Almost 300 post here on this subject by crypto79. His post is what this forum is suppose to be about, helping fellow coin collectors. He got called names and flamed. No excuse period. I have looked at Millers Mint and i am far from impresed. Looks like they sell a ton of problem coins. The pictures suck at best if pics are provided. 20 bucks off a 500 dollar coin is not the end of the world. I would be surprised if MM paid 100 bucks for it (trade dollar) I would not classify Millers Mint as a top tier coin store. Certainly not one worth flaming a member of the forums here. IMO THERE is a reason for all the un certified coins offered by MM. Overgraded (increased profit selling 62's at 64 money) and most likely most would be bodybagged by top tier TPG's. Not worth the hassles to buy coins over the net that should be certified for the same money. For the life of me i can not believe why they have gotten the support from some of the posters here. It is hard enough to find nice coins for the right money now days to even consider MM. Most people are told to stay away from the big coin stores that advertise in the coin mags for selling problem coins. MM is no different.

I just noticed this thread and those words by Crypto 79 in his opening post concerning "points". Sidenote (and entirely off topic)...
It is amazing what people are doing these days to capture these "points" on the credit cards. And, I am just a guilty. Last week, I actually agreed to give a service provider a "five figure" overpayment on my credit card (which I wouldn't owe them for at least another 30-60 days) simply because the credit card was offering me "double points" that day. Of course, the (happy) service provider though I had lost my mind (and I probably did). What a concept! I watched a woman this weekend use her credit card to buy $1.95 item to pursue points every chance possible (the store didn't even ask her to sign the credit card slip at that low level and it looked like the store was used to this type of transaction).
I was contacted by a coin dealer this weekend who asked me to consider selling off a large pile of coins of his. He offered me American Express points in exchange for my services! I politely passed ... maybe I'll email Andy Rooney about all this. Carry on.

There are a host of reasons why a credit card makes sense in a transaction like this. 1- 1.5% back off the bill every month(+5% on gas and 2% at the supermarket)=$7.28 back free money(around 50-60 a month) plus save postage for the check 2- get the coin quicker, 2-3 days to get up there,7days to clear,2-5day for them to send the coin. 2 extra weeks 3- the same reason dealers don't like checks from unknown people, I don't like sending my bank account info to people I haven't worked with before 4- If something went wrong, It's nice to be able to refuse a charge instead of hoping you get your money back into your account, I don't use a debit card

First I apologize for any ill feelings caused by one of my employees.
Should I fire him? He is a nut for sure, but he works hard (strangely, but hard) and he is under medical care for other than physical ailments, not a joke.
The employee that spoke on the phone just never put the call on hold it was not on speaker, we don’t use speaker phones. The volume on our phones is set high because there is often back round noise, and hearing clearly is an issue.
The remark about times are tough was meant to be tongue in cheek! However times are tough for many people currently. One of the voices overheard was a customer standing a few feet away and making wisecracks…Friday PM after work, relaxed and maybe a little libation on the way home.
I was asked “the guy wants to know if you can do any better?” my reply,”it’s a good coin, no…..ah, if he doesn’t pay by credit card give he $20 off as a courtesy”. The employee obviously bungled this and the store customer somewhat contributed to the issue.
The coin, nice AU detail small rim bump priced at $495, GreySheet bid is $600 (my bid, I like these coins), that is an EF price at $495. We offered free shipping (actual cost $10-15), and our normal 30 day return privilege.
Regarding poor photo’s, we used to get compliments but several months ago our Web host changed servers and for some reason the photo’s don’t come out well. We are trying to find a solution.
We primarily deal in raw coins and do our best to describe any issues they may have due to handling, circulation and mishandling. There are many (millions) very nice and rare coins that are unslabable and there are many people who would like to own them and touch them. Would those of you who only accept slabbed coins like us to throw all others away or melt them for scrap?
Regarding the worst dealer tag, wow! You work hard for 41 years trying to do the right thing for your customers and balance that with personal and family needs and you get this, because two people hit it off wrong on the phone over a few $.
What do you call the dealers who sell whizzed coins and fake trade dollars or repaired coins as originals, Reputable?

IMHO, I think unless there is some blatantly flagrant occurence between buyer and seller, that this sort of situation would be better handled between the two parties.

I agree. But when one person goes off trying to "convict" someone on these boards when the other side isn't even around to defend themselves or tell their side, this is what happens.

