It's a 5 due to a small indent line about an inch and a half long running on the front of the card at the bottom starting at the 'O' in Orr. It doesn't break colour and can only be seen when you tilt the card. If it wasn't for that I would think that it would be a lot higher.
There are eleven opportunities to find a 1968 number two Bobby Orr in mint condition. There are six straight nines and five with a qualifier. Bobby is signing with AJ Authentic in May, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if PSA will grade just the auto, or the card too ? I thought his signature with a black sharpie starting on the ice surface and ending at his right glove would be nice, but I'm not sure yet.
The #71 Plante is a 1/1 with only one psa 8 higher. Love the centering on the back and front. Plante's #50 quaker rookie has only one psa 7 with none higher.
Parkhurst loved Jacques Plante. Notice that all his cards in the fifties were special, with full action photos, while just about everyone else swam around in blank, colored, freespace. One question, though. Why didn't Jacques have a regular card in the 1954 series when he had an action card in which he was referred to as "Mr. Zero?"
Parkhurst also loved Jean Beliveau. So much so that they denied Dickie Moore the opportunity to appear on a 1953 Parkhurst card. Poor Dickie Moore. Maybe that was the spark for him to get into construction.
<< <i>. One question, though. Why didn't Jacques have a regular card in the 1954 series when he had an action card in which he was referred to as "Mr. Zero?" ] >>
Can't answer that question, but if Parkhurst did make a regular issue in 1954, then it would have ruined one of the best hockey rookie cards ever made in 1955
Bought this off of Rick Probstein last night. Extremely happy with this card because I bought the card, and not the holder. The corners are very strong 8's. The centering is very nice front and back. I believe it got a 7 because of the little issue above his name on the reverse. To me this is a beautiful nm-mt card.
But I was sad to wake up and find out someone outbid me on another quaker in the Goodwin auction.
Thanks. I think it's the nicest quaker Plante out there. No eights or higher yet. I was interested in the PSA 7 that was for sale, but a few collectors talked about it and felt it was better to pass on it. I feel this SGC card has much better qualities to it.
The SGC 84 is making its way to PSA for a review. I really feel the card is worthy of a PSA 7.5, with an outside shot at an 8 if it was centered a little better. The previous owner was a little suprised at the SGC 84 grade it received after he submitted it.
I will be more then happy if it stays in the SGC 84 holder though. I think the card is a beauty no matter what holder it's in.
I should have the card back in a few months, and I'll post here if it gets a bump or not.
Very, very nice Plante rookie. 1955 parkie is one of my favorite years. Love the red border. The best parkie set of the 50's for me.
The thing about the quaker oats is that the quaker company was getting a lot of complaints about people sending in all these sets and only getting skates and no bicycles. On top of that the three chase cards were hard to come by. So in the end the quaker company made another gesture to send in the sets (I believe without the chase cards, but I could be wrong) to get the bicycles.
Lots of these sets were sent in because the people wanted their prizes. A bike was a big deal back then. And collectors already had the 55 parkie set with the red backs. Why keep the green backs when you could get a new pair of skates or a bike ?
The quaker company also did something outrageous like a "give away land" promotion that year. Really strange stuff.
I believe the company started in Ohio, and then branced off into Ontario.
Very nice cards guys. Love the Orr, the Lemieuxs, and a few others from a few pages back. Now I want to pull out my hockey cards.
Nice work duckus. I pulled a 79 Topps Tiger the other day. I added it amoung my favorites regardless of the gum stain.
This is pretty much my white whale, in two grades less than my dream card. And that's it for me and my dream card. A PSA 4 Taylor is actually more than I really wanted. I'd have been happy with a two.
Trent ... I'm not a hockey guy, but that's a real kewl card. CONGRATS!
STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Wow, you guys have some great vintage hockey cards, I love them. I am slowly getting into the hockey hobby and can one day hope I get just a fraction of the sweet cards you guys have. While this card isn't as awesome as yours, I do have to say I was super pumped to pull it from a pack today. Normally I get crap. I went to the LCS and picked up their last hobby box of series 1 Upper Deck and seen they had two packs left in their open box, so I said I would take those as well. Needless to say, the first pack I opened from the 2 loose packs is where I pulled this.
Centering is really nice on that Plante rookie. Card looks like it should be in a PSA 8 holder. But hey it's only a scan so you never know. I think i would be sending it in for a review if i was the high bidder. Steve
<< <i>I was watching that PSA 8 Geoffrion. You got a steal at $787
Nice pick up >>
I was contemplating whether to bid or not with five minutes left. I said to myself, there's no way you're going to win with an 890.00 bid. This puppy is going to 1,200 ++, so why even bid ? I have lost more then I won with the quakers lately, and figured it would be a waste of time to even bid.
So I place my bid with five seconds left expecting to see my futile attempt be wiped out, and much to my suprise, it ends well under my wimpy bid. Just goes to show you never know what can happen.
The Plante rookie is super nice. Why pay 6k for a PSA 8 when you can have that 7.5 for 4k ? The winner should be very, very happy with that one.
The Mahovlich went for a little under seven, and that tall boy checklist had some nice late action with two strong bidders.
I was the underbidder on the Plante PSA 7.5 rookie, and I should have bid higher. That said, if you can find me an 8 for 6k I would love to talk to you.
I'll be sending in my first submission to PSA/DNA early next week. I have just decided that it may be better having some of these autographed cards encapsulated, for protection purposes mainly.
I can't tell you how happy I was to acquire these two Lemieux rookie stickers. The one on the left is a POP 1 and the other is a POP 2. The scans do not do justice to how incredible these are! Enjoy!!
Seeing how my '56 Football set has stalled for the moment and being a true collector and unable to stick with one thing at a time, I started a new set. Just commons for now but that will change as the funds become available.

A pack pulled card that made it into a 10 holder:
One of my favorite cards of all-time, that Marc can surely agree with:
This Lipton Orr is a tough, tough card:
This card is another pack pulled card that deserved a 10:
And finally, a gift from Matthew last Christmas finds itself in a deserving holder:
<< <i>Nice pull on the Neely.....sweet looking 10. >>
Look at the beautiful centering and cut on that one.
The same with the Bossy.
Nice Mario Natan !
Perhaps I see a MINT 9 Mario or Wayne in your near future
