Great looking 71's !! Question for you guys... I am sure you guys go to a lot of shows, the National and such and I was curious as to what the selection is on 71's at these shows. Do dealers have boxes of these around to search through and try to find nm+ commons? When you do find a really nice 71 out of one of these boxes, do the dealers price gouge? Also, what would you guys guess in regards to how much unopened 71 Topps Baseball is still out there? (vending, wax, cello, cases)
Another weird question (sorry)
When the 71's were printed, did Topps print the cards on green card stock, which is seen on the back of the card? I am pretty sure the green is not ink? correct? So, if it is not ink would the photo on the front of the cards with black border be printed over a green card stock or was the stock on the front a different color altogether? I'm curious and was hoping some experts could fill me in. Thanks
I'm afraid I'm not much of an historian. I know nothing about the card stock or Topps' printing methods.
Funny thing, I've been to only one card show in my entire life. That was back in 1991 or 1992 when I was looking for one particular card to complete a 1970 set. I found it right away and left. Never even bothered to look around, though I now wish I had.
If I want to go to a show, I have to travel 100 - 200 miles to find one, so I haven't been to one in a couple of years. I have found 71's in shops and usually the shop owners are fair on price. Otherwise I try to find them here and there and occasionally on the B/S/T. I will occasionally buy nicely centered common PSA 7's for $2-$3 when I find them. If you want nice 71's, you won't get them cheap, but you can find them for fair prices.
If you are working on a raw set, I would also suggest purchasing a black light as recoloring is a big problem with this issue.
Trust me, I have the blacklight covered. I do not want to do a raw set, but I do want to put a set together of all of the participients of the 71 all star game. I only have one 71, a SGC 88 Pete Rose which I am very happy with. I am very OCD when it comes to 71's. Back in 2003 I had a PSA 8 Rose, R Jackson, Munson, Palmer, Clemente, and Aaron, but I had to sell them. I bought the Rose and Munson from someone on these boards (can't remember who) back in 02 for $600 I was a member of these boards back in 02, but I can't remember my user name..lol
Wow Brett, those 71's look great. The centering is consistently great across the board. Are any of these crack outs? How do the key cards of your 71 set look? How long have you been working on the set and what are your sources? Questions, questions, questions...
Hendricks (8), Matias (8), Barton (7.5), and Snyder (7) were PSA crackouts. The key cards look pretty much like the ones you see above, although some are centered better than others. The quality of my set is very consistent.
I've been working on that set since 1971...mostly. As a 7 year old in '71 I acquired most of the cards from $0.05 packs at the local liquor/grocery stores. I did some periodic upgrading in my late teens and completed the set sometime in the mid 1980's. Back then, I bought all my cards at card stores, of which there were many in southern California.
Once I discovered eBay (about 3 or 4 years ago), I began upgrading in earnest. My main sources for '71's were eBay, other web-based stores (mainly Mickey's Sportscards), and the BST Forum right here. When buying raw '71's on eBay I limited my purchases to a handful of sellers whom I trust, since there seems to be a lot of tampering with ''71's (mainly recoloring and trimming).
I'm essentially done with the set, but every time I look at it I see another card or 2 that doesn't satisfy me. It seems like the quest never ends, but, for me, the quest is the most fun.
Hey Brett! I love the idea that you have been working on your original set since you were 7! I think that is so neat! I wish I could say the same about the 72 set I collected from scratch...but unfortunately it is long gone, along with most everything else I collected as a kid! You are a TRUE collector and I like the fun you have in collecting!
This set was put together back in the late 80's. Living on the West Coast, it was rather difficult finding these in any condition, so I had to rely mostly on the big shows that were held in San Francisco. I wish ebay was around back then because seeing what high grade examples are going for at auction makes me realize I paid way too much for these. Great memories regardless.
I thought I'd post some football since I just finished up watching my Iowa State Cyclones defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln for the first time in 32 years! Here's some '73T from a really sharp lot I bought a while ago. Most of these are likely destined for a slab some day:
Thanks to some members (honerable mention to itzagoner) here and ebay I am 184/232 for finishing a pretty nice set of 1971-72 Basketball. These are just a few I picked up this week.
I also picked up some really nice cards for my 1960 Topps BB set, however I have not had a chance to scan most of them yet:
My scanner does not do well with SGC slabs
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)
Don, thanks for showing some '73 football. I had a very nice complete set that I sold a while back (along with about 20 other complete Topps FB sets, '72-'94) to finance my baseball upgrading. I miss all those cards.
Doug, welcome back. Viewing snipets of your great collection is one of the highlights of my weekend.
Very nice looking '57s there Brett. Like I said last week, that set is definitely growing on me. Let's reverse the numbers and give some love to the '75 set. I found myself going through my set last night and need to take the time to upgrade another couple dozen as I do ever so often. Here's a couple scans:
Pick these babies up at an estate auction. 50 nrmtish 56 topps commons, complete run of 1961 topps high numbers (many going on ebay tonight. Much more stuff too! best estate auction I've been in in 10 years!

A couple additions this last week to the Tony Gonzalez collection I started this year.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
I am new to this thread and I ususally reserve my finer cards for the REGISTRY FORUM, however, I will share these beauties with y'all. Do you think Topps had great a QC mgr. in the cutting dept. in 1955? fyi - These are fresh from cellos and you can read about it in mext mo.'s SMR Mag.
I've been making some good progress on my '71 set this week. Here are some of the nicer arrivals this week:
Also picked up this Blyleven RC. It was really cheap on eBay and even though it is OC L/R, I was surprised at how sharp it was when I got it. It measures up fine too. Will make a nice filler until I can find a nicely centered PSA 7 graded copy.
Thanks Greg. I would love a graded 71 set, but too big an undertaking for me...and too pricey. It's a fun challenge finding clean, centered, unaltered cards and the set is huge. I'm working on a raw set with the exception of the key cards which I'm getting in PSA 7. I should have a few hundred more to comb through this week and will hopefully have several worth showing next week.

Thanks. I think he has some more too. I bought these as a test to see how they looked in hand and will likely grab some more this week.
