Well ... last year I had THIS pack sitting with my stuff:
It was sitting inside this slab.
I knew it was better than the grade. I spoke to Steve Hart and he said the highest grade that a pack would be given with a sticker on it was a "5".
SOOOOOO ... I cracked it open and tried to remove the sticker. THIS was the result:
YUP ... It didn't come off and it put a hole in the cello. So I ripped it and got some real nice looking cards, but most were O/C. No stars ... just got back three from PSA that were graded "8". Sold them for a whopping $45.00. I got a nice looking Elston Howard and others, but will get the O/C.

I forgot what I used, but it was something special to take off sticker residue. Nope ... didn't work. As I was doing it I was psyched, because the sticker was coming off slowly ... little did I realize that the cello was coming off too! LOL

I'm going to do something a little different. Being that I don't open packs, I thought maybe I would open this and see what packs are lurking inside. What do you guys think? I'll probably do it at 8pm or so.

Box looks sharp! Here's to finding a pack with Ozzie or Ryan on back! (I'm figuring that if either was on front that pack would have been pulled but the wrapper obscures the players name on most 79 cello packs..)

Yes, I was happy to get another Carlton pack and the Catfish Hunter pack is nice. Too bad the Dale Murphy is very offcenter. The packs are very typical of the 79's with lots of offcenter cards on top.
It definitely doesn't look like it was cherrypicked before grading.

Anyone have info on GAI holders starting with 103?
The 103 series was the last before they changed designs from the old silver flip (there are a few packs with serial #s beginning with 104 in the silver flips, and they changed the design right after that point). I've had good experiences with packs from this era but you have to know what to look for (seals and corner folds, etc.) and who you're buying from. If you can buy several packs with consecutive or semi-consecutive serial numbers and open a pack to check it, that will be a great indicator, too. I've opened many GAI packs from series ranging from 100 (the beginning) through 103 and the vast majority were 100% authentic.
Regarding what Mike posted above: Most of the GAI graded packs that begin with the serial number 102 were graded under the Ryan Rutter era, which is generally regarded as the least reliable of the old silver flip serials #s, and which also included all those fake 12-card "grocery" cellos from 1970-1972 and a number of bad 58 baseball cello packs, too. That said, I have and have opened a number of GAI packs with the 102 serial number and they were perfectly legit, but I knew who I was buying from and what to look for. I will say this, though...grading was more lenient than usual during the Rutter era and you will find a number of Mint 9 and Gem Mint 9.5 graded packs that don't appear to merit the grade.
