I am currently looking for a PSA 10 of Murphy from the 1991 Topps Desert Shield set (even though he is in the Phillies uniform ... oh the pain of it LOL) #545. Hope he finally makes the HOF.

<< <i>Guys, there is a huge PSA collection of 80 Dale Murphy cards on Ebay right now. I would be on this like white on rice if my wife had just not started back to college. It got some duplicates in it, but it is still the largest lot of Murphy cards that I have seen for sale at once.
I kinda drooled on my computer last night when I saw it. The sad part is, if I were to win that one, I probably wouldn't move up a spot on the registery. Is anyone here bidding on it? If so, I would be interested in some of the duplicates. >>
Joey- I bid on it, but wasn't close to the winning bid. I put the cards in a spreadsheet and made some assumptions and I originally thought you could break even bidding all the way up to about $400 on that lot. There were some highest-pop examples of some moderately rare cards in the lot that would either look great in my collection or sell very well on Ebay. I was most attracted to the psa9 '84 Milton Bradley and a host of low pop Topps and OPC stickers from the 80's. Ultimately, I decided that the lot had a bunch of cards that eveyone on the registry already has and I wondered if I'd be able to sell them at any price. For example, could you sell 1991 Score PSA 10s at any price? Probably not unless a host of new collectors enter the set. For that reason, I kept my bid under $200.

Good point on the 2 examples of the Smokey card. Ray Boone and I exchanged a few emails about this issue a few months ago. Are there 2 Smokey versions or 3? It was my belief that the card you pictured above, which I call "side-view", was actually a variation of "shirttail out", but it sounds like you think this is actually the "shirttail - in" card? Rocky Mountain collection has an example of the one you showed a picture of that you can see in his registry. Its also mislabeled on the flip.
If there's another version of the Shirttail IN/OUT card, I've never seen or heard of it.
I had to send scans of the two different variations seen above to get them to change the flip on mine. One is yours and the other is Mr. Boone's I think. Mine is exactly like his, even the grade.
I'm real happy with the two 84 Topps Supers that I sent in. The Murphy got an 8 and the Ryan also got and 8.

3 things I wanted to point out after watching Ebay frequently over the past 2 weeks-
-There is another PSA 10 Murphy RC on the bay right now, but its a $1,250 BIN and accepting offers. -A PSA 10 1987 OPC Murphy sold for $100 this week (and I didn't recognize the buyer) -A package of 4 graded 1986 Star Murphy's sold for.....$4.50. The package included 3 PSA 9's and 1 PSA 8. Obviously, people still don't give a sh*t about these perforated beauties, despite their inclusion in the master registry. With prices like that, its no wonder we don't see more for sale on the bay.
If anyone needs any of my extra Dale Murphy's for your registry set, let me know. These are the leftovers that I tried to sell on Ebay once this past summer, but got 0 bids, so I will pass them to you for grading fees ($5) + shipping.

Yes I REALLY hate to break up this set, but I am happy to see Murphy get interest from new collectors. I just hope that when it is time for the Veterans to vote for the HoF that they take the way he represented the game into account when they vote. I met him a couple of times and he is the real deal.

I got an email from another registry member who was thinking that the master set card "1987 Braves Smokey" (cert# O238000002) was actually the same as "1987 US Forestry Service Smokey Bear's Team (cert #O238000002). I can assure you these are NOT the same card. The US forestry service (picture posted earlier on this thread) shows a picture of Murphy and Smokey on the front of the card. The "1987 Braves Smokey" only shows a picture of Murphy on the front and there is a Smokey cartoon on the back. "1987 Braves Smokey" was just added to the registry a few weeks ago
Furthermore, Terry provided this data on "1987 Braves Smokey" earlier and I consider him the house expert on this set-
"According to SCD, its referred to as "1987 Atlanta Braves Fire Safety" - "These fire safety cards were given out at several different Atlanta games, with about 25,000 sets in all being distributed. The 4" x 6" cards feature Braves players in an oval frame, bordered in red, white and blue. Only the player's last name is shown on the front. Backs contain the player's nome, position and personal data plus a Smokey Bear cartoon fire safety message."
Let me try to explain the difference in the two sets in one post.
This set: "1987 US Forestry Service Smokey Bear's Team" came as perforated sheets. One sheet was American League players and the other was National League players. This is the set that provides us with the "Shirttail IN/OUT" variations. According to SCD, 25,000 sheets were sent to EACH MLB team for distribution, so there should have been 14X25,000 = 350,000 Murphy's distributed around the league. I don't have a clue how many of each variation there are, but I've seen more of the Shirttail IN variation then the Shirttail OUT. Murphy is not the only player with a variation. Jody Davis also has a variation in the set. Ozzie Smith and Steve Garvey are the most notable players on the National league sheet. The AL sheet had Puckett, Canseco, Jack Morris, and Joe Carter as the most notables. For reference here's what the 2 Murphy cards look like.
The 1987 Braves Fire Safety as mentioned by Michael above is a completely different set. When I sent in my two copies to PSA I called it "Braves Smokey". I wanted to keep the name of the card completely different from the U.S. Forestry Service Set. PSA did not correct the name of the set to what's in the SCD guide. The CORRECT name for the set is "1987 Atlanta Braves Fire Safety". Since this set was only distributed at Braves games, it is much harder to find. SCD says that only 25,000 sets were given out. The set has Murphy, Simmons, Nettles, and Griffey as the most notable players. Other MLB teams gave out sets that look almost the same as the Braves set. This is what the Murphy card looks like.
I hope this clears up the difference in the two sets.

