Very discouraging after beating the best pitcher in the league and a fine 4 out hold by Bard. Cinco Ocho can enjoy blowing saves for the Yankees after Rivera retires.
What a huge letdown!! I think #58 needs to hit the trading block while he still has value...make Bard the closer. Huge loss IMO after all the work to catch up and surpass the Rockies. Didn't Paplebon once make the statement he'd like to play for the Yankees one day? Well, maybe Theo should pick up the phone and give Cashman a call. Not gonna get easier when they visit SF, Lincecum awaits.
so here's our CU Sports Forum Red Sox fan pact: if any one of us gets named GM of the Red Sox, first thing we do, even before the "Welcome to the Red Sox Press Conference", is we trade PapelBLOWN. Deal?
I was watching the Rockies' broadcast of the game last night and when the bottom of the 9th started the announcers were talking about the different pitches that Papelblown has but they also mentioned that he prefers to just "challenge" hitters with the fastball. Moments later Papelblown is throwing fastballs right down the heart of the plate to hitters and before I knew it the game was over.
I am pretty sure that Papelblown missed his location badly on that homer to Giambi. It looked like Varitek was set up outside and we all know it didn't end up there so some of his problem is hitting his spots. But if the Rockies announcers know that Papelblown prefers to throw nothing but fastballs and if all of Red Sox Nation knows the same thing, what makes Papelblown think that the Rockies hitters aren't going to know that too and just sit back and wait for a piece of meat to groove? If the closer is going to throw nothing but fastballs, they might as well promote Bard who at least has a fast fastball.

Bard has better location, more speed, more movement AND a great slider that keeps hitters in check. PapelBlown has his ego

I wish I felt the Sox could get to the playoffs without Pedroia, but the news that his foot is fractured has me thinking about a July firesale. I hope I'm wrong.
Aw crap, Bard is pitching the 8th. I was hoping Papelblown would be unavailable. Maybe he will just give up one run this time, or the Sox will get more runs in the top of the 9th.
Damn interleague play - hopefully Bucholz won't have to miss any starts.
I read this morning Pedroia could miss 6 weeks, while that would suck, he could be back with two months still to play. Same time, by the way, as when Beckett should be back and healthy. I definitely wouldn't resort to a fire sale just yet.
I really thought Lincecum had it dialed in, but out in the 3rd was a huge surprise. Superb win by Lester!!
Where is Paul? Has he moved to Pluto??? whazzup?
For anyone going to the Baltimore National in August and hoping to meet up, I will unfortunately not be going after all. Wife is facing two surgeries and we are trying to juggle her flying schedule (she's a flight attendant) and which orthopedic surgeon does what and when. Appointments made for August 3rd, and I really gotta be there.

They have done OK so far with losing Beckett and Ellsbury. Let's not forget they went quite a few games without their three starting outfielders and their backup 4th. The beat goes on and they do not skip one.

Wow, such agression. I guess you're taking the loss of Pedroia and Martinez pretty hard. Don't worry, it's a long season, they'll be back. Ask your wife to give you a hug, and you'll feel better.
I got to go to the game today. Great day for a ball game and the right team won. I just wish Lincecum hadn't sucked so much. I was looking forward to a pitcher's duel.

It was only about 75 degrees at the game though, wasn't it? I know a few miles outside of S.F. yesterday it was around 100, but I thought it was perfect weather at the park and certainly not hot enough to complain about. It seems to me like the Red Sox just had some long at bats against him and his pitch count got really high really quickly and it was clear that he didn't have his best stuff.
Did you see Bumgarner pinch hit the day after his pitching debut? I thought that was kinda cool. He must be a decent hitter.
My highlight of the day was the Jon Lester Sac Fly. He crushed that ball. It had to go 380-390 feet.

<< <i>Did you see Bumgarner pinch hit the day after his pitching debut? I thought that was kinda cool. He must be a decent hitter. >>
He apparently put on a show during BP Saturday morning, and "had some good at bats" during the game. The manager also said that he was trying to "save some bullets" for clutch situations if they ever occurred, but they obviously did not. Besides, the Giants' offensive weapon of choice is the double-play grounder, and in the clutch, they always deliver one of those.
The upcoming 2-game series against the Rays could be a big one. If the Sox could manage to win both of them that would add a nice little buffer for their wild card hopes.
Varitek's had a great season (for him anyway) and he's always trustworthy as a game caller, but I'm worried his play will suffer as the everyday CA. I think he's really benefitted from having extra time off this year.
Wow, bottom of bullpen pretty bad -- but whose isn't.
Papelblown somewhat back to his old self last night -- 97mph, and good location. This was just one batter, though, and he still needs to get his splitter and slider back.
Was that the real Lackey or a twin brother? He looked pretty good and improves to 9-3. Did Ortiz CRUSH the ball for the 3 RBIs or what? Papelbon gets one guy out for the save, I'll take that. Given all the injuries, I think last night was a huge win, now just 1 back of the team from NY...love those Mariners!!
Any Boston locals have news on Ellsbury's status? Why the rehab in Arizona? Was wondering...are the Red Sox gonna have Pedroia show at each game on crutches just to fulfill his contract obligations, or allow him to recoup at home? I would think they leave him at home to avoid any further mishaps or slips with the crutches.
I hope I can put up with all Garza's spitting tonight...big game.
And, the biggest question of all, where is and what happened to Paul???

