There's no chance that anyone is holding a 1979 Larry McWilliams (Braves) is there? I have a couple of VERY fair trade offers out there for the card and can't seem to get any takers. I took the "Cards Your Mom Threw Out" thing to heart and decided to build a Braves team set from when I was 9. That's when I first got into cards and the Braves were only an hour and a half away. Anyway, that's the only card I'm missing and there are 27 according to the website out there. Any help tracking one down would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You would think any 1979 common could get you that card. If I had one I would trade with you.
  • I just checked; 27 of those cards are in people's "collections" and available on the web site. Just propose a similar trade; like for a 1978 or 1979 or a more modern card iwth a slighlty harder book value; etc card and you should get one of those cards. Although a RC; it has a Beckett BV of 25 cents so use that in mind with that you have in your collection.

That's the frustrating thing. You would think it would be easy. I have two trade offers out there now - one where I'm offering a 1968 common and one where I'm offering a 1972 common. I've also offered in the past a 1971 common and a multi card lot with three 1978 and 1979 cards plus some other more recent cards and nothing will pry out one of those McWilliams. It's driving the completionist in me NUTS! image

  • Hi all -

New here but seems like a great forum! My son has been really getting into baseball cards this year (he's 11) so the Million Card Giveaway has been such a wonderful way for him to see old cards, browse through stats, all that.

And he's been trading a lot. I told him not to worry about value (he hasn't gotten any thing very good) but just trade for what he wants. I think the key is to have fun.

Here's my question for you all.... he's now got like 35 cards, mostly from the 70's. No one very good. I think his oldest is Frank Sullivan from '59?

He really wants to try to get some "big" players... hall of fame guys. We're Mets fans (but I already bought him a Met card from every year '61-'83) so he's focused on other guys he's interested in - namely, Bob Gibson, Frank Robinson, Lou Brock and Johnny Bench. Not sure why those four... but that's his group. :-)

How does he go about doing this? Are people really active in trading those guys? I've told him that he's not going to get any really great cards, but he could get those guys' cards from the early 70's maybe?

Should he make 5-for-1 offers? Or should he just try offering even more than that?

I thought maybe you guys here would have some good tips I could pass along to him.

Thanks so much, and enjoy the All-Star Game tonight!
  • First off, Welcome to the Site!

My guess would be that your best bet at getting a 70's star player would be to know somebody that has one of them. There is the MCG facebook page, and the blowout forums, also. If you know what that person likes you can throw them an offer that they can't refuse.

If that's not the case you are going to have to put up some of your earlier cards.

Another focus you could take would be the 60's checklists, many of them feature a big name player at the top of the card (Mantle, Gibson, etc.) then they go on with the checklist. These are easier to pry away from people on the site.

If you have any other questions, this board is very helpful and I'm sure you'll get your answers.

From my experience, most players are available and you'd be amazed at the number actively reviewing their trades. In general, if you want a star card you probably should think about offering 150-200% of it's value in trade (unless you have star cards to offer, then it's 1 for 1). Many of the users on the site use Book Value as reference, just don't expect to get any that are in great condition.

I was pairing down my collection not too long ago and was able to acquire a '74 Joe Morgan, 2x '77 Nolan Ryan, '77 Ryan League Leader, '80 Nolan Ryan, etc. In each instance I offered common cards, but I generally offered 2x Book Value.

I'd say Brock's 1970s cards shouldn't be too tough to trade for, Johnny Bench likely will be tough, Bob Gibson will be extremely tough, and Frank Robinson shouldn't be too bad. That's just been my experience with trading with people on the site.

By the same token you'd have to give up an extreme amount to get something like a '93 Jeter (generally 3x book or more) or any pujols (5 times book or more)
  • Also, you are much safer stearing away from 1975 cards until after that contest is over. pay attention to the contests and the TMCG facebook page you can often significantly upgrade commons that are contest cards.
  • Or if you want to take another route, he could always sell his code cards on ebay for 2 or 3 bucks a piece and save up for something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1973-TOPPS-SET-BREAK-130-PETE-ROSE-E-MT-REDS-/280531412622?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Baseball&hash=item4150f9a68e

    or this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1972-Topps-Reggie-Jackson-Oakland-Athletics-435-HOF-/170508641360?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Baseball&hash=item27b31b6450

    or this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1971-250-Johnny-Bench-/250662751732?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Baseball&hash=item3a5caa0df4

And the condition of those cards are most likely generous compared to what you would get out of the giveaway.
  • Zep, I've got an '83 Eckersley. Any interest?

I'm not really looking for anything in particular, I like the Reds (although that doesn't have to be everything you trade me) and I'm willing to package a couple 60's for a '50 or a couple '70's for a '60 or vice versa where I give up an earlier card for a multi-card offer with more recent years.

I'm up to about 75 Red Sox pre1980 that I want. I really need a prize card to save on the shipping

At this point, I'm getting close to cashing out, so it would take a whole lot to take it away from me and the free shipping that comes with it.
I'd be looking for a deal that includes a variety of vintage cards, you can shoot me an offer and we could go from there.

  • If I were to trade it I would need a good mix of cards from the 50's and 60's, or a couple higher value cards. I don't have a specific number I would like, just an offer that would make it sufficient enough for me to trade away my prize card.

I don't think I'm going to trade my Yount auto, I've thought about it and at this point in the giveaway I think it would be best for me to either keep it and use it for free shipping or sell it and get exactly what I want with it. You have made a very fair offer, but that's just not the option I'm going to go with. Thanks for the offer, though.

if you don't mind i'll send you an offer every once and while to see if you change your mind
