Holy schnikes! Nice pop! Where did you find the Briggs?

I'm not exactly sure other than I know it was from a card show in the last 3-4 years. I had the card in a Unikeep binder with the rest of a raw set I built. About 1.5 years ago, I stumbled across the SMR article on the 76 set and learned about the Briggs being tough in a 9. So, I pulled that Briggs from the binder and replaced it with another one almost as nice. I finally got around to subbing it a few weeks ago.

  • << <i>

<< <i>Oh My God! Huge grats on the Briggs!!! I have five different orders in with 2300~ cards total and I think I have worn out the refresh button over the last month or two... >>

Hope you have better luck with your sub than MMD. I have been reading through this thread and it looks like he is best friends with the GOD LOL!

This mini set is interesting, it appears there are not that many people interested in it, but the ones that are are very rich. Why is that? >>

    1. Nick thanks a ton! Very nice Briggs, funds have been sent image
    2. As for the G.O.D. yah...I am going to be home December 9-16 so I'll finally get to take a look at the damage. I'll send a few scans if I have time, but I suspect I'll be working 18 hour days for 7 days straight trying to catch up on inventory, registering cards, and finding a place to display and store all the crap I bought over the past 6 months or so.
    3. As for mini collectors - it seems that there have been a 1/2 dozen or so new collectors gunning to complete this set over the past 6 months including a major buyer "the Hill collection" - A few have sold out like "Craveking." I did a check and there were a very large number of PSA 8s graded this year (almost as many as 1975 regular). That is interesting as it seems that 4SC has scoured their inventory a 2nd/3rd time this year etc...I am very interested to see what the pop report movement will be like in 2014.

Henry - I have noticed the same about the 8s, 4sc in particular. I feel like they have offered more 8s this year than the last three or four combined. I think we are seeing a real drop off in finds of virgin sets, shows and packs.

Is the "Hill Collection" the same guy that has the PSA 10 84 Donruss Master set?

    Thanks,

I believe it is the same guy who bought the 1979 Ozzie 10 from a board member here. If he is for real, I think it is safe to say that none of the #1 sets from the 1970s are safe.

He bought the Spence sets from the 70s - he also bought the monster 1976 set from BBCards4U and the Czar 1977 monster set...its just a matter of time before he dominates the decade. My goal is to complete the decade first, then he can amaze with his run of incredible sets! (Except for 1973 of course, I am glad I snuck in on Dave's setbreak before Hill got wind).

PSA 10 Yaz card in the current MH auction. I'll take my 9 any day.

Jim, good luck on the SGC 98 Brett sale!

Thank you Tim. Only 2 bids so far at 990, but its very early.

Definitely some nice yaz's there, but the mini is NOT one of them. Take my 9 and most others any day of the week.

Hey Henry, I hit a neat 9 on a set we have talked about, the 70 Carew AS. Was pretty happy with that one.

Yea, that Yaz is definintely quite "yugly" I have some uglies in my collection, but I'm glad they are only 8's!

Im a bit slow, I just got the Brett reference. Good luck! I'll have to push it along a bit image
Those 70s AS cards are a complete beast! Congrats on the Carew. I have the Carew in a 9. I believe I am down to needing only 5 to complete that mini-set in 9. That is actually one of my goals. I have never seen the Jackson - I believe I need the Powell, Petrocelli, Yaz and Koosman as well as Reggie. Hopefully, I can knock down the Yaz. I missed the last Powell that came up (underbid). Did you hit any 10s or other 9s?

BTW Collecting cards is never dull...I had been searching for a 1972 Traded Morgan PSA 9 for 7 years...kept losing or missing, then in the past 2 months I have won 3! image I only really wanted one.

Did anyone here win any of those raw mini's from the Klinger83 set break auctions on eBay last night? Many of them looked really nice. Generally speaking, I don't usually have much luck with these set breaks as far as receiving the product as advertised, but I went ahead and bid on and won five Mini's advertised as "Mint." It was cheap entertainment for 8 bucks. If I get a chance, I'll post them up here after I receive them and give my own independent assessment of the grades.

A number of them went for really high prices including the Milbourne #512 going for $22.50 and the Davis #564 going for $15.50. These were ungraded!

