<< <i>y, how do you keep those gorgeous cards so mint when you're handling and scanning them without sleeves?????? >>
That's a good question. The simple answer is that I don't always succeed. I've had a couple of mishaps where I've dropped a card smack on one of it's corners. I can't tell you how much I hate it when that happens. Just the other day I replaced a mint '72 Steve Barber with a nm-mt because of my butter fingers.
Indy, I didn't know that Oates was deceased. He is not the one that doesn't belong, though. Remember, Bobby has already identified the common thread (names ending in "s") so you'll have to work off of that.
<< <i>Oh, I see. Lee Richards is the odd card out, because his team name doesn't end in "S" also (White SoX)? Am I on the right track? >>
Indy, for the 2nd week in a row you are exactly right. Lee Richard does not belong because his name doesn't end in "s." His name is mispelled on the front of the card. The back (I wish I had scanned it for display here, but didn't.) shows the correct spelling. Good Job!
Any guess about the 1971 pitchers? C'mon, that's an easy one.
Well, I sort of got it right. I thought the reason was because the team name didn't end in S also. Funny thing is, my wife (who was looking over my shoulder at the time) is actually the one who got it completely right. She guessed that Lee Richards should be Lee Richard, but I dismissed it. Go figure.
I'll let someone else handle the answer this time.
Y, I don't know how you do it with finding such nicely centered 70's cards. That Murcer card is expecially nice! I've been so frustrated lately with trying to find centered cards from the 70's that I've been thinking about starting a collection of more modern cards, like maybe the Topps Hertiage stuff. My boys are getting old enough where they are starting to get interested in "what Dad is doing," so this may be a good time for a transition.
Thanks, Indy. At least when it came to cards, my sons never gave a hoot about what dad was doing. Their loss, ha ha. Thanks for the compliment about the Murcer. It took me a good long time to find one that satisfied me. That speck you see on the card's upper right corner is on the scanner, not the card. It can also be seen on the same corner of the Norm Cash card. I better dust that thing.
These 92 & 93 Donruss inserts were "rare" and highly desirable when I was a kid. Numbered #/10,000 and #/5,000. With the internet, "rare" isn't so rare anymore.
I love picking up cards I drooled over as a kid. The cards are usally a lot cheaper, but the excitement of adding them to my collection is still there.
I believe this is The Thrills FIRST pack inserted autographed card.
<< <i>I think they all battled cancer - is that correct ? >>
I don't know about all the others, but I'm pretty sure that Norm Cash and Jim Hunter did not.
Bobby,
Thanks about the '75's. Try as I might, I just can't seem to like that set. This will sound odd coming from a fan of the 1972 set, but those '75's are just too funky looking for my taste. I'm probably partial to the 72's because of the memories they hold.
<< <i>They all died from cancer, including Jim Hunter. >>
Close enough. They are all deceased. Not necessarily from cancer, though. Hunter succumbed to ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease.) Aurelio Rodriguez was killed when a car hit him.
Not to be overly morbid, but I just read this on Wikipedia...very spooky:
There have been three players in major league history named Aurelio, and all three were killed in car accidents between the ages of 44 and 53. See also Aurelio Lopez and Aurelio Monteagudo.
Very nice cards digicat! I remember Will "The Thrill" Clark putting the hurt on my beloved Chicago Cubs in Games 1 and 5 of the '89 NLCS. Clark was quite the player!
<< <i>Very nice cards digicat! I remember Will "The Thrill" Clark putting the hurt on my beloved Chicago Cubs in Games 1 and 5 of the '89 NLCS. Clark was quite the player! >>
Heh, yeah, I remember that fondly. I remember in particular the recap they did on the local nightly news after game 1. They played an audio clip of Harry Caray being silent as Clarks' 4th inning grand slam off Maddux sailed off, and then the silence being broken by Caray's incomprehensible angry muttering.
<< <i> Any guess about the 1971 pitchers? C'mon, that's an easy one. >>
If I'm not mistaken, all of the gentlemen pictured on the 71s hurled no-hitters.

For all of the '75 mini fans here, I'll start off this weeks' round by making a few posts of some nice cards that I scooped up 2 weekends ago at the Sharonville (OH) show...
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

You got it, Brian. He's the only one whom we can definitively say is holding a baseball. Most you can't tell, but judging by the likes of Linzy, Fuentes, and Robertson, I doubt that any have a ball. But hey, here on Raw Card Saturday we all have a ball. Oooo, that was corny!
that was my 2nd guess he's the only one who has a ball in his glove

<< <i>y, do you buy them graded and crack them out? They're too nice to find raw these days! >>
I do both raw and graded. I crack out all the graded cards I buy (except for 1972 OPC CFL). Of the 30 1971's shown above, 13 were raw and 17 were cracked out of PSA holders.
<< <i>Nice 71's! Can you easily tell if the borders/corners have been colored? >>
Thanks, Michael. I can't say that it's easy, and I certainly hope that none of the cards I've bought have been recolored. I examine each card very closely, paying close attention to the outer edges to see if any black ink has bled through from the surface. Also, I limit my purchases of '71's to only a select few reputable sellers to lessen the chance of unwelcome surprises.
Take a look at the 1972's and try your luck at solving the mystery.

Good idea, I'll start doing that. I just have to be sure to hold on to the card once I get it off the scanner!

Nice guess, sidepocket, but Indy got it right. I guess there can always be more than 1 possibility, but to answer correctly you must think like me.
