HEADING HOME WITH A TRUEVIEW PHOTO! - SHE IS A KEEPER! Just got the notification that my UHR which was ordered at 12:30 on 1/22/09 is now headed back from PCGS with a First Strike MS70 Grade. Although it arrived at PCGS on March 12th it took until today to get shipped back because I had opted to take advantage of PCGS's Trueview service. (Looks like mine may be one of the very few First Strike UHR's to be accompanied by a Trueview photo as it appeared when I last checked that none of those listed on EBay mentioned the addition of Trueview.) Anyway, if you scroll down to the last photo you will see her in all her Trueview glory:
<< <i>Did my coin get switched? I submitted a coin on 3/11 for First Strike. I just got my grade of MS69 but without First Strike.
As long as I postmarked it on 3/11, it should qualify, is that correct? >>
what number did you use on the submission?
407405 was the FS label number for the coin, you also had to note that on the submission as well as add $14 to the PO. if you just sent the coin in b4 first strike PCGS will not give you a FS label unless you specify it with the FS coin number and fees.

I sent in my FS coin to PCGS on Tuesday priority mail, insured. Sent from the East Coast to CA...anyone have experience on how long it usually takes to get the e-mail from PCGS in regards to receipt of the package? I was hoping that by late last night I would have gotten the e-mail...but I didn't.
I also spent the extra $$ to get a return receipt sent to have proof of delivery...but that will be days longer to get back to me.
First package I had ever sent insured...quite a process they go through to insure it isn't opened. Next time I will use a NEW box instead of the old one with tape all over it! Took the poor postal worker about 5 minutes to stamp all the seams with his little stamp. Unreal.
All in all it is costing me $80.75 to get it out there (insured), graded (FS extra $$ of course) and sent back to me (insured), with all the original packaging and paperwork inside the unopened original mint box(extra $$ of course). Hopefully it will grade as a FS MS70. Never mind the cost to join PCGS to get the submission form to grade it!
I am planning on keeping the coin but if I do decide to sell it, it will hopefully be worth more doing it this way.
BTW, i posted on the navel thread and noticed two images recently on this thread are the same lighting, yet one with and the second seems to be without navel. Hmmm...
BTW, wife ordered hers first hour same as me, yet she got her order in 15 minutes before me yet is STILL waiting for hers to arrive(!). She is NOT a happy camper.

It may be the same lighting but from the shadows on the coins you can tell the lighting is coming in at different angles. If you zoom in on the Hi Def image of the second, you will see that it has a navel. It is just difficult to see due to the angle of the lighting.
Good guess. By the way Northwestern was the first (and only?) school to offer a degree in Numismatics. Guess who the sole recipient was? (Hint you would recognize the name if you collect Territorials.)

I did notice that too based upon reviewing the public PCGS postings by date. I suspect part of the reason is that the first UHRs were picked (at least that is what the fulfillment center told us) and gotten ready to go before the big shipping shutdown. It would certainly have made sense to get the better looking coins out first if only to avoid returns. Once the mandate went out to get the rest shipped there may have been less time to pick and select. Another reason is that many of the more recent submissions are going in blind in order to still qualify for First Strike designation. There was likely some measure of self selection when the submitters could still open the boxes and see what they had before shipping off to PCGS.
You win the prize! Here is a link providing details on Kagin's Numismatic degrees. In the past I have jokingly referred to him as the only genuine "Coin Doctor" with his PhD in Numismatics. Apparently his BA degree in Numismatics at Northwestern was a first though his doctorate in Numismatics (reportedly the first anywhere) was from another institution.

Screening by submitters could be a factor, but not that the Mint was screening them for quality.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
<< <i>Screening by submitters could be a factor, but not that the Mint was screening them for quality. >>
I completely agree. And an MS69 often appears to be perfect anyway. It would be impossible for the Mint to screen coins with magnified imperfections. Only the most obvious problem coins would be noticeable.
The vendor just sends them out, no screening at all -
However, TPG's should start to take notice when 2/3 of all submissions make 70.....
And based on recent submissions that I am aware of (and not just one or two coins)
The tide is turning........70's are getting tougher.....
I have to admit that I have personally inspected more than 10 at one time and given the amount of hairlines, I am quite surprised the number of 70's being granted.......

On a side note, it appears that EBay has been pulling some of the Chinese sellers of recent. May be harder to locate a "duplicate" even if copies are made.

Did anyone else receive a survey email? I received this a few minutes ago:
Dear Valued United States Mint Customer,
In order to receive direct and timely feedback from our customers regarding their experience when ordering the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin during first availability, I would greatly appreciate your response to a brief survey about the United States Mint's performance.
Response to this survey is voluntary and all responses will be kept completely anonymous. According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, no persons are required to respond to a collection of information unless it displays a valid OMB number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 1525-0012-0131.
Please follow this link to take the survey: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/USMSurveyLogon?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001). If clicking on the link does not work, please copy and paste this link into your web browser. You will need your customer number to enter the survey site once your browser takes you to it. This survey is very brief and should take only a few minutes to complete.
I will personally read your response, as will our head of Sales & Marketing, and our Chief Information Officer. Thank you very much for your time in completing this survey for the United States Mint. The level of customer service we provide is very important to us --- we will use your response to improve!

**************************** Of course, I have no idea what my customer number is, so it won't let me take the survey. I'll have to check one of my invoices when I get home...
Yes, I've received the same email. The problem though, there is no customer number indicated in the email and you need the customer number to complete the survey.
I got it too. Went back and checked all my emails and can't see any 9 digit number....
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
This is a great move on their part- It gives the appearance of them caring about what their customers think, while not actually having to listen to our concerns. Smooth...
I can't get through on the phone and you can't respond to their e-mail. Now you really would have thought that after all the problems they have had, getting a survey right would have been a high priority. I can't imagine they are going to hear anything positive.
