    Very well done Mike,

Great info guys on the GAI numbers. Never knew any of that. I have yet to buy a GAI pack, just due to my ignorance on what is real and what might be fake.

LOL - indeed. Amazing how a few years difference makes such a difference.

So what are we looking at for the 70s in terms of average Topps Baseball rack pack price (no star showing)?

    70 - $650
    71 - $700
    72 - $500
    73 - $350
    74 - $250
    75 - $200
    76 - $125
    77 - $75
    78 - $50
    79 - $30

    This should be fun

I've typed in what approximate retail prices for racks 1970-1973 with common cards showing would average. Of course, racks with well-centered cards and racks with no splits or tears would realize full retail price with lesser grade racks realizing somewhat lower prices.. The series would definitely be a factor in value, too..1971 is more popular than 1970 and will command higher prices in most cases..

I think Mike for what you do as far as never opening whether you paid $600 or $800 long term value will only go up.

Congrats and remember you gave me first dibs on the Fisk rack.

Wouldn't hold your breath on seeing lots (or any) of these racks at the National, aside from perhaps at Steve Hart's tables. Been to the East Coast National in White Plains the past 3 years and have yet to see any unopened material from the 70s, let alone racks.

The National, obviously, is a different story where more of the big guns come out. So if anyone here is going please report back on what kind of 70s rack and unopened material action you see. >>

ive been to about a dozen "East Coast Nationals" since the 80s. Last year, i made my first trip to The National (one day trip, never recommend that for anyone, btw).

when i say this, i am not exaggerating....The National is about 400 times BETTER then East Coast National. Until youve experienced it, it cannot be put into words

Yes Jim, I would definitely not pay $1,200 for a 1970 rack unless it was a high series with stars showing. I've seen legit 1970 racks go for anywhere from $500 to $700 without stars on top. It also depends on the series as well.

For the 1972, the prices would be in the $500 to $600 range without stars on top and around 700 plus for racks with stars showing.

John, where were we talking about this??? I can't remember the thread. I actually thought about it as I was scanning these racks in. I have about 25% of the set showing in rack packs I have either front or back so it is possible. I'll keep picking them up here and there and see where it takes me. I'll need to get another rack box too. image

    Mike,

I was going to take some pictures of my rack and cello boxes for youbut the camera battery was dead. So in the mean time I finished going through my 82 racks. This was a case of loose 82 racks that I think came from a company called No Gum, Just Cards. Going through them, it looks like these might have been factory seconds that Topps probably got rid of for nothing. Some of the packs are miscut so that the top of the next wrapper shows on the pack (as seen in the one I'm about to post). Also some have where the back seal has come loose and some have where the seal between the different sections has come apart so the cards in two sections can slide together. But, there are lots of stars on tops and bottom. Probably have at least 30 - 40 packs with stars showing plus some additional with stars showing that have the back seal problem which I will probably open. And most of the packs are in good shape without obvious problems. But anyway here is a double sided star pack that is nice even with the miscut wrapper.

The autograph is on the rack and the flip notes the auto. I bought it from the guy that got it signed by Bench and he bought the rack from Mark Murphy.

I actually have a bunch of 1982 rack packs with stars on top that I haven't gotten around to scanning yet. Maybe I'll do them next. Viking7 on the board sold a bunch of them to me. Great guy!!!

I don't know where you all find all these 70s cellos with stars on top. Though it might be easier to find the ones with stars on top than not. People keep the stars and open the non-stars. image That means all my non-star packs have to be more valuable. How many people had a 78 cello with Mike Lum on top? But since you guys have helped me out here, I could probably be convinced to trade you some of my valuable non-star packs for your ordinary run of the mill star on top packs. Just let me know. image