Here's what I won. I was pissed that I didn't get the Claudell! At least I got the "other" Washington. I mostly tried to get the cards with low pops. I couldn't believe some of the prices. The #1 Aaron and the Carter RC stick out as way to high for raw. I think the Carter sold for $60 something. I just sold a PSA 8.5 for about $90 at the National. There is no way that one was equal to my 8.5. Hope these grade ok. I figured why not take the chance. They will be going to PSA at the next Chicago Sun Times show in March.

Buying 75 Topps Reg. Size PSA 9
1975 Topps Registry Set "Scott's 75 Topps Set"

Nice cards! Congrats on the Davis #564. I'd be curious to hear about its condition once you have it in hand. The Wise looks like a potential 8 as does the Cosgrove and Hargan. All are relatively tough in 8. Great job!

I'd be careful about grading the Blyleven, Randle, and Borgmann - I think those are centered too low for anything higher than a 7. But measure the centering once you have them in hand and compare to the PSA standards for centering.

Also, make sure to measure the Giusti and Perez #499 - judging from the photos, they look short. PSA generally won't holder them if they are less than 80 mm tall (although a small percentage slip by). I'm thinking they are short based on a visual of the length versus width proportion.
  • schapkoschapko Posts: 341 ✭✭
I appreciate your insight. I'll definitely measure up and maybe just stack them against the couple hundred raw minis that I have laying around to see the sizes. I was really surprised I got the blyleven for only $2?

  • I threw in a bunch of bids - lost more than I won. The one thing I noticed in this set was how fantastic the centering was overall...looks like the set was put together with care and probably way before mini raw began to dry up. I ended up with around 50-70 cards, not sure...but the one that caught my eye was the Brooks Robinson - I cant believe I ended up paying over 50 clams for that! As I go back over that scan, I am a bit worried that it might come up shorter than 80 - if so, it will look nice in my raw set.

How have people fared with raw cards from this seller in the past? The color in the scans looked almost floursecent on many of these, lol..

I wouldn't be too upset. That card looks like a PSA 7 to me and with grading fee, you can buy one for less already graded.

    It looks fine to me.
  • Thanks...btw a couple really nice cards received strong bidding:

    Alou PSA 8 = 115

Very strong Alou! I was thinking of putting in a monster bid for this because I know that many of the 8s are short...

    Winfeild PSA 9 = 392

I actually believe that the buyer got a great deal on this, again, another card whose true population is significantly less than the reported pop on PSA; seems a good number of strong Winfields have come up the past several years though

Well, I received the following Mini's that I won from Klinger83 today:

    107 Barr
    222 Spillner
    249 Thompson
    283 Foucault
    290 Matlack

They are all gorgeous, and I think all have a shot at a 9 as advertised. They look like they just came out of pack today. I'm pleased.

I'm the winner of the Winfield image

It's a replacement for a "shorty" PSA 9 I got a few years ago before all the information about the short cards came out in the previous mini thread.

  • Can you guys believe this? The guy that just broke the Mini set sent me the cards...he jammed 3-4 cards naked into card saver IIs! This is after I spent over 300.00 on raw minis. Should I negative this guy? I don't believe I have ever sent a negative feedback but I believe he deserves it. It is not like this guy is a novice, what do you guys think?

Sorry to hear that. Did they get damaged? I've done this with my own minis before and they're okay as long as they are carefully inserted. Would have been better to use CSIs though.

$300 on raw, they deserve a LOT better than that.

If they're damaged, I would definitely give a negative, and for that amount money, I would return them for a refund. If they're not damaged, I would let it go but give no feedback at all.

Sheesh, I buy a few cards from him and they're carefully packaged in individual card saver II's. I think I spent a grand total of 8 bucks. You would think I would have gotten the crammed treatment on my cards, not the other way around.
  • Any news on when the mini's will be getting the new slab treatment?

You think those will get a little bump in prices, compared to older slabs.
Also I'm sure a lot of people will pay to get minis in old holders switched over to the new holders. Mini master/duff or moondog you going to convert over? Do you think they will do anything with real short ones getting put into the new holders? Will they automatically just reslab, without looking at the card again.

