Doug and Fred, good morning to you both. Neither of you are correct, although Doug is on the right track.

They all went to college in the PAC 10 conference.

<< <i>They all went to college in the PAC 10 conference. >>

Nick is correct! At least they all went to universities that are now in the Pac 10. Back then, it may have still been the Pac 8.

  • << <i>They all went to college in the PAC 10 conference. >>

I was going to say PAC 10 too, but in those days it was the PAC 8 wasn't it? Which excluded the Arizona schools until '78. I'm going to guess the all won a national championship while playing in college?

    Never mind- I just read Brett's response--sorry

  • Nice cards picked up at a garage sale. Always a dream to get the older cards at a low price out and about visiting all the sales. Good work.
  • A friend at work who knew I collected cards brought these in for me. He didn't want money but I did buy lunch for him a few times for them.

your lucky he didn't want anything. I had a friend from work who had some late 70's cards in great shape, all he wanted was high beckett for each card....I told him to keep the cards

  • Brett- you've got me stumped on your cards today, but I'm working on it. The only thing I can think of is they were coaches after playing but that's lame. Meanwhile, here's some cards from the '60 set. Take care. Doug

    Doug,

Your gorgeous cards have me green with envy, as usual.

If you think your answer to my 1970 question is lame, wait 'til you hear the correct one. Talk about lame!

  • Brett--any hint on the cards? I like this thread because I can go through some cards today to show that I haven't looked at in awhile. I happened to look through some '64 Giants cards and saw the one Mantle and forgot that I had it autographed back in the 70's. I never liked it much because the pen skipped. I also had him sign four baseballs and the ink since has faded completely away. The baseballs were junk. Mickey sat on a chair at the opening of an appliance store and just signed everything for free back then. As you can see, I got one 3x5 signature that was great. The other Mantle by the way has four amazing sharp corners. Just brag'in, sorry. Doug

    Doug,

Here's a hint: The answer relates to the players' other appearances on 1970's baseball cards.

Great '64 Giants. When I was a wee lad I had quite a few of those, including the Mantle. I no longer have them and have no idea what I did with 'em. They most likely got lost or left behind when my family moved when I was 10 yrs old.

    Nope, that is not correct.

    Edited for clarification.

    Hey Brett:

As to the '70 cards, all of those players appeared on the following year's issue in the hatless mugshot pose.

    Simply outstanding J!!! Beauties.
  • I love the mini's. Collected them way back when. The packs went up to 15 cents that year but there was one circle K clerk that didn't realize it and sold them to me for the old 10 cent price from the year before. That's when I'd buy two hands full of packs. Great to see your cards to bring back the memories. Good stuff today guys, I especially like the Indian Chief cards, filled with interesting info. Take care. Doug

Darn, J, that was way too easy for you. Yes indeed, they are all wearing "Wilson" gloves.

  • Hi Brett- Beautiful cards once again. I slept in today because I was out late after going to an amazing Mariners game last night. I know amazing and Mariners don't always go together but Griffey Jr. hit a memorable PH HR to tie in the 8th, just classic. Anyway, a guess on your cards this morning. All these players would yell, "WILSON!" if they lost their gloves at sea. Sorry for the movie reference, I'm still a little out of it today. Take care. Doug
  • ymareaymarea Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭
    Doug,
There's nothing wrong with that movie reference. I was gonna use that as a hint in case one was needed. J, however, got the answer practically before I clicked on the "Reply to Thread" button.

  • Here's some cards from the very difficult 1961 final series. Of course all my superstar cards, Mantle,Aaron,Maris,Mays and Banks are OC. What can you do? At least there are no creases.

WOW Doug, those are some mighty nice 61 high numbers! Do you have a complete set that is in the same general condition?

Brett; very nice cards again this week!

Julen, I forgot to say that those 75 minis that you showed off from your box bust last week were SHARP! Are you going to sub them all, or do you have any plans on selling any of them raw bad boys after you upgrade your own set? image

Thanks Tom- I would say the set I have is about this condition. Some of the BIG cards-Mantle, Aaron I would like to upgrade but overall it's like the high's. I have two graded common cards in the whole set, a "8" and a "9". Like many other raw card collectors I'd rather spend what little money I have toward cards and not getting cards graded.

    Thanks, Tom.

Doug, your '61's are fantastic. I could live with the centering, it's not that bad. I absolutely love the look and "feel" of those cards. They scream real baseball, not like the slow-paced, over commercialized, drug-infested game we have today.

You have such wonderful 50's and 60's cards, I have to ask, how old are you? I started collecting in 1970 when I was 6, so 1970 is as far back as my collection goes.

  • Thanks for the nice comments Brett. I get to be 47 this November, as far as the collection goes I started in '74. Along with buying packs during that year I just loved the older cards from the beginning. Since it's Father's day tomorrow my Dad really helped me go after the older sets. Although he never collected, we collected together from then on. I bought cards with whatever money I could get with summer jobs but he really helped buy many of them. I could never repay him for what he's done for "our" collection. Even today I thank him every time I see him. All the cards I've posted since joining were probably bought before 1990. So they were pretty affordable back then. With a family now I can only afford to upgrade about $500 a year now,(I hope my wife doesn't read this), which aren't many cards in high grade. I don't know about you but I got cards for Birthday and Christmas presents while growing up and they were the best gifts of all for me. Thanks again.

    Doug,
Great story. Now I'm officially envious of your cards and your relationship with your dad. I think about starting some pre-1970 sets, but I know that ultimately I would be dissatisfied with anything less than NM or Nm-mt, which would cost too much money. Heck, Mickey Mantle alone is enough to keep me on the outside lookin' in.
