Alright all... my packs arrived yesterday, but couldn't get to them because I shoot league Thursday nights... I'm finally off work after a LOOONG day, so it's time to bust some wax!
No Gaylords showing... but I'll survive... Nice looking McCovey though...
Pack #2... much the same... The Brett was hanging out on the bottom, didn't even notice it there. Brett looks good from the front, but I think a Badger got ahold of the backside!
Pack #3... SWEET LOU makes an appearance! I've checked that A's Future Stars card 6 times already, I STILL don't see Rickey... Topps must have made a mistake.
Thanks everyone...Henderson will be one of my three submissions. Has anyone looked at the pop report to get an idea of the low-pop commons that might be worth sending in??
-Claude
ps: Robert-- All four of my packs had the wide stick of gum!
Here are the cards I will be subing if we have to sub 3. If we can sub only two I will do the Fergie and the Brett. Can you PM me your address and I will ship the cards and payment sometime next week?
boy these cellos bring back memories, i remember i bought these as my 11th birthday party favors. then i 'm sure we flipped them and i got the majority of them back.
good times

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Good Day, Got mine and had asked Robert to post before I cracked them and won't be needing to bother now after opening. Nothing but 100 commons, Don't quite see where the packs with stars showing were evenly distributed. My Star highlight showing was Jim Palmer? Couldn't see who the backs were, but a Rawley Eastwick ended up being the highlight of the backs. Oh well. I think I will have to pass on the second part, just don't have anything I feel comfortable subbing, nothing that looks at a strong chance at 10's. The tight cello pretty much affected most of the corners. Neil
Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
Well here is my results. Unfortunately almost every card has some sort of corner wear from the cellos wrapping. The first scan is of the star cards. The next 2 scans are the only PSA potentials. Bottom line was that I had alot of fun!!
Real tight cello on all four. I've been in Baltimore for the US Lacrosse National Convention and have just gotten to my mail. Will open tonight or tomorrow and post. Tony
Collecting Topps, Philadelphia and Kellogg's from 1964-1989
I didn't pull anything I would send to PSA from my 4 1980 Topps cello packs.
As far as cello packs go, I just opened a 1986 Topps baseball Cello box (via the "group rip" here), and yes! there are multiple cards with 4 nice corners from those cellos.
I do believe that some 10's will be possible from those 1986 cellos packs?
So I have to say that blanket statements like, "10's cannot be pulled from cellos...", I hope will be proved wrong, via the "1986 Topps cello rip"? I'm waiting to hear from 15 other participants (on the 1986 "group rip" thread) to see if others also had a decent rip and pulled some nice examples, with good corners???
Finally got a chance to rip my four cellos. Unfortunately, they were wrapped very tightly and I don't think any card is worth submitting. The best card I got was Brett and he is bent due to the gum and tight packing. No Henderson, Smith, Ryan, etc. Oh well, that's how it goes. I will scan the best, but I don't think any would grade above a 7.
Do I have to send in three for grading? What is the update on the group submission?
Thanks, Tony

<< <i><< They were repacked boxes. The Rickeys were pulled years ago, one was missed.

So...everyone knew this going into the rip ...or this was figured out after the rip? j/c >>
I stated this with a warning regarding not only the lack of Rickeys, but the condition of the cards prior to this rip being filled. The boxes with stars were put together by some random collector before Steve had them in his possession. How many times did he handle the packs? Does anyone here really think I would have missed an 80's grou prip if there wasn't a convincing reason?
I have to agree that these packs were searched/resorted at some point in time, especially with the large number of Gaylord Perry we found on top. There probably was a sequence that was known and someone already mined the Hendersons.
That being said, this was not clear to me during the rip that we were indeed dealing with non-virginal boxes. I assumed they were not previously sorted through and nothing on the BBCE website led us to believe otherwise.
Not out a large amount of money, but I have to question why Steve was selling these as complete original Cello boxes when this was not the case.

I am very curious as to why this was not made clear by the seller when the attempted, and then final purchase was made...

Justin, at least you pulled three cards worth grading. I drew a blank.
But I think it was clear that BBCE clearly disclosed these boxes were opened and searched, as they did list in detail which star cards (and how many) were on the top or bottom of the cello packs. BBCE went as far as dividing-up the star cellos as fairly as possible for us participants.
Even so, it looked like a few participants here, had some decent 'rip' results from these cellos.
I decided a risk less than $50 would not be a "life changing event" for me! I wish I had Claude's (1966CUDA) packs! LOL!

On the current $5 special it is worth it. A PSA 8 will probably go for $35-50.

Question. Did anyone else pull a piece of "skinny gum" in their cellos?
Three of my cellos had the wide variety gum.
While the 4th cello had a skinny piece of gum.

My second pack yielded a Molitor, Jackson, Willie Wilson Rookie. and some minor stars.
I also got a Harlow in what would grade a 9 and I heard that was a tuff common.
I'm keeping one pack with the set and I've already upgraded with the cards I bought.
Pack 3 I'll rip soon.
So so far I have gotten Carter, Ryan, Eckersley, Molitor, Jackson, Wilson, Murcer, Chambliss and Dwight Evans.
Steve
edited to add: oh and Bruce Sutter.
And I still need 3 cards to complete the set! Actually 4
Steve
i'll post scans of the packs shortly.