I have roughly 1,500 new slabs in hand now. No interest or plan to move minis. Too much risk of damage and roughly 33% more storage space needed to house em to boot.

That said, it will be a good time to try a few crack out "reviews" where i have low risk bump worthy cards.

I am going to send in a few reviews with my membership vouchers, so if any bump, I'm hoping they will be slabbed in the new holder, but I'm not planning to spend any money on reholdering the cards I already have otherwise.

Finally, been trying for years for this one:

  • Congrats on the PSA 9 Bobby Bonds Jim.

I'm with Jim, no plans to re-slab any cards, no need to risk damaging cards.

    Congrats on the Bonds!

Thanks. Not a white whale for me like Brooks Robinson, but not too far off. Has always eluded me by coming in at 8 or being the underbidder on a nice 9, so I was pretty psyched. Very few minis on today's poppage as these were actually from a group rip. Bonds saved the day there.

I did hit my first regular 75 psa 10 in years; #212 Garvey/Burroughs 1974 MVP, so that was kinda cool too.

Sorry for the delay, I was organizing 6 months of purchases over the past 4 days! (that story to follow).
As for reholdering, it is an interesting question. I believe Jim and Grote speak for me, I will reholder some through crackouts and reviews...I know there are many that I will send in over the next 5-10 years.
Also, I would be very surprised if PSA reholdered obviously short cards. But this is an interesting angle. They have been great about cleaning up Minis over the past 3-4 years.
Eventually, I would like to reholder my #1 set with "Mintmoondog collection" (that will be my vanity set image) but this can be done over many years/decades and I am in no rush. I intend to break the #2 set in 2025 at the 50th year anniversary of this set.

EDIT: BTW grats on the Bonds 9! I know I probably have been the "over-bidder" on that card for years Jim image - I feel that the Bonds is undervalued; and the gradeable raw is very dry (except for yours). Also, this card is particularly high in percentage of shorts (based on color combo)

  • A Christmas story.

I apologize for the length but I felt I could tell this personal story to the mini-community. I went home to sort through 6 months of purchases well in excess of 150K (best guess). So what would you expect? On the positive side, things got so crazy there were major purchases that I didn't even record. One included a huge lot from BBCE which included a 1981 Topps wax case! Imagine coming home and finding this case with no idea you had bought it lol. A negative was that the 1980 Topps vending case was opened - not sealed. I am going back through my emails to see whether it was sold as such. Then I couldn't find 1/3 of a 1967 set I bought from "Love of the game auctions" most of the high number part of the set. I knew my son had brought his friends over on many occasions and that set was sitting in the middle of the basement opened! You can imagine how freaked out I was; especially those of you that remember how my idiot next-door neighbor stole my entire collection several years ago and put them all in storage. As Jim wrote in private "oh no not again!" So I went through everything for a couple days and went to the back room where many boxes were stored and ensured that the boxes were from either Steve Hart, David Keith (Dugout) or the junk DonRuss (1986-1989). Nothing. On the 3rd day, I finally emailed Al (Love of the game) with questions and he was very prompt and gracious. Finally, I prayed to God and promised if he fixed this I would not buy any more cards for 1 year. I have no idea why I came up with this deal but that is what I prayed. I then went to the back room and immediately saw the box sitting in the corner underneath 3 other boxes and, of course, all the remaining cards from the set were there! I swear I looked at that box at least 15 times and it had the BBCE tape or Keith on it...anyway, I am a man of my word and will honor my Christmas deal with God. 2014 I will be out of cards (I consider it like taking a roughing penality in hockey). The outcome is that many of you can certainly bid more freely on minis or racks image I will close out my 2013 deals and then relax for a year. The interesting thing is that I am only 20 cards away from completing the 1970s mega-decade but maybe God wanted to teach me some humility. Who knows these things. Merry Christmas!

Jim, congrats on the Bonds 9--see that mini group rip wasn't so bad after all! Who says you can't come out ahead ripping vintage packs in this market??

ROFL you guys are a crack-up...I'll start getting the sweats before January 22 for sure - the hard part will be keeping myself from checking BBCE or doing an ebay search of "1975 mini psa"
MM you nailed my strategy...I am hoping my absence collapses the mini market and then I can buy your set at a major discount Jan 2015 image