Someone is selling a pair of 84 Topps TL cards as the "unlisted error" with the green flag next to Murphy's avg. This is one of the first times I've seen this card listed as an error. Joey, did you have any luck getting PSA to recognize the green flag as a variation on the card you mentioned a few months ago?
The picture above was a recent addition to Ray's set. Its not mine, but I know he doesn't post here and I wanted to share the picture with you guys. I can't believe PSA graded and slabbed an entire milk carton!
I've been offline for a few months, but have been buying a good bit of raw oddball Murphy stuff this spring and I'm just waiting for good weekend to get it all out and put together a submission to PSA. Should have about 40 to mail off and hopefully will have some good stuff to share in a few months. Anyone else here had any good adds to their master or basic sets recently? A PSA10 1981 Topps card sold yesterday on Ebay for about $130.
Another one of Ray's recent adds. In all my years of collecting Murphy oddballs, this is one that I had never seen before. It looks like a True Value card, but with French wording. No clue how these were distributed.
And lastly I wanted to post a photo of my 86 Meadowgold Murphy. My question is this- This pic is obviously a different card than the cut-out featured on the Meadowgold milk carton that I posted earlier. If the other card was on the milk carton, then how was this card distributed? Were their multiple versions of milk cartons or was this some other product- Ice Cream maybe?
My last Murph upgrade was a couple of months ago (finally got a rookie and a few late '80's items, like the '88 and '89 Fleer Glossies and an '88 Topps.)
<< <i>I can't believe PSA graded and slabbed an entire milk carton! >>
The 1986 Meadow Gold perforated cardds (with stats on the backs) were inserted as 2-card panels inside boxes of Double Play popsicles and Bubble Gum Coolers. The 1986 Meadow Gold hand cut cards (with blank backs) were on boxes containing Double Play Ice Cream. Then there were the 1986 Meadow Gold Milk Cartons which featured drawings of the named player.
Very interesting, Randy. Thanks for the information.
I did a quick Ebay scan and the milk cartons seem plentiful, which was a surprise to me. I also checked with PSA and they claim that the graded milk carton or the cut out card from the milk carton are "either/or" certs in the master set, but you don't need both.
There also seem to be a good supply of the 2 card panels or "stat backs", which I posted earlier.
The last one you mentioned- The blank back which was on the ice cream box- This one seems tough to find. I located examples of Steve Garvey, Cal Ripken, and George Brett, but no Murphy (yet). As a side note, the front of the "blank backs" seem to be identical to the those of the "stat backs".
Other recent adds are the '86 MSA disc and the '87 Sportflics disc. Also, back in March, the set went from around 400 to 500. Ray added a ton of stuff to the master set earlier this spring.
I've got a few new cards in a recent sub that will be new to the set (I think). Several of the Red Foley stickers are already in the set, however the Foleys came in a book and some of the books also had cards on the cover of the book that could be cut out. I've seen these "cover cards" referred to as "cameos", which is what I've requested show up on the PSA flip. I've found 2 so far and will post more data once I get them back and have confirmed that they are what I think they are.
A 1987 Topps PSA 10 Murphy sold for $280 on Ebay last night. I tried to bid in the final moments but wasn't close. I have a feeling the guy who won would have paid alot more than he did. Other than the '79 Topps, I don't know of another basic topps issue thats tougher to find in gem mint condition than the '87. Sounds odd, but their always covered with printer marks.

<< <i>Almost exactly the same amount was paid for the 83 foil sticker. 83 Gold Sticker. >>
Yeah, the foil stickers are tough, mainly surface scratch issues. Centering and corners aren't a problem though.
For Murphy collectors, there is hardly a reason to chase high end low pop Murph cards right now. As long as Min and Ray are in the market competing with each other, you aren't going to win. I had a hard time accepting that, but those guys have the financial ability to pay insane prices and have been doing so for several years now. When I submit to PSA now, I submit in pairs with the thought that if I get 1 10, I'll probably try to sell it to one of them and keep the other for myself.
Whoa... that's awesome that PSA slabs the whole Meadow Gold milk cartons!! I have a Ripken one, but unfortunately it won't grade a 10... it red border is off-center and a few other little scuff marks. From what I know the stat back photo cards were offered in certain packages of their ice cream products, there is also a blank back version of the photo cards that were printed directly onto ice cream boxes, like this
Nice posts Greg and Terry. Keep the good scans coming. And EVERYONE in the Murf master set should be subbing to PSA under the July $5.00 / $4.50 special. Once-a-year low rates, no better time to build your set than now.
That would be me! I was the lucky one who ended up winning that PSA 10 1987 Topps Murphy card.I was hoping to get it a little cheaper, but knew I needed to place a high bid,to secure it. I'm having the hardest time finding that PSA 10-79 Topps Murphy,PSA 10-85 Topps Murphy & PSA 10-90 Topps Murphy.

<< <i>I can't believe PSA graded and slabbed an entire milk carton! >>
Really glad it wasn't full.
Thanks
Randy

I haven't seen a Murphy blank back either, but it is shown on all the checklists.
I collect Bretts and have a blank back PSA 9, but no Brett stat back or milk carton, yet.
There are also Meadow Gold popsicle wrappers with drawings of the players on them, but I don't know if PSA would grade popsicle wrappers.

<< <i>Are you really gonna make me sift through my four 5000 count boxes of 1987 Topps to pull that card?? DANG IT! lol >>
Only if you want to make $280 :>

<< <i>A 1987 Topps PSA 10 Murphy sold for $280 on Ebay last night. >>
I knew that one was going to go bananas.
The '84 sticker went for $122.50
19 bids between 2 bidders.