Thank you Scarsdale,
For taking some of your time to Mediate. I too was wondering what would make a long established shop do something like this.(I did considered the Friday angle) As the owner I give him credit as I had villified him maybe a little too much in my head for the actions of another and was sure he would say I made the whole thing up. The event happened just as I stated but as always their is two ways to look at it. I am sorry for letting some of the rabel rousers of the forum keep my anger level up instead of keeping the onus on the coin shop> I lost focus a little. I also might have faired better telling the employee to put the owner on the phone that instant and settling this on the spot but at the time I was upset and didn't know how long I could keep my cool and I kind of thought the owner was in on it. Yes after typing that I pretty sure thats where I went wrong. Might Have still got the coin and not been pissy and off topic all weekend.
It might be good for business. I doubt it would hurt. Those that have been customers before - no difference. However, it seems a number of people never heard of Miller's Mint. I'm sure a bunch of them went to the web site to see what MM is all about and may have found a coin or two of interest. I doubt one crackpot's hyperbole would dissuade them from buying.
<< <i>IMHO, I think unless there is some blatantly flagrant occurence between buyer and seller, that this sort of situation would be better handled between the two parties. >>
I see that now, and your right, but when this happened I had no desire to to work out any sort of deal with with a shop like that and even though it was a couple of employees they must remember they are speaking for the shop and the owner.

I am surprised they allow that employee to talk to customers knowing his issues. THERE is plenty of other work he can do for the company.
About what i figured MM's response would be.
Does this hurt this business? I doubt it one bit, probably helped them out. 100 more people now know they exist. A coin at the right price can can overcome many problems.

This seems to be quite common, as just in the last few days I was transfered by a dealers receptionist to a bumbling idiot when I had an inqury about a coin listed on their website.

We have an employee like this. We don't let him talk to customers. He primarily stays hidden in the garage area. Way fun to work with though----------------BigE
I meant to add, the employee should not be fired. I would not like anyone to lose THERE job now. That was kind of lame on MM's part to even suggest that.
Millers mint could have picked up the phone a day ago and called Crypto79 and fixed the mess once this was brought to the attention of the owner.

I'm not a novice, and I wasn't being difficult either, Did you read Miller's response. Although it's a little best case scenario on his side (not that mine wasn't worst case) It was verbatim what I said happened. He let a loud mouth employee get ahead of him self< I did nothing wrong although I could have handeled it better by going to the owner instead of some of you. And I will still never buy anything from them. Do some of you read whats going on or just take a guess and decide to take a stand one way or the other.
I haven't bought anything from Harry Miller for some years now. Once he had a Seated Quarter in a variety I had never seen before. I didn't have any idea of how rare it might be, and he had it priced quite a bit higher than I felt it was worth. Of course he didn't have a clue that it might be anything other than a common coin. I asked him for his best price, and he came down about 10%. He still wanted too much in my opinion. I figured I'd start looking for one now that I knew it existed. This was around 1994. I should have bit the bullet and bought it. In all these years, I've never seen another. Harry used to have a fair inventory of Seated coins. I don't know what he sells now.

I guess the folks at MM were as heartbroke over a lousy 10 bucks as well.
<< <i>"1.5%back+points"

1- 1.5% back off the bill every month(+5% on gas and 2% at the supermarket)=$7.28 back free money(around 50-60 a month) plus save postage for the check
2- get the coin quicker, 2-3 days to get up there,7days to clear,2-5day for them to send the coin. 2 extra weeks
3- the same reason dealers don't like checks from unknown people, I don't like sending my bank account info to people I haven't worked with before
4- If something went wrong, It's nice to be able to refuse a charge instead of hoping you get your money back into your account, I don't use a debit card

The other side of the story:
Thank you to those who supported us in this and to you others, think about the biblical quote “let him who is without sin cast the first stone”

I am sorry for letting some of the rabel rousers of the forum
keep my anger level up instead of keeping the onus on the coin shop> I lost focus a little. I also might have faired better telling the employee to put the owner on the phone that instant and settling this on the spot but at the time I was upset and didn't know how long I could keep my cool and I kind of thought the owner was in on it. Yes after typing that I pretty sure thats where I went wrong. Might Have still got the coin and not been pissy and off topic all weekend.
but want dont you give Harry a buzz....
make the deal by check for the coin that you wanted...
and then change the title to "Happy Ending (millersmint) NY"

I see that now, and your right, but when this happened I had no desire to to work out any sort of deal with with a shop like that and even though it was a couple of employees they must remember they are speaking for the shop and the owner.
<< <i>It might be good for business. I doubt it would hurt. Those that have been customers before - no difference. However, it seems a number of people never heard of Miller's Mint. THERE is no Indication THEY"RE overpricing THEIR coin.

Once your exposed to this level of professionalism... best to just wait for the next coin to surface!
We have an employee like this. We don't let him talk to customers. He primarily stays hidden in the garage area. Way fun to work with though----------------BigE
Millers mint could have picked up the phone a day ago and called Crypto79 and fixed the mess once this was brought to the attention of the owner.

If this is true, Barry, then why do you defend MM so vehemently?
