Here is what the 1989 Russian Postcards Sergei Fedorov looks like. Seems more like a school photo than a sports card. I'm more of a fan of the appearance of the action + portrait Russian postcards from the 70's sets than I am of the just portraits from the 80's, but it is what it is.
<< <i>I love the Kurri and Lidstrom cards. The uniforms are fantastic! >>
I wouldn't say that out loud. With the uniform contract switching to Adidas (granted they own Reebok, which has the current license), there is fear that NHL uniforms will begin sporting advertising. Most of the uniforms in the European leagues now look like clown outfits.

Euro hockey uniforms are a bit too ad-heavy, but there is not as much of them on the footballer kits such as in the EPL, etc. I would absolutely never want to see it in the NHL beyond the manufacturer's logo like they have always had, but separate of that just pointing out that it is possible place an ad on a shirt without it looking clownish.
I used to try to collect some Canadian junior cards. Never knew that Neely card existed. Also never knew Kirk Muller had a Kingston card. I definitely would have coveted those in the early '90s.
Gotta love those Cooperalls that teams were experimenting with wearing in the early '80s. Thank the hockey gods they were LEFT in the '80s!

I couldn't possibly care less about ads on NHL uniforms.

I have a few other junior cards posted on page 28 of this thread if you feel like having a look. Looking for a 1979 Montreal Juniors Denis Savard for a long time. Have never seen one.

Package arrived from Russia. I'm looking forward to finding time to go through them all. Now I'm anxious for the Supersize special to come back up sometime soon on the monthly grading deals.

Don't most postcards fit in the tall boy/oversized holder? Are these larger than usual?

Some of them are larger and some of them are not, depending on which set it is.
Here are a couple of them. I didn't scan them yet, the scans are from the seller:
1987 Vladimir Konstantinov
1987 Igor Larionov
The 1987 set and the 1989 set look almost the same. They used the same photos for the players who appeared in both checklists. The facsimile autos on front are tilted a bit differently when comparing a 1987 w/ a 1989.
Since there's so much attention going on about the 52 Topps Mantle in the PWCC auction right now, here's a pic of my newest pick up, Hockey's 52 Topps Mantle. Rumored to have a print run of about 100 total, this is THE Hockey post war card and I busted my butt to get it. Overtime and double time at work, but it was all worth it. How this card only grades an 8 is beyond me, but just not many to choose from so I'll take it. Enjoy.

Wow!!!! Congratulations, that is a beyond-amazing pickup, thanks for sharing!
Oops! Unfortunately I just noticed that PSA screwed up and labeled your Ulf Samuelsson incorrectly and you'll have to send it in with your next batch of mech error corrections. Pretty typical mistake by them, as PSA never really seems to get a good handle on European cards, especially hockey. The mistake carries over such that they have it wrong now in their specs database and pop report, but hopefully they will correct those problems when they fix your flip.
As they did with many different years, Semic Press in 1983 issued two relatively similar looking sets, the Elitserien set and the VM (IIHF World Championships) set. The two sets have totally different checklists as they are separate sets. The Ulf Samuelsson card is from the Elitserien set, not the VM set.

This is one beautiful card Tomi! Based on the scan, I can't tell why this didn't get an 8.5 or a 9 either. It was graded relatively recently and well after the invocation of half point grading, though. Still, if it were me, I would ask PSA why it failed to earn a higher grade.
Speaking of Bobby Orr, did anyone notice that his 1966 Topps PSA 8 rookie card (non-test version) went for a world record $35,100 in an eBay auction in late November? In the past two years, 1966 Topps Bobby Orrs have caught fire and are starting to become to hockey what 1952 Topps Mantles are to baseball... not in dollar value of course but as the iconic card in its sport. In just over two years the SMR for a PSA 8 Orr rookie has shot up from $9,500 to $18,500, nearly double. Based on the latest eBay result, that may amount appears somewhat conservative.
Orr RC's would be the best investment over anyone else in hockey. Gretzky's rookies have caught fire big time also but the rarity of the Orr Topps and Topps Test in high grade will keep taking it to a higher level for a long time. You just don't see too many high grade Orr RC (PSA 8) auctions now. I think many people are just keeping them and waiting till later to make their money. The fact that there is just 1 PSA 8.5 and 1 PSA 9 just keeps pushing the PSA 8 to new levels. I still don't think most people still fully recognize the contribution and the career of Orr. Hopefully that will change in the future and keep taking his cards to the level they should be. I'm just glad I got my Topps Test PSA 8 and regular issue PSA 8 before these crazy prices.

I think his contribution is pretty well understood - he's considered a top 3 player ever and lots of folks think he's the best to ever play, which is nuts when you consider the impact Wayne had on the game.
I agree with you 100% about the card, and think it has more to do with number of copies available then people catching on to his career. High end cards are going crazy and high end Orr is very rare. That card of yours Tomi is beautiful.
I'm sorry but I completely disagree. Orr's impact would have been much bigger if he played in the inflated goal scoring 80's and 90's doing what he did. Can you imagine a hockey player in the modern era winning defenesman of the year awards every year AND winning scoring titles. Everyone would agree Gretzky had the best career in all of hockey statistically but as far as the greatest "player" Orr takes a backseat to no one. I would even have Howe ahead of Gretzky as he also played both sides of the ice at an incredible level. Not taking anything away from Gretzky's impact but they played in completely different eras. There's no way Gretzky would have close to the numbers he had if he played in Orr's era. Watching Gretzky play was never a problem since we had hundreds of channels to choose from, but imagine trying to watch a game in the 60's. The coverage was monstrous for Gretzky compared to Orr so the impact is understood. Don't forget Orr played his whole career on bad knees, imagine an injury free career. JMO Cheers
Tomi, I fully agree with you on Orr's impact on the game.
And as for card rarity, there is no contest. There are a whopping 1,176 Topps Gretzky rookies in PSA 8 or higher and 635 Gretzky OPC rookies in PSA 8 or higher. Compare that to Bobby Orr rookies: Only 46 Topps in PSA 8 or higher and a mere 8 Topps Test Set in PSA 8 or higher. The difference is staggering.

Gretzky helped opened up a whole new hockey market, California. Took the Kings to the cup finals. Won 5 with the Oilers, post expansion. And yes his era was wild and open hockey but he would have put up stupid points in any era. Great stuff Tom! That Bruins team card looks nice.

Bummer about the corner crease though.
Tom,
Are those 1955's you've got in your lot all Parkies or did you find some Quakers?

Nicely centered for a 68 OPC and the corners & edges are sharper than the scan shows
thanks again, casey!

How did it go with the Bruins team card? Were you able to wipe off the wax?
Wow! Congrats on the tenner Billy Harris!
How did it go with the Bruins team card? Were you able to wipe off the wax?
Nope, it came back a 5. Sharpest 5 ever!
It's as nice as the 1953 Mantle in the other thread but has that dang wax stain on back
Oh well, bummer on that one but it does look like the grades on the others made up for it.
Yes, overall I did well
