Very nasty incident. However, it would seem, from what you have said, your house was under surveillance. This tells you it is someone who knew about your valuables, either friend or relative (or their talkative ways). A two hour time window is very narrow... so it was well planned and likely they knew the layout etc. Good luck on recovery. Cheers, RickO
Sad to hear this. Hopefully the stolen property gets recovered and the thieves get some "free room and board" for a while. Regrettably, they will, if caught, probably only get a slap on the wrist.
Autism Awareness: There is no limit to the good you can do, if you don't care who gets the credit.
If you are going the safe route, keeping the fact that you have one a secret, and then hiding it's location in your home is just as important as having one, good luck.
I agree- it was very stupid of me. But please let's talk about this part of it in a couple of weeks in another thread when I get in a little better spirits.
Darktone: Don't be hard on yourself. I bet a lot of people don't have their coins and other valuables insured separately. I hope that you get your things back. I agree with many here in that this is probably the work of someone you know. That makes it even more difficult to understand. Hang in there, things will get better.
I will let my father know and he can put out the word to Garden Gate Coins in Monroe, Mike Peter's Numismatics in Rockford and Don's coins and collectibles in Rockton...best Mark
<< <i>I certainly hope that you recover all of the coins, however, just as an aside, how does this post rate a "sticky"? Coins get stolen every day. >>
I would imagine the fact that the coins are a) expensive b) PCGS graded and c) the OP has been around for a while rates the sticky. If sticky-ing the post so that we can easily get at the cert numbers helps catch a coin thief, it may be worthwhile for all of us.

<< <i>Homeowners insurance will cover some and a creative list of other stolen items will help on the claim. >>
A "creative" list? Is that a euphemism for insurance fraud and filing a false police report? >>
Yes very bad being creative, especially if you get caught. Sorry for your loss but be very careful with the insurance claim. Hopefully your coins get recovered
The homeowner's insurance will cover almost nothing of the coin collection. The coins and or currency will be handled as cash. Your policy limit may be as low as $100 in this area or as high $2000 depending on the carrier and part of the countlry you live in. If other paper collectibles such as stamps and comics were as lost there will be similar limitations on the policy.
Other types of collectibles photographs, works of art (prints, paintings, sculptures etc) and antique furniture and other items generally don't have a limit per say other than the total limit applied to personal property stated on the dec sheet, but these can be a headache as your policy's contents replacement section refers to replacing old with new. Meaning that antique rocker may be valued at $10,000 but a new rocker or repro is $500. The insurer will be the higher collectible value on these items, unlike the coins, but you will need documentation showing and indicating the higher value as a collectible versus a standard household item.
Best case is that all or most of your collection is recovered, which I do hope occurs.
Yes, insurance will only cover about 2% of the loss. Recovery is my only hope. Still I am just happy no one was hurt- If my brother or the neighber would have seen them and confronted them and got hurt I would be devestated. I am pretty sure though if things are not recovered rather quickly they will be split up and a partial recovery is all I could hope for. I just hope the right person see's this thread and we can catch the crooks.
My biggest fear has become your reality and I am truly sorry for you. There are few things in this world which can compare with the sick feeling following a theft of personal property and the invasion of one's castle!
Perhaps someone would be nice enough to post a link for Coin Insurance?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

So sorry to hear about your situation. But like you said, at least nobody got hurt. I really hope they catch these crooks! I will also keep my eyes open for the cert #s you listed. What is the estimated value of your collection?
It's actually amazingly simple and straightforward. I purchased a fixed value of insurance and obtained the reduced rate because I agreed to either keep these coins in a home safe with security alarm or housed within a safe deposit box. All the insurer needs is the total amount of insurance requested with this type of policy along with the information (cert number or description of the coin) for any individual coin valued at over $10k. In addition, I pay a small premium on top of this that allows me to travel anywhere in the US or Canada with my coins covered or to ship them via USPS with the coins covered through my insurance. There is only a once-a-year renewal and confirmation of bank address for the collection. Even though we have multiple layers of visible and invisible security in our home, I keep all my coins in the bank so this arrangement works quite well for me.

Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

IMHO an alarm system would have scared the burglars off.
drive safely and good luck with inventory/ catching perps
Hopefully the POS thieves can be arrested and your coins returned.

That would be a start, cut off the thieves hand, just one. No need for jail time.
I firmly believe thievery would be reduced if we(the US) had the balls to pass such laws. Murder someone get strung up in the town square.
