I know what you mean about seeing a number instead of appreciating the card for what it is in light of its difficulty. You can count me in that group as well. I've thought a lot about that while building my set, and it's a big reason why I haven't upgraded many of my 7's yet. For many of them, I just haven't found any 8's that I think are visually better than my 7's. Case in point is the Tanana. I think I've passed on the last two or three 8's that have shown up on eBay because by my eye, there just wasn't a sufficient enough difference from my 7 to prompt me to pull the trigger on them.
I do think that in general PSA is tougher on these "short" red/yellow cards than they were in the past. I see a lot of weaker PSA 8s in flips that predate the advent of the half point grading system.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
So, yesterday I dropped off a rather large box at the post office. Thought the poor lady at the counter was going to give herself a stroke lifting it to bring it in back when we were done. 434 minis, gone in one shot, but good to know that most of my set found a new home together. Very mixed feelings on the whole thing, but it is done.
I haven't decided exactly what I will be doing with the rest. The short answer is keeping a few and selling off more. If anyone is looking to fill holes or upgrade, pm me and I'll let you know if I have what you need. I don't have a list of what's left at this point. I need to sit down and go through it. Maybe this weekend...
FYI - Bunch of high grade shorts hit ebay today. There are as many up now as I have seen at the same time in years. Please look carefully before bidding, a bunch of them have been moved to the top of the holder and the gap is on bottom.

While not all of them are junk, the simple majority are and it makes one wonder how these ever found their way into 9 holders. I think most of us would've received an N8:MISCUT on numbers 352 and 616. In fact...I'll bet it took some additional effort to fit that Rice into the holder without pinching it's diamond cut.
Diamond cuts were the last evolution of the problem. A diamond cut card like many of those can not fill the holder. Legit ones landed in baggies for that reason.
I recently renewed my membership to PSA and decided to try something different this year, so instead of using my membership voucher to submit the usual six raw cards for grading, I'd try the review route instead. Many of you know that I am an avid 1975 Topps mini baseball set collector, so I decide to scrutinize the 550 or so PSA 9 cards in my graded collection and cherrypick six of the highest end PSA 9s for the grade and send them in to PSA for review. I have had good results in the past with my review submissions, but had always sent in a larger sample size, so I wasn't sure what the outcome would be this time around, but needless to say I am very happy with the results! The PSA 10 #436 Frailing was a pop 1 (now pop 2) and the PSA 10 #461 World Series Game 1 featuring Reggie Jackson was a pop 3 (now a pop 4). I actually graded the second PSA 10 #461 card about a year or so ago and sold it back then, so 2 of the 4 PSA 10s were my submissions.

Its actually not as uncommon as you think. More than once I have gone back to look at an old order and seen new 10s on it that I did not get initially (go go gadget dynamic database).
I'm on Day 44 now of a sub that included a bunch of pack fresh minis~hoping to pop a few more 9s. Getting closer to completion.

Well, here are the results on the Tanana and the Driessen that I showed a few weeks back. It looks like the PD on both held them at 7's - that's too bad, because these are otherwise beautiful cards. However, I'm very excited by the Borgmann. I think this is my fourth or fifth different one that I've subbed, and I've finally now got an 8 on one. The Brewer is one of those underrated toughies - it always seems to be off-center top to bottom. This one is a beauty that I found ungraded last summer. The first time I submitted it last July, it received a 7. I completely disagreed with that grade, and cracked it out for this second try.

Thanks, Tim. I'm going to take a close look at the Driessen again when I get it back, but I think it's worth a crack out and re-sub. I may also post it here for your opinions on it. I probably should not have paired the Driessen with the Tanana in the same sub given that they have similar PD issues with the Driessen's being much less severe. Both cards came out of the same pack fresh lot and have similar condition features, so I'm thinking they're likely from the same print run back in the day. If I re-sub the Driessen, I'll send it in with a pile of potential higher pop 9's that I'm sitting on for a good special.
Jim - I saw the Tolan was seriously short...another one of those underrated toughies. Also, there was a another recent auction that I was interested in, but laid off due to it appearing short.
What surprises me on both of these auctions is that, judging by cert numbers, they are the results of very recent submissions. Theories abound! Is there a new grader handling minis? Are they relaxing the 80mm minimum size a bit? Did it just 'slip' through?
Busted a single wax pack - three 9's and a couple of HOFers. Was surprised Carroll got through - a hair shorter than the rest:

What surprises me on both of these auctions is that, judging by cert numbers, they are the results of very recent submissions. Theories abound! Is there a new grader handling minis? Are they relaxing the 80mm minimum size a bit? Did it just 'slip' through?
Curious indeed.
