Glad to see my ole Betsy (1820 Mo 1/2 R) found a new home. If you need pedigree history let me know. Enjoy.
Persuing choice countermarked coinage on 2 reales.
Enjoyed numismatic conversations with Eric P. Newman, Dave Akers, Jules Reiver, David Davis, Russ Logan, John McCloskey, Kirk Gorman, W. David Perkins...
Nobody updated this thread this Thursday. Here's an oldie in my collection.
It's a French bronze medal (and a rather large one at that--75mm) dated 1838 depicting on it's reverse a scene at San Juan de Ulúa in the city and state of Veracruz and commemorating the French win there in 1836. These large medals are often mishandled, so I was happy to locate this relatively nice one.
Don't have a newp, but had Todd re-image one of my old coins at NYINC. It's not a toner, but I really liked the frosty appearance that Todd was finally able to capture after years of me failing to do so.
I'm going to take a break on the copper for a while and shift to white metal.
This pattern is fairly common (as patterns go) in silver plated bronze (what I believe to be Sheffield Plate). But this white metal version (ex Norweb) is quite scarce. In fact, I don't know of another.
Haven't posted in a while but recently attended the Long Beach show so the coin juices are flowing again. My collecting of late has been primarily focused on chopmarked coins. I end up having more fun and spending much less dinero on this collection than my other coin interests.
Found this at the Long Beach show for $30. So cheap I forgot to haggle Over 90% of the chopmarked Carlos IIII 8 Reales I see are from Mexico, so I was happy to add an example from the Lima mint with some cool chops.
Next one also found at the Long Beach show in an NGC UNC details holder, which the coin was promptly de-frocked of. One nice obverse chop, Semi-PL surfaces makes you wonder how it survived in this condition. Also, a less common mint for these Pesos with chopmarks. Realized after saving the photos the they came out a little too blue/purple. Not used to shooting PL coins I suppose...still tweaking the photo process.
Finally, a recent eBay pickup, also in an NGC Unc details holder, also promptly de-plasticized. Love these flashy Cap & Rays.

Pretty dang amazing color on that one, Boosibri!
Thanks I have asked @PCGSPhoto if he has actual TrueViews of the 8 escudos and this 2 Reales which is I think one of two 65's currently graded. The other just sold in the D. Moore collection and was not attractive in my opinion. Tough to see how nice this one is in the current pics. Strictly original proof-like surfaces with a splash of orange. Love the coin.
Just picked up this beauty on eBay for an awesome price. PCGS 58 and currently top pop for the year (until @OriginalDan adds an amazing MS63+ example as he's been doing with all the other slots in the set ). This will replace an AU53 example I already have.
Wow, that's a great coin. The nice 8 Reales have really dried up, I haven't been looking as much as a result. Glad you got this one so cheap, it fits your set perfectly.

Thanks, Dan. Hard to say without seeing it in-hand but I agree based on the photo. Have you anything to post? Perhaps something you recently acquired? 《wink》《nudge》

Of course the previous owner cracked it out! How else do you think they would use their thumb to press it into a type album?

A little more pedestrian, but this is more of a type thing for me, I just don't have much material for this thread. Bolivia right ?????
Nice piece of 8, Stork! You're correct - it's Potosi Mint.

And, from my meager Central/South America stash-- 'something completely different':
1823 Peru provisional 1/8 peso AU-50 (in an old NGC slab in case the insert butting in didn't give it away)
I missed this yesterday so I guess I'll play next week
