I just received these two complete sets in the mail.

    1. 1957 Western Stars (C.W.S. Tobbaco / Jaycee Tipped Cigarettes)

I have multiple purchases of this wonderfully colored 24-card set over the past few years! This series features many of the greatest western film stars of the past, such as Roy Rogers, Dale Robertson, Ray Milland, Andy Devine, Ernest Borgnine, Ward Bond, ...just to name a few! One just has to admire the artwork, combined with all those rich colors of this set, as it is with so many of the 1950's "trade cards". My goal is eventually build a set worthy of high end mint PSA grading. I'm getting closer! (Do you recognize any of these film stars?) image

    2. 1966 Aircraft of World War II (Hitchman's Dairies, Ltd.)

Here's another European 25-card set from the mid sixties. This set has it all! Beautiful artwork, expert printing with clean surfaces, great color, excellent centering, and for the "history buff", one of the better historical pictorials of World War II propeller-ed airplanes, such as the B-17 (aka: "The Flying Fortress), long range 4-prop bomber, air-fighters such as the Mustang, the Zero, The Messerschmitt, Spitfire, and much more, ...brings this set to life for me! (What a beautiful minty set!)

Hope you all enjoy these cards too!

  • rd-- you're right about the color, especially the westerns. Just beautiful. They look like they should be framed and put on a wall. Thanks for sharing. Doug

Those red/yellow 75's (and minis) are very nice. That Gibson is sneaky tough. Nice Tanana too.

I posted this earlier on the "non-sports" threads. I thought it merits a "raw card Saturday" look see!

Just picked-up this wonderful 25-card set, circa 1936 called, "The Game of Poker", issued by Cope Bros.

I should have them "in-hand" before next Saturday. I hope to post the entire set @ next week's "raw card saturday"!

I was told by this very reliable seller, that the condition of this set is superb, with well-centered, minty fresh, clean looking cards.

    I can't wait! image

    rd,

Great non-sport cards that you picked up! I'm especially fond of the aircraft cards, since I work in the aviation field.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Pete,
Nice Giant and Game cards. VERY SHARP. I have a few of each if you are looking to complete a set. I think I have a few Kelloggs from that year too.

    Bosox,
That's a really sharp looking Mays. What a grin on his face.

    Tom, Mike,

Great cards, I love 'em! That Mays is worth getting excited about.

I'd be excited too if I was able to pick up a 62 Mays like that!

    Very nice card Mike!

  • Brett, since you mentioned glue and it's Derby day. I'm going to say they own horses or have a horse named after them. I may be way off on this one.

Their hats are shiny or they have helmets on the 72 cards.
  • MphilkingMphilking Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭
By the way that's as nice an Alan Gallagher as I've seen.
  • ymareaymarea Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭

<< <i>Their hats are shiny or they have helmets on the 72 cards. >>

Yes, Michael, you got it. They are all wearing helmets. (Even pitcher Tom Murphy.)

Now take a stab at the 1970 theme. If I don't get some responses soon I will begin to sulk.

  • Here's some '53s. Always love the artwork on these cards. Doug

Doug, those cards are really cool.
    Brett
  • Thanks Brett. More importantly, did you get my lame guess on the '70 Topps theme? I posted right before your '72s came up. Or am I off track on that guess ?

    Doug,

Sorry about that. I didn't see your post. Thanks for taking a stab at it, but your answer is incorrect. The answer has entirely to do with baseball.

Edited to say: My reference to "glue" in the '70 post was not meant as a hint. I was merely trying to be poetic.

I'm stumped with the 70's theme and I have no more time to think about it. Today is the first day of pitching in our Teeball league. Isn't that a contradiction?

<< <i>From the 1977 set: All of these former pitchers accomplished something that binds them together in baseball history. What is the secret?
    >>

They all had at least one awesome year in MLB??? None of them pitched a no hitter while on LSD except for Doc image

    Seriously, love those raw cards!!!!!!!!!
  • ymareaymarea Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭
    Michael,
    Have fun at t-ball.

    Brian,
It's true that they all had at least one great year, but that's really a matter of opinion. The correct answer is far more objective.

77s - They all led their league in ERA? Love those cards, especially the Bird.
  • ymareaymarea Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭
Thanks, Bobby. I think of you every time I post '77's...you are the '77 KING!

Nice guess, but incorrect. A little hint: The answer does involve a pitching statistical category.

On the '70s...did they all go hitless in the '69 post season?

That's possible, but as far as I can tell only Gaspar, Perry, and Didier were in the '69 postseason. That answer just wouldn't be fair. The correct answer is something that they all share in common, has something to do with their on-field play, but has nothing to do with statistics (ie hits, no-hitters, errors, etc.).

They all appeared in just one All-Star game? image (I am still guessing...)
  • Brett-- On the 1970's question. They were all switch hitters (if you know what I mean) even the pitchers. I had to go through all of those cards in my set until I finally noticed it. Great question. Doug

DISCO!!! Good work, Doug, you got it. I applaud your effort. image

Now on to the '77 theme....

  • OK Brett, onto the '77s. They all topped out at 19 wins as the most they ever won in a season. I'm worn out now trying to get these this week. You are the best.

Doug, by gosh you've done it again! Nice work.

All were fine pitchers who never won 20, but they did win as many as 19 in a season. Billingham did it in consecutive seasons, while Bibby reached the mark with teams in either league.

That needs to be slabbed for protection. WOW
  • Have you ever noticed how many innings he threw that first year? 250 innings! No wonder he had arm problems. I think the manager got caught up in all of his rookie year success and burned him out.

#235 is supposed to be Frank Thomas...I'm thinking it must mean of the Priates/Mets/Reds...but Beckett lists the card in the Big Hurt checklist...have you ever seen it because I can't find the card?