Pedroia wouldn't miss a game if it were up to him. He wants to be there with his teammates. Most players on the DL go to every game...Beckett has been there all along. Can't remember the last time that guy pitched

Don't expect to see Ellsbury until late August at best.
Hey Al - I read somewhere on here that Paul is just taking a break from the forums for a while. Too much drama or something.
Speaking of drama, I wonder what the offseason drama surrounding Adrian Beltre will lead to? I just read this on Fangraphs
"Beltre’s deal with the Red Sox included a $5 million player option for the 2011 season, which increases to $10 million if he reaches 640 PA this season. Barring some unforeseen injury, the 31-year-old Scott Boras client will opt out and land himself a lucrative multi-year deal this coming winter, whether that be with Boston or elsewhere."
Now that you mention it, I do recall Paul saying something about taking a break.
Nice pic of Ortiz rounding the bases! From Atlanta, it looked like you enjoyed a gorgeous day at the park...been over 90 here for the past 21 days!! Enough already!! Beltre is a big question, but with Boras involved, I suspect the end result will be a loss for the Red Sox. It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, takes place before July 31st. All in all, the team is doing pretty well, given the injuries. We'll see how DiceK does tonight, I'm already dreading the spitting performance of Garza.
Not gonna be at the National in Baltimore. I have some personal issues to deal with that are health related to my wife. Hopefully one day we can enjoy a beer at some ballpark. I may even fly to San Fran, never been to the park...maybe next year depending on the schedule.
Yeah, it wasn't looking like I was going to be able to make it to the National either do to some other trips that I'm more or less obligated to go on (trips to see family). I'd love to meet up for a beer and a game (and some more beer) if you ever make it out to the west coast. If the Red Sox aren't playing the Giants we can always catch them in Oakland, but you owe it to yourself to see a game at AT&T Park. I'm not willing to say it's the nicest park in the Majors but it's definitely in the top 10.
Like a lot of Boston fans, I'm pretty disappointed with Ellsbury. On SportsCenter last night, I saw Pedroia on his knees taking infield grounders with the team (after he walked onto the field on crutches). You see Mike Lowell there every night, though you know he has got to be miserable. But Ellsbury has vanished from the team for the last month, and a lot of people question his toughness and desire to play.
This was in the Globe yesterday, Theo commenting on Ellsbury:
<< <i>"He’s making progress every day in the sense that his symptoms are subsiding slowly but surely. That’s a really important element of this because he can’t start baseball activities until the symptoms are much less than when we last saw him. He’s making progress to that end. There’s no definitive timetable on it, but we’re getting closer and closer to the time when we see him start to ramp up his physical activities and baseball activities and contemplate a rehab assignment We’re not there yet but we’re making progress nonetheless because he’s starting to feel better." >>
writing is on the wall for Ellsbury, but not this year. He's a Boras client, will someday command some big $ in arbitration and then FA, and he's being made out to be (right or wrong, doesn't matter) a non-team player. He will get healthy and then leave the team in big trade in a year or two.
Ellsbury's gone from looking like Boston's favorite son to looking like the red-headed step child (no offense to red-heads intended). I really liked watching him play his first couple years, but there's no room for a pansy on a 25-man roster and if this is how he's going to be, then I hope he gets a great contract somewhere else. A team that wants to contend needs guys that want to play every day.
Varitek is now headed to the DL, the list just keeps getting longer and longer. It eventually will catch up to them and the AAA players and backups will not be able to produce on a regular basis.
Too bad Lowell isn't healthy because now would be a good time to trade him to the Rangers for a catcher (again). With the Rangers just trading for Bengie Molina that would have been perfect timing.
How depressing it must be for the Orioles to look at the wall and see that they're 24 games back and have nowhere to go.
It must be miracle Saturday, I'm actually gonna see the game tonight!! Let's hope Lester is on his game. Nice bloop hit by Nava last night to score the winning run from 2nd base. I think Cash is gonna work out ok.
