Awesome Cam Neely rookie. I remember when that card went through the roof circa 1991 or so. I had never even seen one until I purchased one by mail order. (Ditto for the Lemieux box bottom.)
Neely cards were so hot in those days that his '85 OPC 2nd year was as in demand as his rookie. He was a great power forward who would have played several more years if not for a knee injury.
That 85 opc Neely was super hot up in New England. The 85 opc Mario's were super hot everywhere. The 85 opc Pelle Lindbergh would get sold out every weekend in the Philadelphia area. Throw in the MacInnis and Al Iafrate rookies too. That was a very popular set back in the day.
The scratch on the Cahan is on the case. This puts me at 9/66 and I have convinced myself I am going to complete the set so I am going to start searching for a few of the big boys now.
Those are some really nice '57 TOPPS. I picked this Gilbert RC a few days ago. I have a question: a Perreault PSA 8 OPC RC went for $2200 on eBay a few days ago, is that the going rate for that grade? I know that card in that grade has a low pop, but that seems a bit high.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
I'm going to be posting pics of twelve 1985 box bottoms that I will be receiving from PSA this Friday. The grades are in, but I am not checking what I've got until they arrive. So it will resemble a "pack rip" in that I don't know what I'm getting when I open it up. I will open the package and flip it to the back of the cards. I will then check the fronts one at a time and scan them here. These are my last good 1985 box bottoms for now. I submitted four Gretzky's in the group. I'm praying for one to be a PSA 8 or 9. It's not the end of the world if I don't get it, but these box bottoms are super fun to collect, and super hard to get in high grade. The o-pee-chee Gretzky is elusive due to box folds in two corners. I also submitted a couple of Topps. I subbed one Mario Lemieux that will get a 7 or 8 at best. The rest are very tough commons, with some having the highest grade as a PSA 6. It's going to be fun to do it this way. I've never not checked a sub before it arrived. This will be a first for me. The grades have been on their website for me to look at , but I have not checked, and don't plan to either.
Not to sound picky, but that Mario psa 10 rookie should be in a different holder. I've been looking for a strong Cheevers, but the one that's being offered is a little too weak.
Jarome is awesome. One of my good friends in elementary school was named Jerome Fondoe. My chances of scoring great grades on box bottoms is as good as the Devils chances of scoring great goals on Jonathan Quick.
Thanks, everyone. I had almost given up on finding a 7, but PWCC came to the rescue. I only have 7 more to upgrade to have my set in all 7's or higher. Of course many are just as tough or tougher than the Lumley, but I will persevere.
I thought that Jarome looked familar. Hey Frozen/Nathanael, can you leave me feedback as I have done for you lol. I thought I'd let that Jarome go after 6 years of looking. Then I found another for $1 and hit another PSA 10 1 month later.
There was some serious price action on the PSA 9 Gretzky and Lemieux 1986 opc box bottoms tonight. Not sure if anyone saw it. Whoever bought the Lemieux rookie box bottom got a steal imo.
Those were pretty sweet box bottoms.....I just lost out on the King Clancy RC, I thought it might go for more but I guess a PSA 3 with a crease usually takes a hit even if the pop. Is low.
Very happy to add this one to my collection, although I still don't have the first clue as to how PSA deals with the black blobs on 1980 Topps Hockey--this blob is clearly offcenter.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to mix scratch tickets with hockey cards should have been fired.
As for how PSA grades 1980 topps hockey, the one thing I've noticed is that they sometimes do not downgrade cards that have been scratched. This is odd because some other issues like 1965 Topps hockey have scratch off backs and PSA dings you big time if there is evidence of scratching.
And $290 for the Gretzky 1986 OPC box bottom is amazing. Didn't one sit on eBay at 199 for about two months? Box bottoms are hot!

Well, maybe yes on both counts but...
I have to admit that I was the person who won the Lemieux box bottom. I bid on it more because it was a 2nd year, PSA 9 population 2, of who I consider one of the top 3 greatest players of all time rather than because it was a box bottom. It's just a great picture of Lemieux. Only time will tell if it was a good deal or not... Most modern is touch and go at best.
As for the Gretzky, I was the underbidder. Here's where it gets embarrassing. I had scheduled a snipe way in excess of what I thought it would sell for or what I thought it was worth. For some reason, and I could have sworn i did this, I thought I scaled back my snipe bid closer to the auction end time to a more realistic bid. Not sure what happened but the bid went off at my original snipe price and the rest is box bottom price realized history... This error is something that has never happened before and won't ever happen again. My apoligies to the winner...
Of far more interest to me was the incredible $1K PWCC got for the Gretzky Sports Royalty auto card. Just a great card that I was drolling over. It had it all - very popular set, great shot of Wayne in an Oilers uniform, very low print run and a fairly decent autograph (although overgraded imo).
Jarome is super thrilled about these three 1 of 1's. The Ruosto is a beast, with Topps only having a 6, and the next best opc is a 6. It is going to one day be recognized as a major beast in the 85 box bottom set.
I would like to one day send in some Gretzky cards, but I'd have to send it to his company the same way I send cards to Bobby Orr's GNR. That way you get the hologram that can be affixed to the PSA/DNA holder. Does Gretzky do this yet, where you can send cards to his company and he'll sign cards, and then send you a hologram ?
Here is an Nr-Mt+ o-pee-chee card I just got back from GNR that I will finally get around to sending out to PSA/DNA in the near future. I will also like to do this with Gretzky some day.
Beautiful Harvey Natan. Looks like it survived the cement mixer rather nicely.
Yes eyebone, PSA has me paranoid about getting low grades on those things. I always expect the worst, but my paranoid traits no longer exist because since I get so many 6's, I just expect it.

Just had this one graded. Definately willing to sell if the price is right. Got my eye on a new PSE bow.

Need some 2007 A&G Regular Back Mini's PM if you have any and I will send my needs list.
You are right. That's a very nice looking Gretzky rookie. You did very well as most of the PSA 8s just don't present well.

+1 that is a great looking 7.
That grades higher if not for the left to right. Would be hard to find a better seven.
