When I first got through to the Mint's web site it already had the #3 in the space for the number of sets I was ordering. I don't know why it did that, but since I knew there was a one set per household limit, I then changed it to 1 set, in case they might automatically cancel all orders for more than 1 set from the same computer. Changing it to 1 set cost me another 5 minutes waiting for their system to change it.
Now I'll never know if it was a Mint site glitch, and whether they might have sent me all 3 sets anyway.
At least I played by the rules, although I was tempted not to.

As someone pointed out earlier, the mint allows for themselves to accept orders above and beyond the total limit,in this case 50000.
Some orders are fraudulent, for some the credit card is expired with no other way to pay, etc. It is conceivable that some late orders made will not be processed even though legitimate.

I believe the household limit will catch out a few people. I am not sure how they do it, but I would guess address is the way. Anything with a duplicate address may get cancelled. Operative word is MAY. I am guessing lots of people tried to get around the limit.
It will be interesting to see when the Mint cuts off sales. The uncirculated set is also fairly new, so some of those sales after the web site came back online may be unc sets. You can't get too wrapped up in the order number thing IMHO.

Checking for multiple orders with the same shipping address is easy to do.More than one with the same shipping address should definitely get the heave ho.
Not so clear is those orders made for more than one set with different shipping address but same billing address. These SHOULD get the heave ho (they would if i was running this show) but some could sneak through i suppose.
Someone earlier mentioned a third address to check, the IP address.More than one ordered from the same IP address SHOULD get the heave ho but i doubt that the mint has the technology to do this check.
Those who had buddies from work,mother-in-law,etc. order extra sets for them? This is okay with me as long as have played by the rules.I can hear the collective sigh of relief that you all have knowing that mr1874 thinks you are okay even though you are trying to get more than one set for yourself.
Does it occur to you though that the person you asked to order the extra set for you might recognize how cool this set is and want to keep it for themself?

This could get tricky... if two people purchased the sets at work at a large corporation, their IP addresses (the IP address the mint will see) will likely be the same. I'd hate to be the employee that purchased the second set!

Why should two orders from the same IP address matter?..
Suppose I'm sittin' here (which I am), and log-in to my Mint account and order one, and my friend Joe Schmoo is visiting, and he wants one too.. so I log out of my account, he sits down at my computer, logs into his account, orders one, with an entirely different name, CC, billing address, and shipping address.. that doesn't bend or break any of The Mint's rules.. then again, what exactly does "one per HOUSEHOLD" mean?.. it's worded so vaguely, it could mean half a dozen different things..
Does The Mint have the technology to sniff IP addresses and reject duplicate orders based on that?.. Is an IP address a "household"?.. far as I'm concerned, it's not.. they need to un-vague their wording and explain precisely, exactly what "household" means.. it's especially important on very limited, hot items like this set.. but some people are gonna try every trick in the book to break the rules that others politely obey.. and a lot of them are gonna end up with nuthin'..

The Mint does not base orders on IP addresses for the same reason it doesn't base them by phone numbers. There are too many public places that orders could be placed (libraries, schools, Internet café's). This would be unreasonable (plus an added expense for the Mint). They are concerned with billing addresses and CC #'s only. Even identical names are not an issue.
Does it occur to you though that the person you asked to order the extra set for you might recognize how cool this set is and want to keep it for themself? >>
This happened to me. I asked my mother in law to order one for me. When she saw it she loved it and wanted one of her own. She called her parents and had them order one for her
"In addition to the one set-per-household rule, all orders that total more than one for this set that originate from a single IP address will be cancelled."
Seriously, your point that the visiting Joe Schmoo should be able to make an order from your computer is well taken.
I just hope for the sake of corporate America that all of those orders placed from offices were done on employee's lunch hour or break.

Thursday was a day of excitement, anger and despair for many coin collectors who attempted to place an order early for the new US Mint Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set.
Whether an order was placed by phone or straight from the Mint’s Web site, the more likely outcome for most collectors was inaction and irritation. Visitors to the site were greeted with a "Service Unavailable" or simply a generic "The connection was reset" message. The site was down more than up. Those calling on the phone were met with a repeated automated message "We are unable to answer your call at this time. Please try again later."
The sets were released at noon ET. By accounts, the Mint appeared to be the busiest they have ever been this year. An easing seemed to occur after the first hour went by. After many, many repeated attempts, phone orders went through more readily. The web appeared to be a bigger problem. The Mint site returned to a more normal and consistent behavior by 3:30 pm ET. By evening, it was as smooth as ever.
Of course many collectors were more than frustrated. The Mint did have more staff on hand, but it comes to a point that there is only so much they can do when there appears to be tens of thousands of collectors who come knocking on the door nearly at once. Unfortunately for our readers, interest in the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set also brought CoinNews.net down for a few short moments. We apologize for that. More than nine thousand collectors passed through CoinNews this afternoon. While we see that in a long day, we have not in one short afternoon. At one point, within the space of 20 minutes more than one thousand readers clicked on the link we provided to the US Mint Web order page.
As of this writing, the set is still available from the Mint for $55.95, although shipping is scheduled at four to six weeks out according to Mint phone reps. There is no telling how much longer they will remain on sale. It is only speculation at this point, but tens of thousands must be sold by now. We will report on that as soon as possible. Only 50,000 are authorized.
Activity on the secondary market has already picked up. In the past few days there were generally less than a half a dozen pre-sale sets available on eBay and premiums were at least $150-$200. As of this writing, there are already 78 auction listings with beginning prices much more reasonable. (See Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Sets on eBay.)
The set may be ordered from the United States Mint Web site at http://www.usmint.gov/, or directly here.
Orders may also be placed at the toll-free number 1-800- USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing and speech-impaired customers may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468).
We would also like to remind readers of our dedicated Web site for the set, which provides much more information. It is located at Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set. Our original announcement of the set may also be worth the read.
Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
